Anyone had any issues with their FXR? When my bike died at BoB, I just put it down to maybe running out of fuel. After I had checked the plug and wiggled some wires etc <_< I had managed to get it to start again on some rollers. It had coughed and spluttered and pretty much rolled to a stop during the race.
However yesterday after running fine at KOR Rd4 during the last race of the day it played up again. Again it was a pretty hot day, didnt seem that keen to kickstart for the last race of the day, so ended up bump starting it. Ran strong for the warm up, got an OK start but coming off the top sweeper for the first lap, it starting coughing and missing pretty bad, so ended up pulling over just past the start/finish line. Pushed the bike back to the van, as it was pretty much the last race, didnt bother messing around too much, just loaded it in the back of the van.
So anyway, today I unloaded the bike, and tried to start it. Sure enough, first kick, braaaappppp, and sits there idling perfectly ....
Hmmm, coil breaking down, HT lead, ? Any ideas?

Not sure if this helps, but I had a similar problem with an NSR. Would run fonr for about 15 - 20 mins then run rough, then one cylinder, then die completely. Parked it up let it cool down and then it was off again for another 15 mins. Turned out to be the CDI, so maybe have a look at that as well. Should be easy to swap parts from someone elses bike in until it stops doing it.

If they're faster than you make sure you then give them your old parts back.

Mine is a bit like that.
Gets harder to kick start as the day goes on. Haven't had a hot day for ages, but I think it also started to miss when it got real hot.

When I've had an issue with a CDI in the past, its generally been a no spark one, don't think it has related to rough running.

Not a problem I have had, but myself I would starting with the coil. But that is only a best guess. If you can get hold of one swap it out for the next meet and see if it fixes the problem

Checked your valve clearances lately? Mate had a Z1300 that a shop mis adjusted the valves on so badly that after 20 minutes the clearances would close up so completely that it would run out of compression. The electrics on FXRs seem to be pretty reliable as a rule.

hey Gav, I had the same fault for ages and it was doing my head in. We swapped every electrical component (except stator) off AdamB's bike with no fix, even when i ran one of Brens engines in my frame the fault was there. I totally stripped the loom when i fitted it to the TZR. By accident i found a spade terminal broken into the voltage regulator. It was inside the plastic plug so was near impossible to see....... As Henk said the FXR electrics are usually bulletproof. Go looking, but im saying dont look to hard it may be something as simple as my fault!

Cool, thanks guys, have a few things to try. Might move the CDI too, mine doesnt live under the seat where it use to be, it has spent most its life on the inside of one of the frame rails. Recently I moved it so it sits under the tank and ummm above the engine. Probably gets pretty hot there. This has been between BoB and last weekend. Might move it back to the rear of the bike somewhere.
Don't think I have ever checked the valve clearances tbh, but certainly will be checking the wire harness / connectors closely.
