View Full Version : TS185 doesn't want to rev much

Problem solved, thanks everyone!
I recently got a new spark plug for my TS185 from a Suzuki bike dealer, I put a new air filter in and a fuel filter. Since I've only just gotten the bike and I wasn't sure if the oil injection was working properly, I added some 2 stroke oil to the fuel tank (I mixed it to around 30:1 at the most). After that the bike started running a bit rough and it doesn't want to rev hard like it did before.
I then drained most of what was in the fuel tank, cleaned the spark plug, then added 5L of fresh fuel and had the same problem. After that I drained most of the fuel from the tank again (leaving only around 2L), then added 6L of fresh fuel and had the same problem. I then cleaned the spark plug and it still won't rev hard, either in neutral or in gear.
I disconnected the air box and it runs worse, so I connected it back up. The fuel filter has a lot of fuel in it and since it's a clear filter I had a look and there's no obvious blockage in it. If I give it any more than about half throttle it just wants to die.
The choke isn't on either.

You didn't make up your own filter and fill the airbox like you were going to did you?

I got a big sponge and lightly oiled it and put it in the factory air box. I then closed the air box and put my mouth on the end of the air box hose and sucked hard (insert gay joke here) to feel if there was much restriction in it. I could breathe easily through it so it doesn't seem overly restrictive.

Was it proper air filter foam? The air box needs some empty volume also. Do yourself a favour and get the proper air filter.

Dunno 'bout the bogging thing but running a Suzuki with their CCI system on premix without some fairly serious mod's will fuck one of the mains and possibly the bigend, they're fed oil directly from the pump.

Yeah I realise that and I've left the oil injection system hooked up with plenty of 2 stroke oil in it.

It had a heavy dose of oil with the premix and the injection.
Just changing from the std air-box to a pod type filter needs a jet change or at least moving its clip.
It doesn't happen often but sometimes new plugs shit themselves very quickly if your changing to many things at once maybe try the old sparker after a clean out.
If no change and your filter is different from std try a new plug and moving the clip down a notch checking the plug colour as you go.

It was just a car wash sponge that I bought a few years ago from the ware whare. The sponge only takes up about half the volume of the air box, the rest is just empty.

Precisely.

Get the proper air filter. Yeah yeah I know you know heaps more than the engineers at Suzuki......

So you changed a bunch of stuff and it doesn't run as good as it did before you changed it.
Recommend that you put it all back to how it was before, and see if it runs OK. If it does, then only change one thing at a time.

I put the stock air filter in and it runs great now. Heaps of power!

As the old saying goes ... if it works ... dont fuck with it ...
So ... you are still running the original oil injection ... AND added a 30:1 (I think that is heavy for one with an existing oil feed) into the fuel as well ... and wonder why you have problems. You may need to clean out the carb, and use fresh fuel ... NO oil added.
Wring the filter cloth out ... it will still be not breathing properly as it may be sucking oil from there ... Considering it had holes in the previous one ... try not oiling the existing one. See how THAT goes.
