"Wellington Police District Operation Unite Commander Inspector Peter Baird says of the 11,188 motorists stopped and breath tested at 43 various checkpoints over the weekend, 50 people were found to be over the limit."
One would wonder, with a catch rate like that, when it is going to dawn on the Plod that such an operation is a huge waste of resource...

I dunno... that's 50 fewer drunks on the road, potentially killing innocents. The social cost of that is huge. Still, that's an excellent rate, which hopefully shows that less people are drink driving... ?
I'm quite happy to have the drink level at 0 for everyone.

Or perhaps, if someone comes up with a more efficient way to catch people.

I'm not gonna give up my right to have a refreshing drink after work then go about my afternoon/evening happenings because 0.5% of the population are morons.
It would be exactly the same as the anti smacking laws. The fuckwits beating their kids knew they were breaking the law already, so nothing has changed for them.

I wonder how many of the 50 were repeat offenders, and how many were currently on suspension or had unpaid fines for the same offense.
I don't think its a waste of resources, the number is probably only so low because these check are performed; and it makes the roads a lot safer than just rego checkpoints.

Was this just in Wellington? or nation wide?
There has been a huge increase of checkpoints here, not all for drink drivers either.
There was one this morning at 7:45am.

I live in a little town and last week 7 drink-drivers were picked up at random.
One had 6 previous and another 4 previous convictions.
Some never learn.

Except it would remove that excuse of... but I didn't know I would be over the limit. I do agree however, that it doesn't fix those ignoring the current rules, same as child beating, same as dog registration etc etc.

There is always an increase in the lead up to Christmas, due to all the Christmas functions.

As I've been personally affected by a repeat drink driver, I would support roadside punishment for anyone caught say on a second or third offence. It's the attitude of the drink driver that has to be altered. Ten years hard labour is a good start....living in a tent....
Why should we tolerate anti-social behaviour?

My answer to repeat drink-drivers would result in a vast increase in those learning Braille and an equal increase in the sale of white canes...<_<

So you would simply get them to continue doing what they are doing, but with an education? :drinknsin

After my 'education' they would only be doing the first part of what they had been doing - the drinking part...:msn-wink:

When it gets to that point though do the people have a driving problem or a drinking problem? If the latter then no amount of driving penalties are going to change things.

Part of the problem is society does not ostracise those people enough
"More than two dinking driving convictions?"
"Sorry sir, then you can't have that job/loan/mortgage/hire-purchase agreement or enter pubs and you have to go to the back of the hospital list or ever have a drivers licence for the rest of your life etc."
And your mates now all hate you.
But even that won't work with some...

6 months loss of licence. resit driving test and 24 months with a ZERO alchohol limit would be the first and easy step.

Maybe we're thinking with too narrow a view....repeat offending leads to roadside executions and organ harvesting maybe? Not sure if the alcohol lobby would approve of losing customers this way though...but would shorten the waiting lists for organ transplants.

The breath-test stations also pick up stolen cars, banned drivers and all sorts of other arseholes.
I say good on 'em. 50 drunk-drivers is still 50 too many. Also, as others have said, better this than camping out with a radar/laser pinging people for going 10km/h over the limit.

one reason people never learn is financial penalty doesn't work! at this stage people are so used to having money taken from them, whats a little more??? directly affect them then they may learn!
Hell a week in the cells would do more than the current "pay us monies & we'll let you go do it again" system we currently use. At-least then your taking something away from them, a week of their life they will never get back

I thought some papers did a name and shame list with the usual outcry?
Considering the odd lawyers are charging a min of 10 grand to try to get their clients off, I would think there is a stigma around (being a low life drunken fucktard with no self discipline or regard for any other living thing or property around their miserable stinking lives) driving convictions considering these little festering lawyers dens stay open for business.
A drink/drugs checkpoint is just a net across the road so the report in the papers should include all the other little fish they catch outside of just road policing. Especially when the bailiffs, maf, vehicle inspectors "both heavy and compliance" and immigration are all part of the fishing net.

Hawkes Bay Today does.
Maybe it works too? The checkpoint/s here last w/e stopped a shade under 5000, with (only) 7 over the limit.
