View Full Version : Auckland: Cancer Society Ride Relay Saturday 3 March 2012
Maha
23rd December 2011, 14:50
Date: Saturday March 3rd 2012.
YES ON MOTORBIKES.
I want your help in making this event happen and to be successful.
Some of you will know, Tony Mills (ynot slow) is dealing with Terminal Cancer at the moment.
He is the inspiration behind this Ride Relay. (non stop)
Tony knows about this ride, the Cancer Society know about this ride, they are both are really happy to help in anyway they can.
March 3rd 2012. Is the date that the Cancer Society will be holding a 24 hr walk/run relay on the North Shore to raise money. (Nationally on other dates)
http://www.relayforlife.org.nz/event/event?EventID=128
A group of us will have a team entered in that event on the day.
A Baton Ride Relay will commence from Wellington to the North Shore at the Millennium Institute of Sport & Health Antares Place Mairangi Bay Auckland ...(not asking for any fund raising) on the date mentioned. Saturday March 3rd 2012.
Start time 7am
PM’s were sent out last night to twelve people who I would like to be the Baton Buddy’s
The response so far from those pm's have been amazing..
Each and everyone of you can ride as much or as little as you want on the day.
Paul (Paul in NZ) will kick things off from Wellington.
The Batons will split at Sanson, one heading North West to the Taranaki.
The other will head East to Palmerston North and onto the Hawkes Bay.
We will get the batons to you.
All official in accordance with the Cancer Society. They are behind this 100%
Something Maureen Miller from The Cancer Society said in her email.
''My Dad was a motorbike enthusiast, in his later years he used to ride down on his old Matchie to the vintage get together in Pukekohe. Think one of his biggest thrills was when he got to ride the Isle of Man TT circuit on the back of a distant cousins BMW. As a child I got to know places like Cust and Wanganui well''
She is over the moon with the idea of this ride.
Remember, this ride is something we can all do for Tony.
More info will be added when I think of it.
Any question? Feel free to ask, if I can answer them, I will.
Mark.

Baton Carriers.
*Closer to the time, make sure you have a contact number of the baton receiver ahead of you.*
Paul (Paul in NZ) - Wellington
Al (86GSXR) - Pamerston North
Barry (DogsnBikes) - Wanganui
John (MSTRS) - Napier
Steve (Katman) - Taupo
Marty (Martybabe) - New Plymouth
Kerry (kb_SF1) - Hamilton
Alan (Gremlin) - Everywhere...I can support the guys on the day, for the entire trip.
John (NZ Sarge) - Danniverke
Bill (Sinfull) - Horowhenua
*THE BATONS*
A couple of members have had the same idea about the Batons and I will leave that up to them to sort out.
More on that in the New Year...:msn-wink:
Those that carry the Baton will decide the route they will take to get the Baton to the next carrier.
Also, keep in touch with the person ahead that they are handing it over to (via text/call etc)
The person ahead will need to know an estimated time of arrival, and place for the hand over.
The hand over point can be appointed by the person ahead.

My Suzuki not a bike but the Bears would be keen to be a part of it if we can tag along either in the Kizashi or the MX5 for a bit. We'll keep in touch and see how things develop between now and then. Do pass on to Tony our love and concern. It was nice to meet him when he visited with you!

Dead keen as well. I've let slofox know and I'll have a talk to our boss and some others at the company (http://www.novahealth.co.nz) and see if we can get a decent group. This is so what we're in too. In fact, I'd be bloody disappointed if we couldn't get at least 4 bikes from work alone.

What an awesome idea, huge respect to you Mark and Anne and to all others who will be involved.
I've just dropped the man himself at his Mum's, a lovely lady, in Wanga's and I'd like to pay tribute to Tony and the incredible attitude he is displaying toward this latest and cruelest turn of events. His strength and courage are nothing short of amazing and his sense of humour is in fine flight. This is the strength that has taken him this far and which will ensure he will never be beaten.
Total respect to you Tony

Ok, on motorbikes :P
Can you also explain what you would like us to do - I imagine we can ride with the baton holders for some of the way?
What else can we do?
(I've read through the site and your post and its not entirely clear to me what is going on... add to that a 3 week old baby and no sleep and you see my problem)

The fine tuning has yet to be attended to...I know what I want to happen but I have not heard from all those that I have pm about it so until then...what you read is the nutshell version...I only came up with the idea yesterday so I beleive I have done pretty well thus far.
In good time, the detailed version shall emerge.:2thumbsup

ok, so if i'm reading this right there are two events.
1) The 24 hour relay at mt smart stadium which mom is organising
2) The relay from welly to auck incorporating a different set or riders operating at the same time.
am I right or am I finally going crazy?

