For those that don't like waffle, here is the photo reel for ya

Check back soon for the crash reel.

It was great fun, a bit of dodgy weather for a spell Saturday morning - that had it's interesting moments. Well organised, lots of great company to ride with!

Thanks Mike, Angela and co. :niceone:

+1 Descending steep hills on wet grass, slicker than teflon. You eventually get faith in your suspension though.

Wet grass with knobblies or any tyres not easy, & it gets you when you least expect!! I ended up with a chopper ride into Hasting's Hospital 2.5 years ago with a leg that needed a plate & a rod & wrist a plate on similar terrain on an organised trail ride when doing a down hill. Prior to that I had never broken a thing!

If you use a ball point pen to draw along the outer edges of the red area, you can measure any increase in infection. If it does spread you may need to see a doctor pronto. Cellulitis can be a problem.

Just missed you in the STH ISLAND. We went through the Molesworth and Rainbow on the 29th. It was raining all the way through the Rainbow, I think Nic said it wasn't raining in the morning when you guys went through. As we rolled into Murchison we saw someone waving at us. I was looking around to see who they were waving at, then took another look and realized it was Nicolar. Nice surprise. We got a place to stay and had diner with her. The next day she headed for Motueka and we headed south.

Now make sure you work on the bike a few times only using those tools, then you'll know that you've got all the right bits in there.

it was made out of some some scrap upholstery grade material, it's not really rigid enough though, so thinking of sewing some denier or plastic type stuff on the back.

it was about 24cm wide from memory (with the ends folded in and sewn) and about 45cm long

Folded a small towel in half and sewed some lines to make pockets.
Goes into the tube nicely and quietly.

Oh, also an idea to put some foam at the end of the tube otherwise the vibration will make the tools punch through the roll.

Now you need a puncture repair kit, and an air compressor, wire, tape, zip ties, nuts, bolts, screws, uh... ;)

Best trick for building a kit is to only use it when working on the bike, then you find out what you do and don't need...

Looking good. My recommendations for smallerisation: a folding t-handle (e.g. from Torpedo 7), the appropriate sockets, plus a bit adapter and the appropriate bits. That would do away with the screwdriver, the socket handle, and potentially your allen keys (which I don't see, but might be in there somewhere?)
Is the adjustable crescent for a particular use, or is it a just-in-case? I just carry the spanners or sockets I need for my bike, and figure that the vise-grips are good enough for anything oddly-sized on someone else's bike

http://i1002.photobucket.com/albums/af144/Shewolfnz/feetpants.png

I prefer the weird 3 finger rain gloves, the mittens were too restrictive for lots of hand work.

I'm keen to know what works for others that have ridden for sustained periods at 0 or below?

Night Falcon
1st August 2012, 21:50
layers sure are the way to go. My gear was pretty good except for my hands. Bought a new pair of dryrider gloves and some thermal gloves but still got cold fingers, so cold almost ran into a bank cos i couldnt get my fingers to work fast enough on the front break....might be worth some heated grips for next year :baby:

Rosie
6th August 2012, 17:07
The midwinter ride is the closest I have got to riding for sustained periods at very low temperatures, but I am an internationally-recognised expert at feeling the cold so I feel qualified to comment.

Lots of layers is the way to go (I got up to 8 upper-body clothing layers on the MMMMM). Having a good proportion of quick drying technical fabrics in your layers is good if it rains and you have limited time/ability to get things dry again. Good quality fleece, polypro and Kathmandu's "thermaplus" are all good (I recently got two themaplus tops, and I really like them). That said, I also wear some icebreaker stuff. If one of your layers has a turtleneck, it helps to seal up the gap between your jacket and your neck warmer. Sleeveless layers add a lot of warmth without movement-restricting bulk, and can be worn on their own when the weather improves. Actually, I try to choose all my layers of stuff so that they can be worn as stand-alone clothes (or as a long sleeved layer under a tshirt). While I appreciate that individual tastes do vary, I suspect your skin-toned spencer may not pass that test ;)

Clint used to have a windproof neck warmer (windstopper fleece), which seems like a good idea. I'm going to investigate getting one of those. Presumably you also have a balaclava?
I have icebreaker knee-length snowboarding socks, which keep my legs nice and warm, and my feet warm-ish. I'm going to try wearing a second set of merino ankle socks under them to keep my feet a bit warmer (icebreaker multisport socks, because I already own a set). I also wear my sealskinz waterproof socks if it looks like it might rain, or if there will be water crossings. They also help to keep my feet a bit warmer.

A few of us kb'rs went to India to ride Royal Enfields from Shimla to Leh in July - me, Big Col, Mrs Big Col, Nic, Maddad and Mrs Maddad. The rest were mostly kiwi's, a few aussies, english, dane and irish.

3 weeks of twisty roads, insane traffic, goat tracks, no tracks, glaciers to ride through, water crossings, highest motorable road in the world, lots of curry and mangey dogs that bark all night.

About a third of the 20 riders suffered delhi-belly - fortunately none of us seem to have been struck. Must've been the copious amounts of Kingfisher beer and Old Monk rum.

After arriving in Delhi we had a bit of sight seeing before lunching at a nightclub (as you do?)

Well done Rhondda & Nic. What a FAB trip. India on Enfields :Punk:
What were the Enfields like to ride ? Easy to kick over ? Height for you 2 ladies ?, how did they handle ? . . . .
Amazing !!! Waiting eagerly for more pics & vids :-)

The "modern" Enfield's are fuel injected and electric start.

we had the option when I was there 15 years ago to get a bullet or a wee honda 125s (I was about 30kg lighter) - went for the wee 125 rented it in Goa (promise we won't leave the state sir) returned it 2 months later with 5 - 6 more k on the clock and a lot of great memories went down the coast to the tip and back up the middle - had to lift it over two rivers so bloody glad I didn't go for the Royal Enfield, only ever had to pay baksheesh once for uninsured out of state bike about 4 pounds from memory (about a day and a half's budget).
You either love India or hate it they say - I love it!!! :woohoo:

Things went a little awry for Rasmus on this leg, he managed to bounce off a boulder that threw him over the side of a rocky ford, luckily no damage to him, some panel beating and mechanical tweaking and the bike and Rasmus were good to go.
