View Full Version : Is there a 4 km/h tolerance this holiday season?

I haven't seen or heard anything about a drop in tolerance this year. Has anyone? Or is this the year they leave it at 9km/h and see if there's more crashes?

Nope the speed scam is 4km/h

"Police would be stopping anyone caught driving at more than 4km/h above the speed limit and would be taking drink-drive breath tests at all times of the day" - Paula Rose

I'm pretty sure the tolerance is always 4km/h, but they enforce it more seriously around holiday times. Go over it at your own peril.

The descretion allowed is 4km/hr. However ... a sniffer will be shoved in your face if you are stopped. And expect a short wait while the vehicle details are given. Plus a "safety" check of the vehicle (that back tyre is a bit bald sir ... thats another $150 and 20 demerits ).

Slow drivers, following distance & speed are their key focus this festive season starting as of 6am this morning I think !!

I got issued a $30 speed camera ticket on Labour Day for 5kph over the limit.
The funny thing was that I was coming back from Hampton Downs with a trailer attached so if I'd have been pulled over I would have been done for more.

I'd already spotted two cameras (both on downhill sections of the motorway) so the one that got me was well hidden.

Remember it's about road safety and not revenue. If you are speeding a ticket that arrives 3 weeks after the event will get you to slow down... (Coming up - we teach pigs to fly)

"Most practically, this sterner attitude led to the trial of a lower tolerance of speeding - down from 10km/h over legal limits to 4km/h - during holiday weekends."

Had you got pulled over ... demerits would also be attached.

However ... if you were "in the flow of traffic" that was travelling at 105 kms/hr ... even with a trailer ... it would have been unlikely for you to be stopped.

As a tax-payer of this country ... thank-you for your kind donation ...

It is - for keeping your bike that is...more than +40k and you're walking for a month I think it is....

28 days ... and the walking starts immediately ... unless the kind-hearted cop allows (in his descretionary powers) you to ride the bike directly home.

The courts however may extend this walk ... a few more months ...

I love it when they start the 4km/hr over scam, I find a trap then loop around and hold traffic up doing 40km/hr under the limit, at first the traffic behind me hate me, but once through the trap and I do the limit they are gratefull:lol: Then when I'm bored with that trap, I drive through with my radar zapper, and job done.

Making them follow you at 10km/hr must raise their blood pressure...and the ones that don't notice the 'trap' will hate you forever.

Still, a man has to have a hobby eh...;)

No.

They'll take everybodys licence off them and bull-doze up every metre of road in NZ into oblivion.

That might lower the road toll - and nobody will get a speeding ticket ever again.

A win-win eh!:2thumbsup

Looks like the road toll is out of control. I guess it's about time they acknowledged that the reduction of the tolerance to 4km/h isn't effective.
However, in looking for something else that might work, this is well welcomed

Given that the 4km tolerance has recieved fairly high coverage, add to that the fact that most car speedos read anything up to 10% slow, the people who pay any attention to speed limits are going to be driving on the low side of 90 anyway. Throw in an impatient person to try a risky overtaking manoeuver, and we're seeing the result.

I cannot find the source, but I read some time ago one US state removed the open highway speed limit (and yes, their highways are far superior to NZ goat tracks) and they found the median speed increased only a small degree, as people only went as fast as they felt comfortable with. No doubt there were some who went for the land speed record, but they would have done that anyway, regardless of limits.

Yep, good thing they've ignored drink driving, overtaking on blind bends, crossing yellow lines while passing cars and other lesser driving offences to focus on speed - imagine how many more might have died if they hadn't done that!

Having said that, I managed to do about 1,000km cruising the east and central South Island over the last four days, never got a speeding ticket - what's with that??

I did say 'cruisng'!

And it was in a hot-rod capable of well in excess of 230kph..

And there were times when we weren't cruising but elbow-bending etc instead, hence the low km/day ratio!

Have a Belltronics RX65 and got the heads up half a dozen times on the expressway today. The last time, I was heading south towards Ohinewai / Tahuna junction when I picked up signal from Highway Patrol in the usual spot hiding on the onramp ahead. A guy in a Pajero passed me doing at least 120-130 going under the bridge. Detector was going nuts all the way till over the crest at the end of the expressway so I can only assume the Pajero was speed checked at at least 20 kph over the limit.

Maybe his shift was ending and he'd already hit his quota? Oops, I mean "Performance Target" Or maybe he was just sick of standing in the rain giving out tickets?

Whatever the reason, seems pretty inconsistent with what's in the media

"New Zealand is set for its lowest annual toll of road deaths since 1952 - the last year in which fewer than 300 people were killed in vehicle crashes...

Despite a grim holiday road toll of 11 (15 now :( ) deaths so far since Christmas Eve, the annual figure stood last night at 280 people killed, with just two days left of the year...
