"A 30-year-old Blenheim man took matters into his own hands with a wooden garden stake when he was woken by the sound of his mailbox being damaged early one morning, police say.
Aaron Denis Paul Gotty was sentenced to 200 hours' community work when he appeared in the Blenheim District Court yesterday and admitted assault using a blunt instrument and assault with intent to injure.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Graeme Eden said Gotty was woken by the sound of his mail box being damaged about 2am on November 23. He picked up a 1.4-metre-long garden stake and confronted a small group of people outside his house.
Gotty approached and asked the victim if they had damaged his mailbox. However, before the victim had a chance to reply, Gotty drove the stake into the victim's stomach, Mr Eden said.
Gotty then approached another member of the group and struck him in the chin and hand with the stake, fracturing a bone in the victim's hand. He yelled at the victims, accusing them of damaging his mailbox, before walking back into his house.
He told police he admitted approaching the group, but denied hitting them with a stake, Mr Eden said.
Gotty's lawyer, Kent Arnott, said the man had simply had enough of his mailbox being damaged.
"This was the third time his mailbox had been damaged and when Mr Gotty approached the group, things got out of hand."
It was also Gotty's first conviction for violence.
Judge Tony Zohrab told Gotty his behaviour was unacceptable and there was no excuse for it.
"I understand how this may have happened, but you could have seriously hurt somebody."

Can't even legally defend your own property any more. How sad. Note how they refer to the offender (the vandal) as the "victim"?

Nowhere in the article does it say the group were responsible for damaging the mailbox. There is a big difference between seeing someone damaging your property and assuming someone has done it.

"I understand how this may have happened, but you could have seriously hurt somebody."Tony, Tony, Tony... you ignorant git. Dealing out some serious hurt to the little cocksuckers was the fucking point.
They asked for it, they got it, which was no less than they absolutely deserved. It's not like he stored them in the basement and practised sewing their arses and mouths together...

Isn't it amazing how the legal system is so quick to slap community service and fines etc on 1st time offenders (who are usually just defending themselves or there property & family) , yet when it comes to "actual" criminals, these judges curl into a ball and give the crim's a slap on the wrist! (the crim's know the system...so its to "hard" for the legal system to convict them....that requires effort!...and good morals!)
FUCK EM!, they got what they deserved!...2am in the morning?...they were just waiting for a bus!, yeah right! (Not damaging property and to gutless to admit it!)
One guy with a stick vs a group of vandels....this could have turned out alot worse for the guy defending his property if they had turned on him (As they are known for having balls when in a large group!).....but then the poor little darlings are allowed to do what ever they want ay, after all....they have the law protecting THEM and THERE rights!.
Good on the guy!, maybe these little "punks" will think twice when walking past his house @ 2am...well...do ya feel lucky?...PUNK!

Simple solution here,
Always throw the SECOND PUNCH. Then claim it is self defence.
Keep on hounding them for answers. If Auckland is anything to go by, then a fight will surely break out. (Remember No. 1)
Don't use a weapon unless they already have one. A weapon on both sides negates the advantage.
And finally, DECK THE BASTARDS. :bash:

There is no Second punch if you get hit by someone who knows what they are doing.

He probably DID throw the second punch. but he was alone, and it was a group of vandals. so a group with one story vs one other guy? gee, I wonder who gets beleived, truth or not.
twas a group, at that time of the morning, etc etc, pretty slim odds that it was innocent. and it was a group, hed have to be jackie fucking chan - or stupid, to approach then unarmed and alone.
its just assumptive, but i reckon they did it, he went out to say what the fuck, they felt tough being in a group and told him to get fucked, he grabbed a stake, they thought the group was enough to intimidate him, and it went from there.
purely speculation though.
If I was woken at 2am in the same circumstances, a cunt would be getting decked. I survived a home invasion by smashing the cunts skull into a doorframe, and id do it again in a heartbeat to defend myself and property for injury or damage.
