My restroation project is almost complete. Bike is ready to be vinned.....but!

1 - I have no plates
2 - Talked to the local VTNZ guy and he said I need a declaration from the two previous owners
3 - Only got the previous owner I bought the bike from, the bike was not on the road at that point, as he bought it from a collector.
4 - That previous owner gave me an email address, which wasn't from his previous owner, but the mechanic he got the mechanics report off of.....

Need evdience that the bike has been registered in NZ I contacted Suzuki NZ but for an 82 model bike, their records dont go back that far...

What's my next step?

Keen to see if any info comes to light on this. I'm in a similar situation and only have a proof of ownership/sale from previous owner. no plate, no history etc.

Check that Police have no interest in it ... there are forms required I believe ... and declare it as an import. (dont say it was you that imported it)

Imports shouldn't be banned from use (legally) on the road in NZ.

A handy link ...

http://nzta.govt.nz/resources/factsheets/09/reregistering-your-vehicle.html

In step one (of five) evidence of INSURANCE is enough ... and may be possible to find out an insurance company bike shops used at the time of sale in 82 (or later) Their records will cover THAT time I'm sure.
Bank records ... (just my own thoughts) if the bike was used as security as a loan, they will have records of all the appropiate required details.
Photos ... showing the registration plate. Motorbike/owners clubs may have photos/details.
Bike shops in the area(s) the bike "lived" may have records of work done. (ie:WOF with rego number)
Suzuki NZ will most likely HAVE records ... but not on a computer file.
Any previous owners with speeding tickets ??? (nobody forgets THOSE) ... Old Ministry of Transport records maybe ... ???

what you really need, is a declaration from the cops that it is not stolen, or a vehicle of interest.
Do you have the Vin number? Im fairly sure you can run the Vin number on carjam, and it will tell you what the last number plate was that it used. You could also write to the ltsa and ask to be forwarded onto the right department to help match your vin to the last recorded rego.

Once you have your vin, and know what the last plate it had on it was, you take this info to the police, they do a quick check and you get a bit of paper from them.
After that, you take the bit of paper, and the bike, and go to whoever you are getting to do the revin, and provided your bike is up to scratch you can ride away on your newly legal bike.

what if you run the VIN and it comes back that there is no plate/reg tied to that vin at all ever.

no history. and confirmation from police that the vin is of no interest to them/not reported stolen..

What you have to do is swear a statutory declaration saying you haven't nicked the bike. You can swear one at the local citizens advice bureau. The police no longer do the "not of interest" thing. A stat dec is recognised for re-registration of the bike. I re-vinned and regoed a bike a year ago.

hmm might look into it.. I have tried registering this bike a few years ago when it was all restored. I basically only went to VTNZ and they told me that I couldnt because it hadn't been registered in NZ before at all and I had no import info etc..

so its not really a re-vin or a re-reg.. its a first time vin/first time reg. I'v looked up all the numbers, engine, chassis/vin and it really never has been registered in NZ before. Cops said not a vehicle of interest back in 07/08. Should still be same status as the bikes been under a cover since

Carjam came up with nothing....

Rang LTSA and they are going to see what can be tracked down. However because there is no record on their eletronic system someone would have to go through the hard copy of archives.
The other option is to fill out an "Alternative Document" which verifies the vehicle, and has to be stamped by a motorcycle club....hmm does this mean I can stamp it myself as Im a KB'er? :killingme

There was a police report done for the bike, but the previous owner didn't have the paper anymore, but did say it wasn't of interest to anyone.

As your bike is 30 years old next year you might considering joining the Vintage Car Club as they do this all the time with old cars and bikes. They know people...good people.
I put a Chaing Jaing on the road a few years back and most places told me to bugger off....but when I found out the right person he was able to sort it out quite easily.

Ok I had to re vin the Honda XL500s I had, I went to a VINZ rather than a VTNZ.
I got the forms through VINZ, first is a Police Decaration form, this si just to say that the Police have no interest in the Vechicle, ie is not stolen, the second is a form from a Justice of the Peace, legaly declearing you are the true owner of the vechicle, the next letter you require is a letter from the Importer, stating that when the vechicle Modelwas brought into the country, it was done so to be registered as a road going vechicle.
Next step was to take all this paper work in and the bike to get an inspection + WOF, once WOF'ed, then paying for a VIN tag, new REG Plate and 6 months REG.
I found dealing with VINZ over VTNZ better as I was more likely to be dealing with the same inspector, as I have found VTNZ tend to move their inspectors around a bit.
