Hey Guys,
I'm moving to Auckland from wellington next year and am thinking about getting into some off road competition. I've been road racing for the past 3 years and because auckland doesn't have a winter series for road racing and i dont want to drive a 12hr round trip just for manfield i'm thinking about taking up MX to stay fit on the bike during winter.
So my question is - is there a learner friendly MX club in auckland that runs once a month or something, i'm after a race class where i wont get run over by the next josh coppins/darryl/shane king etc, and i'll probably get a 125 2 stroke to begin with.
Cheers,
Josh

Get hold of Scott Wilkins (Scott411), he's a GC and will steer you in the right direction.

there is a number of clubs around auckland that run MX,
there is no real VMX club that i know of,
the stuff at Pukekohe Club runs and Ardmore is not really what you are looking for,
Ken Fells run a more natural terrain track (although with a couple of jumps), they are not far off the northern motorway at Kaukapakapa, www.fellsfarmmx.co.nz
also Mr Motorcycles run a couple of maize paddock races at the end of march though to april, www.mrmotorcycles.co.nz these are popular and just what you are looking for,
Power Adventures did some summer scrambles last year, but heard differing reports, try www.poweradventures.co.nz
Tony at the Sandpit did run some Good Times Scrambles last year, not to sure if these are on again or not, try www.thesandpit.co.nz
also teh Rodney Motorcycles Club run some natural terrain stuff as well, not sure of there website but i am sure google will find it,

If you just want to keep fit through the winter there is heaps of cross country/enduro racing round the area.
You could just jump in the rookie class, they're heaps of fun and great for fitness.

That could be a good plan - the MotoX stuff is a bit scary, i'm allergic to big jumps. Are the smaller bikes still alright in an enduro series or would a be better off with a 250 2 stroke instead of a 125. Or something like a KDX200 (i had one as my last dirt bike)

Nah 125cc are a great bike for cross country racing, if you look at results you'll notice that bikes all different sizes do well, its the rider really.
There is some good racing to be had at woodhill through the winter, no jumps, and as competative as you want it to be, some of us have to get up and work monday!!

+1 on what Rupe said, stick with the 125 plan. With your level of experience you'll be faster on it and you will be able to ride faster for longer than some angry 250 2 smoke that keeps trying to kill you (have personal experience of being inexperienced/very rusty and buying a 250 2T to get back into dirt biking).
