What are some of the things you guys do to earn a crust. Any really interesting jobs out there in KB land. With some of you it is fairly obvious what you do(or dont do) to earn your crust. Maybe a pic or 2 of you at work would be cool too. Im a nosey fucker. Me, I drive machinery most days when I can be bothered, mostly spend my time on a D6H or a digger, but love driving the transporter around, cos it gets me out being nosey.

I have been in the flooring trade for 30 years.
Carpet Layer by trade but now only do vinyl and my own floor prep.
Which includes concrete grinding/sanding/Hardboard overlay etc.
I used to do alot of vinyl woodlook planks but opted out of those some years ago due to the instabillity of the product in certain situations.

When we bought this place 7 yrs ago it had those woodlook planks in our kitchen/dining area, they were newly laid and looked kinda cool, but now I have to rip them out because they are lifting and cracking and look absolutely shitty.Nice red pine underneath,so may just sand and varnish.

I'm an ex chippie who moved up through site/project & construction manager roles into my current roles of Building Surveyor/consultant, WHRS Weathertightness assessor, Professional expert witness in disputes, Engineer/Architect to construction contracts (not an actual engineer or architect, more like a clerk of works), Building consent processor, Building inspector, Project manager, Development manager. I do any and all of the above roles plus a few more but am very picky about who I work for and generally only in situations when there is a serious problem that needs to be sorted out (i.e litigation, seriously stalled projects etc). I have taken control of and completed seriously distressed projects up to $35 million in value, but mostly nowadays act as an expert on behalf on Insurance companies in professional negligence claims. I'm a minor shareholder in the consultancy which I contract to.
Anyone who has a serious construction related problem (including respondents to leaky building claims) are welcome to contact me for a little bit of free advice.

I understand your reluctance but the actual level of knowledge and experience required to qualify as a LBP is very low. The application process/forms however, requires a ridiculous amount of paper hoop jumping and puts people off. :brick:
However you don't have to be a LBP to work as a carpenter. You can work with or under someone who has an license. A lot of chippies are opting to go that way.

Fuel tanker driver for the NZ owned outfit. Mind you, after 12 yrs of this, due for a change in the next year or so. Tried the indoor thing, done logistics for a multinational, but a couple of years of that was long enough.
The shiftwork is both good and bad, if it's fine when my days off are during the week it's cool to head out on the bike when few riders are out and about.
On days like today, truckin' back over the Rimutaka Hill towards Welly, dozens of bikers heading north don't even understand the concept of staying on their own side of the flippin' road. Must be weekend warriors? Hey, if I can keep 20 metres of bigrig between the lines....rant over.

Each time you go to MacDonalds or subway, you get the bread from the ovens I assemble
Most Takeaway shops use the deep fryers I assemble
The Bay Marie's you get the hot food out of at dairy's, bakeries and pubs, those too have had my hands assemble them.
SO although it is a lowly underpaid factory assembly tech, it my job
Them pies are kept warm all over the country are because of my efforts
And we just sold 3000 ovens to Russia, where Macdonalds and Subway are establishing new franchise shops
1500 units to China for Subway
Even exporting to Japan to fit their Subways outlets.......

Still a good days ride for me on the west coast (Otaki), to do a loop from here over the Paekokariki hill, Rimataka hill, ride some great country roads around the lake and parts further east, then back through Masterton, on to Pahiatua, if ya scroll north through Masterton and follow SH2 to Ekatahuna, or look for alfredton to the east of Ekatahuna, which is fantastic riding, (apart from the odd sheep) then out at pahiatua and west through the pahiatua track to Palmerston North 6-8 hours of heaven ! After working as a machine technician for Burroughs in NZ and Fiji, started a Geology degree at Auckland, got bored and broke after a year or so and became a carpenter. (Seems to be a family trait, chippying.). Spent 30 yrs as a chippie, picking up Advanced Trade Cert along the way, ending up specialising in Heritage type houses and anything with unusual construction techniques, with a spell as a trenching contractor in a family business, laying underground telephone cable for the Post Office, for a couple of years, as well. Did my NZ Cert/Diploma in Quantity Surveying and the last 15 yrs have mainly been Q.S'ing, with a spell as a Building Inspector thrown in. Thought about finishing the Advanced Diploma of Building Surveying, but, really, I can't be bothered, even though it's a doddle. Now spend my time involved mainly with Catholic schools in W.A. and berating Architects who change all the drawings between tender and half way through construction, don't bother telling anyone, then act all indignant when you don't know what they're talking about and why didn't you allow for this and that. Because it WASN'T IN THE FUCKING DRAWINGS YOU PILLOCK! WE AREN'T MINDREADERS WITH PRESCIENCE BEYOND MERE MORTALS!!
Oh well, back to work......

Started off at Waikato Stadium cooking chips for all the rugby fans. Terrible job. All night eating fatty/greasy/salty chips and you come home smelling like the fat you cook them in.
Then got a job working in a supermarket and have done ever since  6+ years mixture of fulltime and parttime.
Almost finished my IT degree (progammer/developer) and am currently doing part time IT work for a local business (getting paid the same as my supermarket job ).
Hopefully i can sort a job at the snow next year and head off to Canada at the end of the year :Punk:
