hi there,
I am looking to get a scooter to get about the City and am looking for some recommendations - I've been looking for 125cc scooters (I am about 95kgs and live up Ngaio Gorge!) and want something retro looking.
I've been looking at the Sachs Besbi, but someone on here said the sachs bikes aren't that great. I've got $4k max to spend and would be keen on suggestions.
Also would 125cc be strong enough? I've had people tell me with the hills and stuff I'm better getting a motorbike, but that seems a bit too scary ;)

Ever considered a Suzuki GN125?
They're priced at $1895 + ORC at the moment.
Spend the balance on some riding gear.

Why is a motor bike more scary than a scooter? The bike has bigger wheels for better balance, stopping etc. Puts you higher in the traffic so better visibility. Hasn't got the wind catcher, which does mean less rain protection. Cager have a tendency to treat scooters even worse than bikes, considering them under powered jokes, they can't tell a 50cc 2Kw model from a 125cc model so they are all just pests.
If you do get a scooter claim your road position and don't ride in the gutter or that is where you will end up.

Unless you are actually keen on a motorcycle, your original idea of a scooter is pretty good. I have a TGB101, its done just on 48,000 km now. I can fit my helmet and gloves under the seat. It takes a full load of shopping and groceries, and it has auxillary front footpags, so you can fold them out, and use the flat are in front of the seat for other stuff. It will actually carry 2x 15 packs of Steinlager there for what its worth.
Just buy a good brand. Stick clear of Chinese rubbish. I can vouch for TGB, mine has been just great, but any of the Jap brands have good reputations as do the Taiwanese Makes.
Euros are great too, but your finances may not stretch that far.

2nd hand GT250 vespa would be best so you can use the motorway up the hills
I am 6"2" and 98Kgs and use a 180 2t every day round AKL and do long trips to taupo etc for fun
had a smaller scooter but could not use motorways etc with out feeling as though a cager was about to run me over

Any decent 125cc scooter will go up Ngaio without problems. A scooter is definitely the "go" in traffic. Good seating position allowing you to look about and the twist and go is good when you get surprised. There is at least a couple of good Taiwanese suppliers who can help you go a bit quicker for little money as well if you end up liking the scooter but wishing for more.
Alibaba has a number of suppliers, I've got some gear from Taida for my Yamaha Cygnus.

ngaio gorge is steep with a few sharpish bends, most cars will be in third, its narrow and ussually there are lots of cyclists so you want a scooter that go 60 ks up a steepish hill and be able to accelerate out of uphill corners from 40 to 60(quite often you cant go the speed you want) out of the best torque band

I have two UZ 125's with about 50,000k total mileage over about 3 years. Injected engine and smaller frame than the AN125. Could loose your license going up Ngaio Gorge (LOL). Cheep on fuel and easy to maintain and plenty of parts. Only downside is need to find them second hand but are cheeper than the AN 125, about $1500 to $2000 on Trademe. I have seen them with 45,000k on the clock with no major maine according to the courier rider who was selling it. Mine each have 25,000 now. Oil and tires are about all they need. They have swing out foot rests, do 90km two up as well and 100km (on GPS) with one, nill wind of course but never less than 90 even in a WLG gale.

Seoncd the TGB101s. I had great fun in the short time I had one. Went surprisngly well, and certainly took what it was was given and still had a bit room for more. I don't believe for a second they are limited to 50k  Of course they arelaughed at by most cagers. If you want one, flick me a PM, The one I had is back up for sale.
