View Full Version : Stolen bike question

flyingcr250

just had a random visit at 7am from a huge maori fella with more tattoos than i could count wanting to "buy my van",
Just a question for all the people that have had bikes go missing in the upper/central north island, did you have a similar thing happen before your bike went missing? Or am i being paranoid, stereotypical and racist??:(

My bike was in my van at the time he came round.......

yep weed and or P will do that for ya :bleh:

It plays to worry a little and therefore ensure the bike is put away and the van locked.

I don’t know if stereotyping and racism is necessarily a factor, unless you wouldn’t be equally as suspicious of a clean-cut white guy scoping your van at 7am.

I'll never get why people only ever post half the story on threads like this....

1. Was the Van for sale?
2. Was the Van somewhere highly visible? (ie. driveway/on the street)
3. Do you have obvious For Sale signs on it?

If any of those are true then no I wouldn't be suss as he might just have been passing and seen it, not had any credit so knocked on the door.
If all those are NOT the case, then yeah I'd be suspicious as heck as if it's not the bike he's after, why the hell is ANYONE scoping out a random, not for sale van at 7am?

We often have vehicles for sale and people are generally just bloody idiots IMHO cause even when there is nothing out there, we get asshats knocking on the door at all sorts of random hours, from 6am to midnight (like they think we might have nothing better to do) asking about them.
I'm really rude to people who don't call first or who turn up at silly times without prior arrangement.
They get an even ruder response where there isn't even a car out with a sign on it LOL

No its not for sale, theres no for sale sign on it, i live off the main road, the guy knew my name, when i asked how he knew my name he changed the subject, he said he wanted it for parts for his broken down van, but when i asked what van he had, again the subject changed,
then he told me about some other vans he knew of in hamilton and asked if they were my mates, said they all had bikes like me, so again i asked where he got all this info from, again he deflected,

Maybe this is all innocent and he realy wanted to buy my van, but to me the circumstances and the lack of answers to my questions had me a little suspicious, so i was just asking if anyone else had a similar thing happen before bikes were taken or houses were robed,

Oh and he said he was from up north but wouldnt say from where.......

Given that info id be rather concerned and would be right down a full description of the guy while its still fresh in your mind just in case sounds rather suspect to me but hey ive hay 2 stolen who knows maybe he was hoping you didn't answer the door or where still asleep saw you weren't so tried to cover it up as to why he was on your property. But id be hiding my bike for a while and making sure the van is disabled at night.

Not worth the risk, dodgy as fuck. Go stash it at your folks place or something. I'd rather deal with having to make 2 extra trips each time you want to go ride, than have my bike stolen.

Now, if you had actually bothered to post all of that the first time, you might have got better answers.......
:bash::bash::bash::bash::bash:

Yes, I'd have considered that suspicious enough to text a mate while he was chatting to send the cops round........ Hope you reported it and got a rego off whatever vehicle he arrived in.

I wouldn't think you paranoid, a 7am visit is a time that you would normally be at work or on the way? If there was no answer it would have been the ideal time to have a quick snoop around. He knew your name so if any neighbor bailed him up he would say he was just looking for you. When my house go done a couple of years ago the cops said that one guy would come around in the morning dressed nice with a clipboard (survey or something) finding out if people were home. They got busted because a 14 year old girl was skipping school and didn't want to answer the door to a big Maori bloke. When they came back she hid in the closet and called the cops.
It is only $300 or so to insure a dirt bike per year, well worth it I'd say.

Not hard to turn up at a local track show some interest while watching and innocently talk to people or make some comment as in wow who's that guy etc etc take a few details and follow you home. Why would someone from UP north come down your way so early looking at a van on the off chance you where home. Then asks you about the other vans/bikes so he has a name when he turns up there just in case some one is home when he gets there.

Come on Barty that is a pretty far fetch story, if you were at the track, then why not talk to the person there and then?

Based on the info given (no 4 sale signs etc...) YEP be paranoid. But be proactive as well and move the bike to another address.
Its not rocket science.

From what you say cobber, it's as suspicious as all hell. Stereotype or not, he knows your name where you live and come's around when you're probably not going to be home. Nope that's not paranoia, HE"S A FUCKEN THEIF!
Hope you got his rego (probably a stolen car anyway) but in your shoes I'd have my bikes off site for a month or two as suggested above. I hate these theiving pricks...

Cause then you would know the guy had seen you before and would really be thinking it odd that that he didnt ask about your van at the track way turn up at your house if you hadnt given him your address (cause odds are you where followed or spotted at some point on the way home) You would look a little out a place going round asking everyone at a track hey your van up for sale. makes a lot more less sus to just ask at your home or say that someone had said when you turn up if caught out by someone being at home. These guy are dumb but not dumb enough not to have an excuses ready at hand just in case your home.

Move your bike somewhere safe & lay some bait you could try a Dakota Murs alert system let's you know when you have Insurgents outside in the target area as well as a cellphone trail cam 4 a live view & a selection of non lethal instruments so you don't hurt them to much in the first hour of Interrogation.

If that happened to me I would be keeping my bike and van anywhere other than my house, and going with alarms, cameras, immobilisers, the lot.

Yes I see potential thieves everywhere I go now, but with my garage broken into twice and my car once (last month, but it was alarmed so only the window was broken, I suspect they took off after that), I think I have cause to. Though I would definitely be much less paranoid if the van was on tm or had for sale signs all over it.

MMad - good thinking

As its been said above get the bike off site ASAP, seems really sus that he mentioned about other vans he has seen with bikes in.

Bro if I lived in Ngaruawahia Id be more concerned if it were a white fella lol. But seriously there's some good advice given. Just treat everything as a potential theft risk (Will give purpose for your paranoia :) ). Although if someone really wants to steal somthing they will most likely get it, a bike bolted and chained to your garage floor will certainly lessen the risk. Go take ya beast for a ride that usually puts things into perspective:niceone:

If you havent "opted out" your personal details can be purchased from the NZTA.

Anyone who asks and pays the fee gets your name address etc. If you have opted out, only 97% of the people who ask get your personal information.

Oh YEAHHHHH sounds dodgy AS!! good call not having your bike at home...... Yes Barty's scenario may have sounded far fetched but this is kinda what is happening up north ways - fuckers follow you home, scope you out and nick your ride - and whatever else is easy to grab - heaps of bikes getting nicked lately (does it ever stop?)

Oh yup, I always approach complete strangers wanting to buy their shit....... NOT

Go with your instincts - their ususally right

7am knock on the door with supposed for sale enquiry? Already suspicious... Changing subject when questioned? Very suspicious.

We've had those encounters: Knock on the door in the middle of the day (when it's assumed everyone will be at work) asking if car if for sale or someone named so-and-so is home. I'm quite sure if no one was home, there'd be a good chance the next thing to be knocked would be the door lock or window.

A neighbour of mine said that some dude just walked into his garage and starting hauling things away. When caught and questioned, he just said he was helping his friend move stuff and sorry, he must have the wrong house! Yeah right!
