or "when your radar detector will drop you into the shit..."
Having a radar detector will not always save your arse kiddies...as the following incident will illustrate.
Heading Souf on SH39 this morning, through Pirongia towards Otorohanga on my morning pootle before heading to the normal incarceration in a small shop for the rest of the day.
Just through Pirongia there is quite a long straight bit of road. I was on this stretch, being my usual law-abiding self sitting bang on 99km/hr (for once). There appears, coming the other way, a nondescript, ubiquitous, dull coloured, late model 6 cylinder car. Which I was ignoring completely after making sure he didn't look as though he was going to lose control and zoom across the road to mow me down. He's about 200 - 300 metres out and suddenly the radar detector goes crazy. Instant bloody on I presume. Had a close look at the car as it passed and sure enough there were a pair of little boxy thingies sitting inside the windscreen on top of the dash - which sure looked like the wee lights they stick in there. Had I been in excess of the posted limit I'da been in deep poo I bet. Which made me glad I'd not been fanging it along there. :innocent:
A radar detector is no substitute for either law-abiding caution or dirty cunning...or maybe a soupcon of both.

...on SH39...
The dirty, rotten bastards used to confine themselves just to the single digit state highways. Now, it's any number of numbers, anytime :sweatdrop
Your god help us if they ever realise that there are lots of roads without numbers allocated for them to ply their evil trade.

Was it not a Holden Commodore with steel wheels?

I have seen one twice recently tucked in a farmers gate entrance just up from the weighbridge heading north from 8 mile junction, crafty little begger :shifty::shifty::shifty:

I passed one t'other day. Generally the officers are in uniform which is a tell tale when in traffic, not much use at warp factor five though. The yellow coat hanging off the drivers seat is a big tell too.

Seen this already... Still, in terms of quantities and odds, it's the main highways where they normally are.
I see it like a race. I try to find more and more back roads to enjoy, before they cotton on, and keep going further off the beaten track to find us. Once I see them on gravel I'll know we've reached the inner circle of hell

They are changing their patrol cars I have heard to BMWs as they are more reliable than the commodores
So that A$%ss BMW drive might be a mufti cop
I suppose if its good enough for the MPs it good enough for the police

Did you not realise that machine what carries your benighted carcase around the countryside has a fully functional secondary design function?

Fukct if I'd attempt to follow me in the gravel...

Not a problem if it is not your vehicle and someone else is paying for the stone chip repairs to bodywork and windscreen.

yep radar detectors work best when your following a fast moving vehice and using them as a radar shield. You still need to be "smarter than the average bear" tho... the best they offer is a warning a cop is in the area and you should slow down... ignore the little pips at your peril. Or they can tell you you have just been done and now its up to you to decide wether the conditions and speed you were doing warrents trying a runner or not... once again at your peril.

Oh, but I most certainly do. Just that carrying a lot more gear and the bike probably weighing 2-3 times an MX bike, my pace is more akin to exploring than a race...
Couple of weekends ago I was exploring Queen Charlotte and Pelorus Sound. Started wishing it was a bit more adventurous than gravel roads cars could drive. Got past Hopewell, oh it got adventurous alright. Being by myself I didn't fancy my odds if I dropped it in the tight stuff, so chickened out  So much for wanting adventure huh

Best of luck to you mate, it's summer, by the time you can see the road again I'll be starting on my first cold beer.

He might've been looking for me - I was coming north yesterday and got behind the usual cars going a good speed, then slow, then fast...so I took them all on that stretch. Of course they sped up,and I was doing 150kph to clean them up...then some bitch sits on my tail doing 120kph until I could put some more cars between us. I didn't want to do 150kph there because I know there were cops about, 120kph would be fine if they had stayed at 100kph....or the 80kph they had been doing not long before.

New plain Highway Patrol cars, as part of a new initiative in January, are going to be Mitsi Lancers and Subaru's. 50 will be spread around the country, so that should be about 4 per police district.

Nothing new here, I've never bothered with a radar detector for that exact reason, that instant on thing is like playing Russian roulette. These days I simply can not be bothered speeding on highways n that, eyes on stalks, head swiveling all about the place, meh <_<
Lucky for me I live waaaay out rural, they are an extinct race out this way, the only time I've ever seen a police car in the valley in 10+ years was when they came out investigating a suicide.

Ha Ha, it wasn't you that pulled that tandem pulled trailer swaying all over the road north of wanganui yesterday arvo was it?, man that HP was more patient than I would have been.

It wasn't a mufti but I had a cop look at me when I took on some gravel on the Coast to Coast a few weekends back. Don't think I was speeding...
Oh, and I was driving back from the 'naki on Boxing day and among the 100's of HP cars was one quite older (probably at least 5 years old) commodore parked on a passing lane - definitely had lights above the dash. Also saw another bronze late model jobbie. There were also empty patrol cars parked on the side of the road in a couple of places (Waverley for one). All the bikes on the road were behaving themselves quite well too - wonder why...
