As per the title.......
For those of you doing the Dusty Butt ride who are staying in Christchurch Thursday night and want to meet up with other DB entrants for a leisurely day ride down to Fairlie register here.
The plan is to meet at the Caltex service station, corner Yaldhurst and Russley roads (near airport) at 0800 for briefing then head away soon after.
Planned route will involve riding up a section of the Waimakariri river recreation area before heading up the Rakaia river thru Glenfalloch Station to Lake Heron Station then on to Mayfield or Mt Sommers for gas and a bite before heading thru the Orari Gorge to Fairlie.
I have spoken to all stations involved and have secured us access but there are tariffs for each station that I will be collecting at the Caltex servo (please bring 2x $10 notes)
The route is reasonably tame and is suitable for two up riding or for loaded up solos.
Because of the numbers of riders entered in the DB this year I may have to limit numbers to 30 odd but will see what sort of response I get back, first in best dressed
Have a safe new years, i'll see you on the 20th
Regards Matt

WHY THE LIMIT , MATT??
Is it because too many bikes might freak the farmers out?
They would apprietiate the $$$$$ ,I,m shure.
Might pay to ring em again & get thier views??
-------AND.-------
Are,nt we doing the same ,going over farms with unlimited No,s. on the DUSTY itself???
Being a farmer myself ,and haveing had rides through my farm in the past,No,s. dont worry me,as long as they all go thru in a fairly short timeframe------say 4 hours.
You deserve a few 'DB,s' for organiseing this.:2thumbsup

Firstly it's not the same as the Dusty as we aren't all riding at our own pace, we will be riding together at the pace of the slowest rider.
I don't really won't to try and keep 40 bikes together in one group, it will take forever. If you remember last year we only had 20bikes and guys were getting lost, going the wrong way, chickening out etc etc
I was told by several people that one of the stations (Lake Heron) wouldn't allow us to go thru their property so was pleasantly surprised to get their nod so I don't won't to push it. I will be giving priority to those of you who are coming from further a field as Canterbury based riders can do this route anytime they see fit after a few phone calls. Again I'll see how the numbers stack up before making any firm numbers cutoff

Yeah, you may have to Matt as there is 6 of us from the land of Jaffa's hoping to join in..... we will be at Methven over night so will join up where Struan is meeting you (assuming we don't get lost or mislaid).
If it is too many please let us know as soon as possible so we can adjust our route to suit.

I'm going to call stations back this week and check their thoughts on larger group, can see numbers possibly blowing out towards 50 odd riders :weird:
I've also decided that if thats the case I think it's best that we break into at least two groups. Think we'll do a fast and slow group, riders can self regulate as the ride goes on. The route will allow the groups to catch up at start of each station and for lunch / petrol stop which at this stage I'm thinking will be at Mt Somers Tavern so will still very much be a cruisy social ride.
I have someone in mind who has done this route before to lead the 2nd group, just waiting to hear back
However the rides still all go and should be a good day out
Cheers Matt :chase:

Right oh fella's,
Numbers issues resolved, Ryan and Transalper did the Glenfalloch / Lake Heron loop on Thursday and had a chat to landowners about our ever increasing numbers. Both were fine with having 50 odd riders through so it's all good.
Just to clarify costs, all three stations ask a $10 tariff per bike so total tariffs for the day will be $30 per bike which I will collect on Friday morning at meeting point. The plan will still be to split into two groups.
I personally haven't done the Glenfalloch loop so are looking forward to it too, total distance between fuel stops shouldn't be anymore than 200km

She only got off and walked for a couple of minutes while I got my :apumpin: workout. :sweatdrop
No picking up of bikes needed though so quite satisfying really. :Punk:

I was thinking about the gear I need to get to Fairlie cause we've got in-laws coming to look after little man and all the T-shirts. Have decided against putting the bike on the rack on the back of the Prado so will be taking a trailer. So if people want us to take panniers or gear bags from Chch to Fairlie on the Friday send me a PM. I live about a km from the Caltex you are departing from.
We are aiming to be in Fairlie around 4pm and would have the bags at the Gladstone from 5pm.

Ha ha, you a bit geographically challenged me thinks, or I could be? but I sincerely doubt this ride goes any where near Ashburton this year.
I'm not going on this one so don't have the full ride plan detail but suspect your best bet will be heading the opposite direction (from Methven away from Ashburton).
I'd expect the answer for you coming from Methven would be something like go to the Rakia Gorge Bridge where the others are meeting.
That's on State Highwauy 77 around S43 31.061 E171 39.429 on the GPS/Google Maps.
The Turn off from SHW77 in to the Glenfalloch adventure bit is at Blackford Rd = S43 31.440 E171 37.227

Hey fellas,
Sounds like there will be approx 10 of you staying near Methven that are meeting us at SH 77/Blackford.
Might pay if you guys meet up somewhere local in Methven so no one gets lost and heads towards Ashburton
I'd suggest outside the Blue pub which is probably the most recognisable spot in town at 09:00
Realistically I can't see us being at Blackford before 09:30 (we are doing 40 odd km's of gravel before there) so who knows what carnage will ensue

Sorry to spring this on you guys but just rang each station as a courtesy to remind them that we are coming and bloody Orari gorge station has decided to slap us with a $5 per bike tariff, never mentioned anything to me the other two times I spoke to them :argh:
Also for thou's of you meeting us at Blackford rd, I think meeting at 0900 is a little early unless you are happy to wait around, realisically speaking I can't see us being there before 0930 and it may be later depending on the group. We are not taking the most direct route from Christchurch, will be doing approx 100km of which 20-30km is on gravel riverside roads

Messing about with old track logs it looks like J does the Intake to Gorge bridge on the KLX125 in about 50 minutes (she never rushes).
A careful rider on a big bike in a dusty group scenario might take up to that long... maybe... worst case(ish) ? No punchers included. :pinch:
Another $5 bummer.
Maybe they been talking to the other station in that section and decided to get in on it too.
I am definitely out from Fridays adventure so see u all at Fairlie. Take care.