You bastards, bloody hell I am humbled nearly in tears with pride and awe,be neat to travel with the batten and meet the great and some unknown generous, wonderful, kind people,am open to suggestions if this can be done, turn it into a piss trip even lol.
Am amazed, sounds stupid but could someone arrange and keep these threads for me,would love to have a record at my funeral to express my grattitude to you all,my girls would love a momento of my othherside hehe, unsure how this could be done, but the couple of threads started for the ideas for relay and this would be welcomed.
And after speaking with Mom,Maha,MSTRS,Yungatart and 86 GSXR I am lucky to have people like you guys in my life, sadly way to bloody short in cases, but it's the quality of person not the time I cherish.Words really do stump me.And that is really a rare thing,am humbled, proud, priviledged and in awe of the true feelings shown in a short time, merry xmas to all, give your loved ones a hug.
Ann mum says thanks for hug,was plenty to give, hugging peoplel will be the death of me yet,and not even new years eve yet heaps of hugs and kisses lol.

Pleasure is all ours Tony...we are the ones that are have had our lives enriched by the mere fact that you have been in them.
We will be away for a few days...back on Tuesday.
I will give the logistics of this ride some thought while we are away and hopefully, when I get back I will some clear idea of how it will pan out..
Basically....someone takes a bit of wood and rides up/across country and gives it the next bloke....where it/they will finally arrive in Auckland sometime later that day..all in the name of Tony Mills and some arse thing called Cancer:2thumbsup

Baton Carriers:
The batons are now going to be something special...not just a bit of 40mm broom handle.
A couple of members have had the same idea about the Batons and I will leave that up to them to sort out.
More on that in the New year...:niceone:
But...(this part has been added to post #2)
Those that carry the Baton will decide the route they take to get the Baton to the next carrier.
Also, keep in touch with the person ahead that they are handing it over to (via text/call etc)
The person ahead will need to know an estimated time of arrival, and place for the hand over.
The hand over point can be appointed by the person ahead.
Paul (Paul in NZ) will start the day off in Wellington..start time and place TBC but Wellington Motorcycles is sounding good at this early stage.
Paul (and those who are with him) will take the Batons up the coast to Bill (sinful) who will then take them through to Sanson where they will be handed over to Barry (Dogs) and Al (86GSXR)..The two Batons will then go thier seperate ways then, one heading east and one heading west.
The final schedule will be posted in post #2 in the New Year.

...whats humbling about it Tony is, the response.
We have messages from people who want to and will get in and support this (and the walk relay on the North Shore) ...from those that have not even met you.
All to late to show someone what you mean to them once they are gone...to get a chance (and with your blessing) to do it while that person is still around is something most would think about after the fact.
The Cape Ride was part of your bucket list...you have now been there and done that.
I remember coming to find you and to see if you were ok?
You were in your unit...and I think you said ''How can you not be in awe of this place''?
You were just taking a few moments for yourself looking out over Cable bay.
I left ya to soak it all in.

Once you have a route in mind (I presume you want the batons to link up again, probably north of Taupo), let me know which one you want me to follow. I played with routes a couple of times, and they will differ by about 100km, depending on how easily they link up - Te Kuiti probably looks the most likely?

I dont know how far say, Steve (Katman) will want to take it from Taupo, but yeah, Te Kuiti seems most likely.
This is where it will get a tad trickey, linking them up again at around the same time.
Marty and Steve could probably text ahead to whoever is in Te Kuiti
I guess whoever has them last, and will get them to Hamilton, does the same, text ahead...I will most likely be there at this stage.
ckai from Hamiltons LOR's had his finger on it for a moment...will wait and see whats happening in the Waikato area.

Just realised (as ya do at 2am) that I wasn't getting updates from here coz I PM'd Maha with my RSVP and offer of help rather than posted. Anywaaaaaaay, my intention is to ride the whole thing too and keep the baton chaps and chapettes company. Will head south on the 2nd so anyone from Auck or points south heading to Welly is welcome to join me. Then we can turn around and come back!
Looking forward to meeting you Tony - these buggers sure have talked you up! Take care man.

