Newbie wanting info on Yamaha XT 250

HI out there. I've had my learners for a few weeks now and have been busy exploring gravel back roads on the Honda NXR 125 I made road legal after cleaning it up from Farm use.

It's along time till Oct when I read the new LAMs approuch to bike selection comes out. I feel very vunerable on the 125 on the odd section of open road I invariably have to ride on my gravel road tours. Full noise it will do 95.6kph on the GPS, but I wouldn't want to run her there for long though. A true 80kph is where she is happy.

Will the XT 250 cruise happily at a true 100kph? I live at Reporoa and wondering if there were any Xt 250 owners in Rotorua or Taupo I could hook up with to talk about the bike and maybe take it for a ride.

I hope to do a 4 day loop from here next week, Waikaremoana, Tinirota, Matawai Awakeri HPs home via gravel road thru Rerewhakitu. I know the spelling isn't the best.

Good luck with this Brian. I'm a road rider and living in Matiere, am keen on a small trail bike to use on the farm and explore some disused railway lines/tunnels down here - how do you find the wee Honda ? Grunty enough off road? Cheers

It's fine on the back roads as I only go slowly 20 to 40kph, so I can stop in time to take photos. I'm really quite light at 65 kgs which must make a difference. The great thing about the NXR is it so very quite I can stil hear the Tui and Bellbirds while riding.

I am not an XT250 owner but when buying a small trail bike for my wife I looked seriously at the XT. Couldn't get one for my price but on testing it found it more than capable of holding 100 k's with my 100 + kg's on board.

You could consider having 2 front sprockets, 1 for road and 1 for the trail.

There are a few nice ones floating around at the moment, just buy the best your budget will allow.

That's what I wanted to here. By the time I get my camping gear etc on board I'll be up to about 85kgs.

Now all I have to do is find the right one and get perrmision to buy it from the tresurer.

I sat on one in the shop and it felt not much bigger than the NXR. As I stop allot to take photos I like to stay on the bike and have both feet firmly planted on the ground, especially with panniers on.
