So, the bike has sat in the steady rain today for 8 hours and doesnt want to start. It cranked over, but did not come close to getting going...gave it choke of all varieties, but no luck. I am not confident that the tank filler cap seal is up to snuff, but yeah, I can not confirm theres water in the tank. The battery is now close to drained and I missed the last train to masterton at 6:22. Now what?:blank: Wait for a sunny day and try again?

Get some CRC and spray it around the plug leads - might fix it.

Buy some crc and give the plug lead and and electrics a good spray. Then you can bump start it if the battery will not turn it over.

I get the same on my bike - it either becomes hard to start or won't start.
In the past I've had to walk it home from the pub or leave it there overnight and walk it the next day. Then I'd clean the plugs and it'd be back to good as usual (only to happen again another cold or damp night)

Does the warehouse have crc? repco et all are closed for the day...
I've bump started this bike before, but such a light bike does not have much weight over the rear wheel, so it probably wont get much traction on these wet streets. I'll need a fat lady...warehouse here I come.
I dont think i flooded it, I usually just crack open the throttle to get tit started instead of choke immediately....

Bump start it in 2nd, its always easier,
Does the bike have an exposed air box/filter? could be filling with water, if its a common thing I recommend you buy a bike cover.

on these baby ninja's the airbox is underneath the seat and behind fairings on each side, so I do not suspect the airbox is full. I am more leaning toward moisture around the sparkplug leads, most likely near the coils. My friends in welly are all MIA. I might have to sleep under my desk at work, lol

If the roads are that slippery, I would be going for a higher gear than second.:headbang:

haha why oh why was I worrying? CRCed the lead side and the wiring harness side of each coil and the bike fired up after a few trys!!!:headbang::headbang::headbang:
so, that mini, overpriced can of CRC is staying under the seat at all times, right next to the dog turd tire repair kit and mini bicycle pump....I hope the other newbies are listening!!! :niceone:
BTW, these 250s are so little you can bump start them by just walking next to them, wonder how the big bikes do it solo? <---sounds dirty:devil2:

.
It's called a "bump" start because you run like fuck next to the bike then "bump" your arse onto it at the same time as dumping the clutch. Otherwise it'll just do skidz.
Extension lead, girlfriend's hairdryer + WD40 and watch the water come out of places it shouldn't.

I learned the magic CRC trick many many years ago when I had a car wouldn't start and the AA man used it. Never been without it since.

Mechanical engineer working on the engine layout design for the new Mini, 50-odd years ago:
"Hmmm, where should we put this coil, hmmm.... I know, down here where any rain or water from puddles will fire directly at it. It's all Lucas electrics, it will be ok when it gets wet."

Prevention is the cure!
When I rebuilt all the electrics on PhatGirl, I used "electrical grease"...??...I know!...I had never heard of it either!....but found a shop that sold it and put it in all the wiring connections and blocks (and ran extra earths off every major component...it is italian after all)
That was nearly three yrs ago....NEVER had a problem since!....and this is a GUZZI we are talking about! (Not really known for electrical reliability )
She starts easy and runs all year round as everyday transport....rain hail or shine!
Electrical grease!!...CRC product, keeps all the water out!....get some for your next pre winter sevice, you won't regret it.:niceone:

I don't like running fast :devil2:
Neither do I ... especially pushing a heavy bike ...
Hence I bought a RELIABLE bike ... and buy quality batterys ...
And look after them ...