Top effort Braeden, Alan (Gemlin) is also doing the whole ride,he is from Auckland but will probably ride down early in the morning and ride back knowing him. Paul (Paul in NZ) is the one to contact or watch out for on here, he will the start the ride off in Wellington..
Barry (DogsnBikes) is doing the whole ride as well so you can choose which way to go at Sanson where the two Batons will part company.

:bleh: Nup, I'll be coming up from the south after a week and a half riding the South Island, so I'll make sure I'm in Wellington on the Friday night ready for Saturday morning. Looks like there will be 3 of us, so we can choose who goes with which path until the batons re-join.

Thats good, just sussing out jetstar flights, and ensuring my flight gets into downtown brittomart and connecting buses to nth shore.
Then again looked on a rental car relocation site and thought the option of driving a car/campervan to auckland as well, but would mean leaving friday morning or early afternoon.

there is a site that has all the "free" rental car drop offs available, but I cant find it.
Basically you just choose your location and destination and the size car you want, and they tell you when there is one that needs delivering. They pay for gas, ferries, insurance etc.

No.. Saturday Paul, the bigger details I will deal with, the finer details will be left up to the Baton Carriers.
You choose the start point and time and I will add it to post 1.
Then the other Baton Carriers can think about change over times etc.

I've had a bit of a rethink. I've decided that Auck to Welly in one day is a bit far to then turn around and come back. Christchurch to Wellington is an easy one day ride though, so I'm going to move down there prior to the beginning of March and ride in that direction. Guess the flaw in that plan is that I'll have to go back the other way as well, but I'll try not to focus on that for now.
If there's any extra value or exposure to be gained by having the baton do Chch to Welly on the Friday I can organise that. Barry can you pencil me in for a bed on the Friday night please? Cheers!

I don’t think you should over think this mate….
When its all said and done and despite all the squabbling over our minor differences we all have a lot in common. One of the things we all share is a secret fear that we too might have to deal with a similar situation and that we will not be able to cope with it in the same admirable fashion. Despite all the bravado and extravagant risk taking there still exists a healthy fear of our own mortality and an admiration beyond all for someone who can face down this with humility and dignity.
I’ve had a tiny brush with cancer myself. I was lucky, it was found early and all I lost was half a testicle. Unfortunately, partly due to diabetes (type 1) and partly due to bad luck I did pick up a post op infection which made me a sick as I’d ever want to be thanks! But that’s not the point – the point is for a short while I was faced with fear and frankly on a few deep dark nights I fell to bits in a very unpretty fashion. God only knows how you are coping with a certainty rather than just a fear which was what unmanned me. In other words while I have not travelled the road you are on my friend I’ve seen the intersection and that scared the living shit out of me!
Now the temptation is to fell some pressure of expectation from what I’m saying. Ie live up to the role! That’s simply not the case. This is what it is and will be what it will be. Its different for everyone and no matter what happens from here on in you have my respect and admiration – that’s why I’m going to do what is essentially a very small thing in the hope that somehow some kind of show of solidarity makes a difference when nothing else will…
Now – these blimmin batons…..
Hmmmm I’m thinking 500mm long PVC pipe with a closed end and a removable end so messages can be inserted into them. I’ll try and sus a marker pen so the riders can record handover times etc on them. (open to other suggestions as well but remember they need to be light enough to carry and big enough to hold messages)

I'd be inclined to strap it onto the bike... personally prefer not to have stuff on me that can move around. Sling would want to go across your back (plus adjustable, as some are skinny little fellas).
Again tho, if all the carriers that carry it after you, are happy with slings, then no problem!

the problem might be those without packracks, sissybars etc who might have somewhere to strap it..
A bit of webbing fed through 2 D link type things, with a simple clip would work. It could then go something like this:
254871
That would go on your back like a backpack and not move around.. and it would be cheap - a coupla bux for the clips for the webbing, coupla D things or loops of some kind, some glue and a coupla bux for the webbing.. all available from yer local "emporium" type place..

