http://www.stuff.co.nz/business/industries/6182773/Maori-hint-at-interest-in-whaling

 Just can't believe this shit...not only do they want to look into whaling...they are also trying to justifie "the use of foreign charter vessels which use low-paid Asian labour to fish Maori quota".(you know...the shitty ones that keep sinking, or are tourturing crew members or not paying them at all...I believe "slave labour" sums it up)

...all in the name of profit!...my how the Iwi involved have "advanced"

heres hoping this dumb idea gets blocked...and those cheap shitty slave labour boats get kicked out of our waters.

Whales...Photograph them!...don't harpoon them!

There is a lot of noise happening in the fishing industry at the moment. Some of it is similar to the kind of noise that was made around ACC a while back so I think we might see some changes coming up.

Frankly I think this particular initiative is just appalling. Its a real 'fuck you' to everyone else that demonstrates that these particular people should not be entrusted with anything of value.

Gareth Morgan has had a bit to say about all this fishing stuff of late - I don't agree with some of what he is saying but its a good read all the same.

3 articles - read in order as below.

It's crazy how things are bad... unless, of course there's a shitload of money to be made. I reminds me of the whole "You can't build your roads here because of the taniwha in the river... unless you pay the iwi several million dollars."

We eat cattle and sheep. Other cultures eat horses, cats and dogs. Whales are just another mammal. As long as they're not hunted to extinction, what's the difference?

Using the same logic - why don't we eat other people? The answer is because its plain wrong to do so because at some point there is always a need to draw a line in the sand and make a stand.

The whales are kinda the poster children of the movement to preserve our marine environments and we like having them around living free. I understand other cultures feel differently but here in nz this is a moral touchstone.

All licensed slaughterhouses in New Zealand are exceedingly humane. Dollars to donuts that video wasn't filmed anywhere near these parts. But people who haven't figured out that meat comes from dead animals could be surprised by the reality that death is involved.

Meh, use to see it every day...

In NZ they still use captive bolt stunning on cattle, on sheep it's electrical stunning - then their throats are cut so they bleed to death.

Before that there was no stunning - grab the sheep, tip it on its side, bend its neck around a post and slice - a good 'sticker' would cut right through in one swipe leaving the head attached by a piece of skin.

Now with stunning the head is left attached to the spinal column and the neck has to be broken later on - and I can tell you there ain't no 'wrist-pump' like the one you get after breaking 3,500 necks in a day..:pinch:

BTW: once the blood-flow to the brain ceases the animal has in effect fainted - the majority of the 'struggling' is nerves, hell look at what a rabbit does when you head-shoot it!

Save the whales, collect the set.

It’s not the whales or the humanity of how or why or even what we eat that concerns me with this.
It’s not the slaves that get abused and held hostage by the captains of the tubs that have netted every living thing in the waters further north.

While both do concern me, more the demise of the whales and fish stock than the humans to be frank, it is the selling off of the already abused Maori fishing quota to un-watched and un-regulated overseas trawlers.
Does the Iwi watch what they take from NZ waters?
I have my doubts…

And where is the money from all of this going?
The Maoris I know aren’t raking in the cash, and the ones I don’t know seem to be struggling along with the rest of us regardless of genetic ancestry.

If my mate from across the road has to toe the same line as the rest of us when he goes out in his boat, is it because his portion of the quota has been sold to some slave ship?
If so, where is his cut?

If they are worried that putting a sanctuary around the Kermadec Islands and that not using slave labour will cut into their profits then should they be trusted with what they have let alone anything else?
If the Iwi are Okay with commercial whaling what did they have planned for the beaches under the foreshore claim?

Certainly casts a shadow over the statement that “It will be for the best as we look after the land”

In a similar vane, where is the money from all the settlements, monster taming, fishing, broadcasting etc actually going?
It’s millions of dollars, tens and hundreds of millions over the years too.
Take a ride through some of the little coastal villages off the beaten track, they need it and are often predominately Maori, so where is their tribe’s assistance package?
It’s like our own small scale dictatorships, the top brass have the cash and to hell with the rest.

...as I may have mentioned before, if a bunch of serious people turned up with pointy sticks, we could frighten the whales and the englands and anyone else that wants to rape and pillage our villages and pretty women...err ...yea!...and what would be an undersized whale if we all wanted to catch one...
