Ninja 250R 2009 query

Hi

I recently bought a 2009 Ninja 250 off a private seller. It had only 2500K on odometer and had a two borther exhaust fitted. Few queries I have if someone can help..
1. Does a two brother exhaust decrease fuel efficiency? My fuel meter empties pretty quickly.
2. It has a light on the fuel gauge, which I assume is a reserve indicator? Does anyone know how much fuel is left once and if it lights up? I haven't let the tank go empty yet.
3. Because it has a light, does it mean it is fuel injected? I couldn't find anything on the net.
4. I never could full the tank so much so that the fuel meter indicates full. Is this because I fill the bike while on a side stand? we are not allowed to fill while riding or are we?

I used to have one of them Ninjas so maybe I can help.

1. The two bother exhaust has not been fitted to save fuel. It's purpose is to make more noise and to bother people. That's why it's called "two bother exhaust".

2. I think the fuel tank takes about 17 liters in total. Fill the bike up immediately after the light comes on. The amount in you put in is then X. The amount left when the light comes on is Y. To find Y solve the equation Y = 17 - X.

3. No, the light means it has a flux capacitor.

4. I don't see how anyone can stop you from fulling your bike while riding.

Ok I agree I don't have much knowledge about newer bikes.. The last one I rode was a 2 stroke engine more than 10 years ago.. What's the shame in accepting this..

Don't think the side stand filling will make much difference, mind you I still fill while straddling (perhaps a better word than 'riding') mine so it is vertical and filled to the top.

Exhaust could be affecting the fuel efficiency, due to improper jetting/mapping. Record fuel in and kms obtained, then compare with what others are getting to find out how your's stack up.

1/. It will more than likely cause a little difference, unless it hasnt been rejetted properly
2/. that light will be an indicator for you to switch to the reserve, if you dont have a fuel tap like my bike hasnt.. :facepalm: then its probably an indicator to tell you that you are on the reserve, typically its about 2L on my bikes.
3/. No, It just means it has a modern dash
4/. If you mean fill the bike while sitting on it at the pump, then no your not meant to, but you do get a little more gas in it if you do,

It could be your fuel sensor pick up is a bit fucked which is showing that its not full when it is.

1. It'll probably affect your fuel efficiency a bit but I wouldn't expect it to make much difference.
2. It will be a low fuel light, you'll probably have about 50km until empty.
3. No, it only means that there's a low fuel light. I think the NZ 2009 models were still carbureted.
4. It makes very little difference on most bikes whether they're filled on the stand or upright. One of the many warning signs next to the pump at petrol stations will say/represent something along the lines of "No stradling while filling motorcycles" but I doubt anyone will care.


Record fuel in and kms obtained, then compare with what others are getting to find out how your's stack up.

I have an 09 model. When I fill it up to full the needle on the fuel gauge should go past the full mark... You aren't putting the fuel hose in the tank and letting it automatically stop when the fuel touches the nozzle are you? Fill it to the brim. It's an 18L tank. Even leaned on it's side if you get it up to the brim and stand it up straight the fuel only goes down a cm or so in the tank.

Mine has an aftermarket exhaust whose purpose is probably just to be noisy. I usually go to fill up the tank after 400km, and that never has the low fuel light come on. Fuel Economy wise you should be getting between 20-25km/L.

2009 model is not fuel injected (unless you somehow managed to get a European model here). You'll know if you have a choke or not.

I have a 89 GPX250 with a motor out of an 08 Ninja 250 (they are still carbureted), so same motor as yours.. I get 22km/l at the moment and have a loud gay exaust on my bike also, I have no centre stand, but do find i can fit more gas in if I stand the bike up and lean it against my leg so its upright while filling it.

My wife had one of these and the fuel gauge is a waste of time. Hers typically read empty when it had almost half a tank left. It was replaced by Kawasaki and the new one was exactly the same.
The other thing to note is your speedo will be reading around 16% too high ie when it indicates 100kph your only doing 84.
When I took it in to Kawasaki they did a speedo test with two other new 250 ninjas and said its ok because it read the same as the others :facepalm:.
I eventually convinced the dealer that it was 16% out but Kawasaki NZ couldnt give a shit.
So in summary a 2009 Ninja 250 gauges are utter crap

All the investigations that I made at the time suggested anything was (legally) acceptable as long as it read under and not over.
My main gripe with Kawasaki was that it was being pushed as a learner bike and at an indicated 70kph would only be doing 59kph etc
IMHO it was bloody dangerous for a novice rider.

I had an 09 Ninja. When filling up, I would make sure to fill right up as far as I could without actually overflowing and that brought the needle up to about full. When I stood the bike up the needle would drop slightly below fill, and for the first few ks it would drop like a stone down to about 3/4. After that it would take its time. I don't recall ever paying more than $33 to fill up even when the fuel light had been on for a while, I think I should have had about 3 litres left before filling.

Seems like there is a large variation in these gauges. Oh, and the speedo read really high too. But then so does my GSXR.

Is it the fuel gadge thats crap, or the sensor thingie in the tank? I am not sure how the '09s are set up, but If its a float connected to the sensor, its just a matter of bending the rod (that the float is attached to) in the appropriate dirrection so the float can move freely from full to empty. I had to do this on my little sachs scooter because the gadge would go to E after 40km. And if thats not possible, just fill up before the trip odo reads 400km.

Even on the sidestand you can overfull the tank. No need to straddle it.

I've tested my Honda's speed vs GPS, and it's only 5% out if that, which was pretty surprising, most speedos are out by at least 10%.
Speed is only a guideline anyway though right?