Saw there had been no posts for a cuppla days so I decided to take some action. I needed to have something to post though, so I have decided not to move to Chch after all. More accurately I have done a bit of sorting and now I don't HAVE to move to Chch!:wings:
I'm pretty bloody stoked to be honest. It means the ride on 2nd/3rd will actually be longer now, but then I only have to travel a very short distance to get home afterwards. Also means I can be in Taranaki on the 25th Feb (assuming you still want me there after you actually meet me Tony - prob about a 20% chance :nono:).
The requests/bookings for beds remains the same though. As I'll be riding further I'm sure that cements my place in the princess bed - although if I have to share with Matt I won't shower first and I'll be wearing all my gear with wet weathers over the top for white sauce "protection" :puke:.
Right, I'm off for a ride coz it's stopped raining for about 5 mins. See yous fullas in Taupo.
In all seriousness, I'm actually happy with a rug on the floor that I have to share with the dog. But I'm allergic to cats.

This is coming along nicely, couple of things,my piss up is confirmed at Furlong Motor Inn,Waihi Rd Hawera,on main road opposite the racecourse, starting 7.30-8.00pm on the 25th Feb.
Also it looks like I will have to miss this event:cry:my brilliant brother has decided to buy a van from Levin, and his idea is drive it back to Gore when he fininshes a shut down in the naki 28th Feb,and wants myself and dad to travel the South Island and fly back to New Plymouth after doing West Coast,Haast,Milford areas, this is a dilemma but hope you all agree time with family is paramount to me,and I feel as much as I'd give my left testicle to be at Takapuna,at this moment it looks sadly not happening.Rest assured if things change I'll be there with you.
Still looking to be at Taupo though.

Dunno - largish really. Big enough to roll up messages etc to stick inside it so it would need a removable end cap. 50mm?? I was hoping there would be some kind of std plumbing / gas / water type application that had threaded caps etc.
Fall back is still gluing up some PVC pipe as there are shit loads of fittings etc for that.
I have a couple of ideas that will determine length.
One is getting a couple of maps and laminating them, rolling them up and sticking them inside. The baton carrier marks with pen (provided) the route and adds his/her name, dates / times plus a message. Alternately that could be glued to the actual baton?
Also - people accompaning the baton could write something and stick it inside OR write on the outside like you would with a plaster cast? PVC pipe would be ideal for that.

I will get hold of Abbo our resident plumber at Tomcc Wanganui and see what he has,
and I will get Melissa to ask their mechanical guys if they can frabicate something,
Maybe looking at something like a scroll too fit inside the battern
will let you know

By the way, isnt the Westpac Helo run usually about the same time?
Not sure and this year, dont actually care. This event (well the Relay for life that this is supporting) is all about raising some money for the Cancer Society and supporting a mate on his journey with this life sentence disease called cancer.
...I need to spend time with my family...
Still looking to be at Taupo though.
Tony, this is all about you mate. You have to do what you need to do for yourself and your family. We support you 100% in whatever you need to do. We are simply along side you doing what we can to send you some love and support. We cant BE there, but we sure as shit can be there, if that makes sense at all? I personally will be delighted to see you at Taupo, if you can get there.

That makes perfect sense,I want to be there with you guys just to say one small word "Thanks" and if it happens great. But having a talk to mates, family and wanting to do everything 'now' makes it tough,I just don't know how the body will feel, and also the option of palliative chemo to be utilised or not comes into the equation,if I undertook chemo I have to work round that, but that is a slim probability to be honest.
I still feel a hell of guilt if I can't be there, such is the outpouring of genuine caring, wanting to help others with cancer, and my own thoughts that so many people have organised this event, and letting you all down is playing hard with me.It seems like it's all me,me,me and is both a great feeling and also puts the disease cancer into perspective for many.
Just listening to "The Rock" Lynard Skinards FREE BIRD playing, kind of ironic song and does sum up my feelings with the opening words. If I left here tomorrow would you miss me,man that hits hard, but also means I can be free from this disease.

Another song lyric..INXS
''if I told you, that we could fly...
cos we all have wings..
but some of us dont know why''..
Those words mean...anything is possible, you just to believe that, to make it happen.

