Thousands of dollars worth of motorbikes, machinery and tools went up in smoke early this morning at a workshop in Palmerston North.

The fire service was called to ANZA Motorcycles on Taonui St about 1am, after reports the shop's workshop was on fire.

Senior station officer Ian King said four fire trucks were sent to the building.

"When we arrived the workshop part of the building was well ablaze,'' he said.

"It was a big one. We're not sure as to the cause at the moment. There's no apparent sign of anything suspicious at this stage.''

It took fire fighters more than five hours to put out the blaze, and a fire truck is still at the scene.

Mr King said machinery, motorbikes and tools were inside the workshop and unable to be recovered.

Motorcycles and equipment in the show room, including Harley-Davidson, Suzuki, Triumph and Honda bikes, had not been damaged.
