View Full Version : ZXR work to be done?

So I picked up a ZXR 250c the other day pretty much on a whim, got it fairly cheap and the body/fairings are in pretty mint condition but it needs a bit done to it:
New sprockets/chain
Cam chain/tensioner thing (I have no idea, the thing rattles and a bit of research points to that as the likely culprit)
Full service/good bloody cleanout.
So I'm looking for recommendations on where to go for that in Auckland, a place that knows its stuff and is reasonable, any experiences?
I've also noticed patches of surface rust inside the petrol tank, is that easy to fix myself or should I take it to someone or just get a new tank?
Cheers

All with the exception of the cam-chain are easy to do yourself.
Before committing to replacing the tensioner/chain do this;
On the rear of the engine, under the carbs is the cam chain tensioner.
It will have three bolts, two smaller (probably 8mm head) on the outside and one central one (12mm from memory)
Undo the central one first, take care though, there is tension from behind from the spring.
Remove the unit and clean it carefully, check for wear on the teeth and foot at the end.
Check for kinks/tight spots in the spring.
Make sure the tensioner foot/arm extends easily.
Double check.
Put it back in.
Take off your timing cover and rotate the engine by hand 3 or 4 times, you might hear the tensioner clicking in to place.
Have fun :niceone:
As for mechanics in Auckland? No idea mate.
Get a POR15 Tank sealing kit too.

Might give that a crack.. I did find this (http://zxr250.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=guides&action=display&thread=126) helpful link but I wouldn't want to mess anything up..

It's easy enough.
Just be careful and refer to pictures. Remember to turn the motor over with a spanner or what have you after re-assembly several times.