On the subject of songs I will post these lyrics up, written for you Tony and I will record it for you, sounds better than it looks haha.
Ride into the sunset,
These wheels move your soul,
Ready to do battle,
Like a soldier in a war,
I remember,
When there were blue skies,
Before the dawn,
I would like to tell you,
That you are never alone.
Memories you left behind,
Legacys that will carry on,
It's been said you can capture 1 million words in a picture,
Can you leave some behind,
I remember,
When there were blue skies,
Before the dawn,
I would like to tell you,
That you are never alone.
Can you look back,
and tell me that you had fun?
Can you tell me you made mistakes,
you learnt and laughed, and cried and loved.
and learnt the meaning of
life.
Because you are a fighter,
You won't give up,
I know it looks hard right now,
but what do doctors know?
So stand up,
Shout it to the world,
Tell us your stories,
About your little girl.
The roads youv'e ridden,
The times youv'e binned,
The beautiful moments,
Where your screaming through the woods,
All I will say to you,
Is that we all care for you,
No matter what you go through,
We will be there for you,
Don't worry about the future,
It's still so far away,
Just live life to the fullest,
Forget about the world,
Just ride until your tyres run,
straight into the rim,
Twist that thottle back,
take one more last grin.
So hold,
your head up high,
The clouds may be rolling in,
But there is sunlight behind that darkness,
Waiting to be let in.

No not at all. We will be walking from about 3pm at the North Shore Venue, the event runs until the next morning so it matters not what time the ride arrives. You guys can stop in and give us some moral support if you like or what ever, which ever. We are away now until the end of the month. Everything will get tightened up once we get back.

There are lots of reasons I signed up for this ride, primarily, Tony is a top man and doesn't deserve this shit. His ride to this point in his life has been hard enough without even more intrusion from this bastard indiscriminate disease. Secondly, I lost my Mom to cancer and sadly and rather poignantly I lost a beautiful young girlfriend of mine to Breast cancer.
I say poignantly because since signing up for 'Tony's' ride, coincidently, the spectre of shit has pointed it's finger once more in the direction of my loved ones. As I write, the Bride and I are awaiting results from her biopsy, urgently requested by the breast screening clinic.
It's a worrying time for sure and unfortunately a common experience for lots of Families across the world every day. I think what I'm trying to say is that I have even more reason (if I didn't have enough already) to throw my heart and sole into this venture, the sooner we stamp out this horrid wrecker of lives and families the better.
I don't profess to be half the Man Tony is, I can't muster the same selflessness and positivity that he relays with his every word. He is inspirational, I'm an ordinary man with ordinary feelings an slightly out of control emotions.
Even if you don't make it to Auckland Tony, I hope you get some comfort from the outpouring of care, love and effort from all these good people, riding and running in your name and for the sake of other sufferers.
If genuine human kindness and compassion were a weapon we'd have blasted this evil cowardly disease to hell for ya mate. Kia kaha my freind.

RIGHT!!!!! Holidays are over and time to get busy (ish)
Times marching on and thus far my whole summer has been spent sitting around on my arse drinking, eating, fishing, farting, picking my nose (and eating it) and generally NOT doing much about a baton... or even two batons. That made me feel uncomfortably uncomfortable and most upsettingly there was no one around me to blame - life can be so unfair!
I did do some thinking about it though and ratted through the scrap bin, the local hardware store and even sent an email to steel and tube (fuckin useless, never bothered to reply, why even have a 'contact us' button). ANYWAY - Every 'design' I came up with ended up as some kind of epically over engineered watertight club suitable for gang fights, whacking Orc's or anchoring a small schooner and was never going to be easy to carry on a motorcycle.
So I had another think (ie I sat around and drank a bit more) and thought a mighty thought.... (Fibre helps) Since this isnt a running race and I have NO intention of handing the 'baton' on while moving, twirling it while leading a parade or conducting an orchestra - then surely there is no need for it to look like an actual 'baton' is there??? I mean why make life difficult by conforming to traditional thinking, refusing to be oppressed mentally by the virtual baton I let my thoughts range far and wide and then...... What I'm thinking is more a weatherproof bag / satchel thingy containing a map of the north island. Each baton holder draws in the route they are taking and writes in their name / bike / date / time plus any messages etc. Other riders can also add messages etc. Hopefully by the time the two maps get to Auckland they will be graffiti'd to - erm - richly inscribed as a lasting memorial to mankinds decency or some such... (cough)
What do you think? (and I've already got the maps)

Yeah well it was laminating the maps that got me into the mess I was in. Once they are laminated they can only be rolled. If you roll them up they spring back out making them a real pia to remove from a tube PLUS the tube has to be as long as the short edge of the map and you end up with a very cumbersome object. Another issue is that you need a very special pen to write on a laminated plastic surface or it all smudges off
This means its a traditional map - sorry :innocent:

I'll ride from hamilton/cambridge sorta zone.. just rode it (at 2am) on monday - took about 1hr 20 from mystery creek to Manurewa.. so, if you pick a time you want to arrive at the stadium, make sure we're leaving the 'Tron at around 2hrs earlier (15 mins for getting people actually on bikes, and stuff..)
Work backwards from there - would be my suggestion.

