Im still on my learner licence but cant help drooling over the bikes that might soon be mine....
Does anyone know if you can legally purchase a larger capacitiy (600cc) bike from a dealer while still on your learners or restricted?

Thanks for any help

No, not yet. Unless you qualify for an exemption, of which Ive only ever heard of one getting through.

I believe that you can legally buy any bike - you just can't ride it on public roads...?

If you have a current N.Z. licence or acceptable photo I.D. you may purchase and change the bike into your name (not ownership these days, it is called a certificate of responsibility)

You will need to be paying with cash, in my experience you will not get hire purchase or the required insurance without holding the correct class of licence, and all of this is legal, riding a bike outside of your licence condition is regardless of whether it is you bike or not:innocent:

Correct, however if you get a 'personal cash loan' from the bank which is not taken out as a loan for purchasing a vehicle, ie say borrowing money to buy a race bike or sorts then you'll be sweet, but like you said noone will insure you :pinch:

Just bide your time my friend! If you prang a big bike on the wrong licence you can kiss any insurance goodbye. If you hit an expensive car you'll be liable for any costs.

Use this time to get yoour experience levels up & research what types of bike you will upgrade to. Even then, one of the first things you should do is get on a BRONZ ride right, ride safe course to better appreciate what the bigger bike can do ( especially with regard to acceleration and braking).

Good Luck!

TRUE ... Legal OWNERSHIP yes ... legal to RIDE it ... NO.

There has been no confirmation of date for the new rules ... if indeed it will happen at all ...

Priority for new law changes elsewhere ... http://tvnz.co.nz/politics-news/maori-party-wants-pension-age-lowered-60-4489031

Depending on the insurance company you use of course ... but it would have conditions attached to any HP agreement. Nominated rider(s) would probably feature in the insurance agreement (aged over 25 ) but insurance costs would be high.

Only a keen insurance rep would even try to put a scheme together ...

On a side note, when i attended a ride right ride safe course in napier the Instructor wheelied his Hayabusa across the carpark, directly toward everyones parked up bikes, put the front down, couldnt stop in time and laid it down between two course attendee's bikes which were lucky to escape any warrantable damage....

Sounds like a good war story to be expanded at the Cold Kiwi......

There isn't anything stopping you from purchasing a larger CC bike from the dealer, however it will be illegal to ride it out of the shop and home. Plus if there is any incident with that bike or to another vehicle the insurance companies will gladly do anything to not pay out in that event since you would be thus riding the bike on the ride with the wrong licence. I personally wouldn't take the risk, as tempting as it is to get a more powerful bike :) Though if LAMs does make its way into NZ then you may find you can get the bike legally. You would probably have your full by that time anyway. HAHA

I did...I bought one of these...http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/motorbikes/motorbikes/sports/auction-419899390.htm from a dealer.
I got a ''mate'' to ride it home for me, but it didn't take me long to ditch the GN in favour of the 600 while still on my restricted.

yeah course you can buy it. But they wont let you test ride, insurance is equally ok but not if you are riding it. I had a 1200cc Buell and had full insurance with no licence back in the day:blink:. It covered it when parked anywhere, in my garage, against theft, fire etc but if I binned it I was on my own:shit:. Finance - nup:no:.

Question though, if you are on a learners have you got much REAL riding experience:confused:? A late model 600, or even a 10 year old 600 are a very quick bike:blink:. Big jump

Private sale, yes. Dealers will not sell you anything bigger than 250cc if you have a Learner's or unless you have an exemption from NZTA, I thought...

I qualified for an exemption, but was restricted to one bike only on a limited list of between 300cc to 650cc bikes, so I had to choose or buy one and then apply for the exemption on that as long as it was on the approved list. With choices and availability limited with many still not ergonomically suitable for me, I've decided to stick to 250cc bikes until my full when I can take my wife as pillion and then get the bigger bike.

I would suggest that you're wrong. In most cases the dealer's only interest in your licence status would relate to test-rides.

You would be amazed at the percentage of Harley Riders who have purchased their machines when on a learner licence.

So they cannot be held liable for selling a bigger bike to a Learner? WTF? That's irresponsible!

Ya think?????????? There's no law against a dealer selling anyone any vehicle. What they then do with that vehicle is entirely their 'RESPONSIBILITY' not the dealers.
For the record any dealer worth their salt will point out that a non licensed buyer is not legally allowed to ride the bike away from the shop.

+1......I rode for over 20 years without a licence had a range of bikes, some from private sales, some from dealers. I now have a licence ......before you ask....:shit:

Even better, the NZTA will be wearing the risk soon.

They are going to put LAMS on the licence label of bikes they think are OK for learners. My BMW K100 is on their system as 100cc. I bet it gets one.

And I bet they don't know the difference between a GSXF600 and a GSXR600 if both are called a GSX600 in their database. Which is of course what a canny importer will be calling them.

Are you talking about the LAM? The amendment act and rule were passed months ago, and takes effect from the 1st of October 2012 for the LAM. I guess they could amend the law and rule to push the date back, but it seems unlikely.

http://www.nzta.govt.nz/resources/rules/driver-licensing-amendment-2011-qa.html

LAMS will come into force on 1 October 2012. This will allow time to develop the assessments and make the necessary changes to the IT systems, and ensure that all the changes to the motorcycle licensing and testing regime come into force as a single package.

+1 to this. The only thing you need to OWN a bike is a photographic i.d. I brought my bike(privately) with a car license. I rung NZTA just too make sure. I just wasnt allowed to ride on the road:shifty:
