View Full Version : Anyone else got Run Fatigue?

There have been two runs this weekend, Toy Run and SPCA. For some reason couldn't get the enthusiasm to attend either this time. Yes I know they are for good causes but I support charities as much as one feels able in these money challenged times anyway. The routes don't help, an all too brief ride down a motorway I'm all too familar with. Plus weekends are full of bits and ends to do, all those little chores forever adding up and yet another Xmas on its merry way so a Run means half a day gone and its Monday again. Its also not helping I've done heaps of rides over the years, the one to 1978 24 hr Motorcycle Le Mans of the more interesting, with 25,000 French bikes filtering at 140kph on the autoroute. Must be getting old and grumpy.

As much as I support raising funds for worthwhile causes I can't stomach the large group rides. Frankly it's for all the reasons you've mentioned (except that I haven't done HEAPS of these rides) and the fact that I don't get nearly enough time riding my Rocco so choosing to ride behind and amongst a large group of people I don't know on dull roads is just not that appealing to me. I'd also rather put my money in my tank when I go for a ride and would rather buy a raffle or summat as opposed to paying for the privelage to ride my own bike down the motorway....among mostly strangers...

Anti social much? YUP

I got to admit those charity runs like that scare the living shit out of me. I'm really nervous the whole time and don't find it much fun. People kinda forget that if we are 2 up on a 40+ year old bike we need a little consideration re braking distances and as soon as we leave a space 15 space kadets leap into it. Then theres all the Joseph Lucas Prince of Darkness Jokes and the I used to have one of those but it was an unreliable POS so I got a real bike types - fuck me - It gets a bit tired after the 500th time and I'm sorry you are a ham fisted incompetent arse but why share it with everyone?

I felt a bit guilty not going but this year we were flat out and did the special childrens xmas party the day before - we were a bit pooped....

Gave up on rallies and large Runs years ago!, got sick of the idiot know it all's and crotch rocket sunday riders trying to kill me -funnily enough, the same "riders" who I never see on the road in winter etc.
And like you I tend to like the older classics, I too got sick of hearing the same shit over and over from the mechanically incompetant.

Rode down to the Dunedin toy run in the weekend. I didnt see any silly riding at all!

We were on my old 24HP, 350kg side car, that only has 2 wheel brakes so yea I know what you mean about beaking (and accelerating) distance.

I attended both rides this weekend gone and these are my thoughts:-

Both were well planned and executed.
However,...

Saturday's BRONZ SPCA one got very slow at times and in the hot weather my Guzzi was throwing a hissy fit.
Then the well organised zig zag ride down the motorway was upset by a small bunch of Harley riders (who were part of the ride) deciding to do it their way and got very dangerous !!

Sunday's Toy Run also was well organised. The only issue was riding down the motorway and having to brake heavily (on the wet roads) as the big line sped up and slowed down. Made for some interesting moments.

Also showed me that my bike is less than ideal for these type of rides.

+1.....too slow, bike gets hot and plugs foul, saw heaps of bikes overheat and the in and out with the clutch cant be too good. Nelson needs to do a section on the deviation so it gets some heat out of the bikes.

Think you guys needs to get your bikes serviced. The SPCA run from Pram to Welly was mainly at 95k, only down to 50 where the limit required it. If your bike can't run for 30 minutes at 90-95k I don't think your issues is with the ride. Apart from that, thanks to great police assistance, you didn't have to idle much at traffic lights or round a bouts. I got caught a couple of times by lights along the Wellington Quays with the tail end but most of the ride had a smooth run.

Funny how the complaints are complain about the hoons on group rides AND about having to be disciplined

We got our club poker run on this saturday, (i won't be on it !)

But there aint gonna be any overheating issues, just the usual unknown rider issues with perhaps 50 to 80 riders coming ! Beauty of this one (when i do em) is i'm usually out the front with the guys i ride with every day heading to marshalling points and just watch the issues ride past and catch up at the next stop !
On other rides where i know bugger all about the riders habits i tend to give most ppl a wide berth.

Trouble with summer is everyone seems to go hell for leather to get all their runs organised before xmas ! Been 3 rides in November alone i was suppose to be on plus the two charity rides the weekend just gone (but didn't)

Not the 90-95k but the 40k around Grey's Road. Guzzi's (of my vintage anyway) chuck out a lot of heat being a big air-cooled twin and don't like riding too slow.
I blame that more on the weather though 'cause it was a stinking hot day.

Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed both the rides.

Arrh that explains it, I missed the joys of Greys Road. With the Pink Ribbon ride they had the break half way round which I guess would have been better for your bike. Trouble is Greys is the only 'interesting' bit, imagine how slow it would be over one of the other hills between the Hutt and the coast

At the moment it seems to be 2 rides per weekend and with commuting that would be 7 days. No time for maintenance etc so I have been choosing which rides I go on. I guess the 2 rides a weekend is OK for those that don't ride daily or only have short commutes. So far I haven't had issues with other riders and for the few group rides I do the chance to catch up and meet others is good.

I do admire you sidecar riders. Only tried one once, it was an Ariel 500 and the thing turned an insistant left on starting off confronting me with a ditch. Certainly had a charater one would never forget. Oh the days of real motorcycling.

I did the Nelson one, clutch in clutch out all the way in first gear for 30-40 odd minutes one burst up to 50km/h for about 150 metres and back down to a crawl again. No air around those big air cooled pots, things certainly get hot:baby:

The heat shouldn't be too much of an issue for the bike. Maybe your legs. I rode a Buell XB12SS through the Nevada Desert in 48 deg heat no issue. With the bike anyway!

The curse of :sunny: Nelson. Comne up to Windy Wellington and we get some air around those pots  Actually, as nudemetalz hi-lighted, there wasn't any wind here to cool yours pots last weekend either.

I probably wont ever attend another charity ride and the reason for that is, they can become a dangerous environment in which to ride.
Speed is not controlled, its everyone for themselves mostly.
At times you are riding at 120-130 khp and then hard on the brakes down to 50-60kph.
There is no enjoyment involved.
Not everyone can hear the ride brief (if there is one given) and even when they can hear, it counts for nothing.

5-6 bikes is good group size.

I actually got into 2nd gear a couple of times on the D650 on the Nelson Toy Run.
We were mainly in 50kph zones with 2 short 70 and 80 zones...

The bikes were fcukin hot at the end...

The othing I had a problem with was on yesterday's Toy Run. I had about 6 Harleys around me all with fairly "open pipes". I had to look at the rev counter to see what gear I was in half the time  .

"So Hunny, how was your ride today" ?
"Was great, but for safety purposes, the Guzzi really needs some loud pipes" :msn-wink:
"Oh okay go on then...you're never gonna give up are you...."

I've done my fair share of large group rides over the years, and quite frankly, i'm over them.
Seems all the prima donas get out there and race to the finish while the rest just cruise and bake.
Would rather chuck the money in a jar and mail it to the charity (and i do by the way) than choke myself on a ride so slow and boring.
I like to ride with a few mates and actually do some miles then have a long winded slog along a motorway to get to no where.:msn-wink:

Thats one of the reasons I didn't go since the Furry pillion doesn't like those open pipes we get around us and shows a distnct reluctance to go biking again afterwards.

Numbers have dwindled on the Auckland Westpac Helicopter ride over the years..
Still gets a reasonable turnout but nothing like it did 6-7 years ago when I first went.