It depends on number of support riders each carrier has and how many are going all the way to Auckland, and each baton carrier pick's there own route which is going to dictate the time batons pass from one carrier to the next, considering that the relay of life is a 24 hour event,I can't see any problems arriving sometime sunday morning,
Remember there is 2 batons and it would be great for both to meet up outside Auckland and arrive together as a sign of unity really...

I'd work out an expected time for each leg (with each stage controller specifying their route), add a little bit of a buffer (a longer stop on the next handover is never a problem), then factor in a stop time at each place, add it all together, and there ya go.
7am start? yee gads, what have I got myself into  Oh... also, wasn't sure if there was going to be some sort of formal start at Wellington Motorcycles, coz if there was, it would dictate a later start, as they open later... Dunno, thought I saw that somewhere...

everything will fall into place the tricky bit is having the two baton's join back up in Te kuti as one group will be waiting for the other, normally Sanson to NP can be done in around 2 hours as a solo rider Depending on how large the group is that will easily turn into 3-3.5 hours,
Think most of us baton carriers will be in Hawera on the 25th so will be able to nut out minor details then

I actually live in Urenui Barry, 30 mins north of NP. This would be a good place to meet up ( depending on how far north you intend to go). I'd estimate about 2.5hours from Urenui to Te
Kuiti, 3 from NP to Te Kuiti but it can vary hugely. I'd rather do it at a sensible pace, don't want anything to mar this ride and some sections can be a bit tricky if you don't know the road.
It took me 3 and a half hours yesterday, mind you the overturned Tui truck had a lot to do with it :msn-wink:
Happy to meet anywhere from Inglewood north and go as far as .... wherever, any time on the day, just need to know rough arrival time and convenient meet point.
Since I singed up for this incredible tribute to Tony and a two fingered salute to Cancer, the Bride has also fallen victim to this most evil of diseases so I have even more reason to be
there on the day.

Does not take long from Te Kuiti to Hn, the route Mark posted 45/50 minutes as a group.
Thinking of a meeting place in Te Kuiti, outside the railway station or down at the big shearer. The question is parking should not be a problem on a saturday pm, any local go a view?
Looking forward to the ride.

This part of the ride is your brief...
I will get in touch closer to the day and organise a time/place where those of us from up this way can meet up and ride to Te kuiti.
As for the meet place in Te Kuiti? I will have a look in ten days or so when I pass through.

That cafe on the right on the way into town (coming from north) is easy to find with stacks of parking (extra out the back if needed) and good coffee. Bosco from memory?? Sumfin like that... Don't get the Eggs Benedict though - it's shit.

Me neither! I've had EB ranging from great to sensational, but never shit. Until Bosco. Picture a couple of cold poached eggs atop soggy english muffins and cold spinach with a sauce that was closer to the consistency of water than water is. Choc chip cookie was good though to be fair. Imust admit, I did wonder how the little coffee making chap got on in a town full of farmers and rugger blokes. If he's there next weekend you'll see what I mean....

Excellent, Urenui it is then, just got to sort out a rough ETA there and we can compute an arrival time at Te Kuiti. Look forward to meeting you, any idea how many will be coming with you? might be able to source some refreshment and a toilet break thereabouts.

Thanks Tony, it would be great to see you. I know Shafty is keen to catch up with you too. You've touched a lot of people with your plight my friend and sadly you are not alone in your fight against this evil, since signing up for this ride I have discovered a lot of people you and I know are fighting their own battles with this accursed thing<_<.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, I am honoured to be part of this tribute to you, your spirit and a unified two finger salute to Cancer, got a couple of Naki guys onboard so far plus a few from down south so it could be an epic adventure  All the best, Mart. x

I think we probably need to start firming up some of the details. Maha, could you update the second post with links to each section of the ride, thread starters to probably put the specifics of their section in their respective first posts?
I'm probably thinking further ahead than others, as I'm off south 2-3 days after Paeroa, and after that internet access will be slow and intermittent, so I wouldn't mind having the routes pre-done for the GPS, and knowing the timing etc. Will return north to Wellington Friday afternoon ready for Saturday morning.
7am leave time....shall we settle for a 10 hour day?
7pm @ Mirangi Bay?

