The battle of the bulge is being lost, with more than half of the population in the dangerous weight zone.

A staggering 63 per cent of New Zealanders are either overweight or obese, according to a survey by market researcher Roy Morgan.

Well BMI isnt always a great indication unless you want a nation of anorexics. Nearly all of the all black squad would be classed as 'overweight'

eg - Ritchie McCaw at 1.87m tall and 106kg = BMI 30

BMI result

"according to a survey by market researcher Roy Morgan."

I wonder who would be sitting around with time to do his survey? Wouldn't be us fatties as we are too busy watching telly or re-heating the pies.

We are getting fatter because the marketing companies want us to. The fat isn't real it is all just spin.

Common argument used by fatties, but it doesn't work because fuck all kiwi's are built like richie mccaw. Maybe subtract 2% from that 65% in the article.

If you're 106kg with low body fat then fine, but odds are that if you're 106kg you're a cheeseburger munching lard arse!

I'm 1.81 and 96kg so it works out at 29.

Def got some body fat to shed and I have no trouble with 'overweight' tag except when its dished out by the scrawny nurse at the practise I use. I work out strenuously 4 times (min) a week and have never been fitter or stronger. All I'm saying is that BMI is not a reliable indicator for people that take exercise like weight training seriously unless they are marathon runners..... In fact I bet the bloody BMI was invented by a damn runner - or a ballet dancing fairy cyclist - scrawny bloody bastards taking revenge on us - I hates them I do.....

180cm and 85kg = bmi of 26.2 which means I'm overweight. No way.
I run, cycle, do gym bootcamps, ride off road and wouldn't carry more than 15% fat.
I reckon the scale is set for people with no muscle mass so they weigh very little.

The scale is set by the American medical insurance industry. A year or so back they lowered the BMI so whereas before hand you might have been normal they can now say you are a risk and adjust the insurance accordingly. Reality has nothing to do with it.
Doesn't matter to me cause I know I am Obese no matter what table they use.

I reckon the scale is set for people with no muscle mass so they weigh very little.

This "BMI" scale does not take into consideration such things as body composition i.e muscle mass, bone density blah, blah, blah de blah. It only is a very vague indicator/benchmark/measure of height over weight....so rather pointless.

Not a very accurate measure to tell you if you are a fatty fat or not.

Get a fat pinch/skinfold test done, and if the calipers can't open far enough over your many cheese incrusted folds, then you know you are a fat fuck.

Sorry you will just have to switch to walking but you might also have to have a little op as I note the study was only on woman.

Women who walk at least 10,000 steps a day have no greater muscle strength and perform no better on tests of balance and agility than women who walk fewer than 7500 steps, according to a new study
Researchers did find, however, that extra walking each day is tied to favourable measures of body fat, weight and endurance

So once we are all skinny anorexic little plebs with no body condition they can release that the next virus to reduce the population. Got love a conspiracy theory.

that ab circle pro makes me giggle. the ads talk about "the equivalent of 100 situps in just three minutes" or something. But you could do 100 situps in three minutes. Well 100 crunches. not me, obviously. but fit people.

All while not looking like a complete tosser.

Because the BMI chart is literally a chart on mass, it seems unfair when people come in all shapes and sizes. I think a more meaningful indicator on the state of things would be a measure of healthiness.

That's not to say the western world isn't full of fat cunts, cos it is.