I could, but I have left the 'route to be taken' up to each baton carrier. I would imagine that the shorest route will be taken.
Taupo to Te kuiti is easy as..Poihipi road through to Whakamaru then the Bennydale road to Te kuiti.
From there we will be going through (I will get back to that, to early to spell Maori names)
Edit: Te Kuiti/Otorohanga/Pirongia/Ngaruawahia/Rangiriri (on the western side of the river)

Maha, do you want the other threads that the guys are starting for individual sections printed for the baton as well as this one? If yes, could you ask them to add a list of all the sub-threads here so I make sure I don't miss any? (Apologies if I'm a bit thick and have missed a really obvious and easy way to do this).
I will do the printing as close as possible to my departure to Welly so I get it all (most likely print/bind on 1st March). Was thinking of dropping a note onto the threads close to the time so anyone can add last minute messages of support if they want to (and go back and edit anything they've said that they don't want to be immortalised in print perhaps). Unless you've got a different idea in mind the thread(s) will be on nice paper and bound.
Finally, my absolute favourite pic from Taupo - what an inspirational and lovely man:

Greetings all.
I will be printing all the Cancer Relay threads this Thursday 2nd March. They will then be all bound together into one book of sorts. I'll take it down to Wellington on Friday and it'll go into the baton for it's journey up the country. It'll then be presented along with the other bits and pieces.
The reason I am telling you all this comes to you in two parts:
1) It mightn't be a bad idea to go through any posts you've made and edit or remove anything you don't want to be permanently recorded. I can't think of anything that actually needs changing, but that's up to you. All that we ask is that you don't go crazy and end up changing the past, so to speak, and ruining the flow of the thing.
2) Please feel free to add any further personal messages of support.
Once again, anything that's still in here on Thursday will go to print, and obviously the opposite is true of anything not added to the thread by then. See most of you Saturday.

We first met you at that party in deepest Manawatu (Aokautere)
Since that party, we have had the pleasure of your company on a few more occasions.
The courage and strength that you have shown has been unbelievable.
Add to that your caring nature and determination, admirable traits indeed my friend.
You can talk the paint off an old tin fence Tony, and that’s the very essence of who you are.
It has been such a pleasure (for a lot of people) to have you around in recent times.
The idea of this ride in your name Tony was a no brainer to be honest.
It did not surprised me one bit, the willingness of those that have known you for however long (be it years or be it months) have offered up their time and commitment for this weekend.
We (your friends) are the ones that have had our lives enriched by the mere fact that you have been a part of it.
Your family has much to be proud of, I can say that with absolute certainty.
Love to you and your family at this time and forever more.

Some days make you really glad you got out of bed. Seems to me to be becoming a more and more frequent occurance since I started kicking around with yous fullas. But just now something has really made my day.
I was at the Glenfield Mall (which should be enough to make you all jealous, but it gets even better!) and went to talk to Kevin at Inkworks to find out how much it was going to sting me for all the printing. I explained a bit about what we were doing and why, a bit about Tony and his situation and what we all think of him, and finally about what I needed doing print wise (roughly 200 pages of black & white and bound). Before I got to the bit about asking for a good price and that I would supply the paper, he jumped in with "Yep, I'm happy to do that for you for free as sponsorship". I just about fell over, as I would have been chuffed with just a good price - especially considering they are a couple running a small business, not some huge outfit that can afford such things without blinking. Also, although I have had one thing printed there months ago he doesn't know me at all. So printing, paper and binding is costing absolutely zero, courtesy of the wonderful Kevin & Belinda van den Berg at Inkworks, Level 3, Glenfield Mall.
If you ever need any printing done (I've had them print my online workshop manual for the CBR) please make an effort to send business their way - and say why. And if you're passing, maybe just stop and say thanks (I have about 486 times already!).

Original Saturday plan was for Hamilton and Auckland riders to meet at Pirongia at 2.30pmish to head to Te Kuiti.
I suppose this remains the same but now sort of conflicts with the Cambridge-Hamilton Toyrun which leaves Cambridge at 11.00am and with both events on the same day means a pretty full day.
Unfortunately I cannot do both so will have to pass on the Baton run. Best wishes to all travelling on the run.
