Thanks for that Nordie, so Chris made up 8 minutes on his start position in a 32 minute special stage, be good to see how this progress' once he starts to wind it up. I have to admit to being in awe of the sheer riding endurance required to do a special (although a short one) and then a 700km liaison in one day, I'd be needing a lie down after the first bit, assuming I survived it!

PENALTIES FOR MISSING WAY POINTS
The range of penalties for each missing Way Point (WPV, WPM, WPE, WPS, DZ, FZ, CP) will be indicated on the road book.

Yeah, shame Birchy lost time on last leg, can't find any details why he lost time, either nav error or minor mechanical? Aussie Rod Faggotter had a great stage today, made up some good places.
USA rider Quinn Cody had massive crash caught on film, managed to ride to next checkpoint, but then withdrew from race with broken collarbone and concussion.

Chris (Via Monica) is sending out a daily update email, here's todays.
Day three done and dusted!
Chris arrived at Waypoint 1 in 23rd position, but by the end of the 270km special stage he was at 38th. This has moved him down slightly to 34th overall.
He will still be happy with this as there are still 11 more race days to go and so far has had no major problems which is great.
Darryl finished in 36th today and moved to 35th overall so the two will leave just a minute or so apart tomorrow.
Spoke to Chris he said it was the best day he has had yet, lots of fun, says everyone is still rolling along fine. He went the wrong way just after Waypoint 3, apparently lots of people did!
The Dakar.com ranking page now shows him as 30th.

Ouch !
I had a hell of a crash, a real big s**t mixer! Someone ran into me and off I went. I walked away without a scratch but the bike was quite damaged – the oil cooler was broken. I tried instant metal and that didn’t work. So I had to strip down the bike and bypass the oil cooler and work some Kiwi magic into it. I lost HEAPS of time I know, but it was all fixable and luckily I was fine. Of course I wish it didn’t happen but it’s not the end of the world and I am just going to get on with the rest of the race.

My thoughts too. Been watching Romaniacs, Erzberg etc & then the Dakar. It's like a different sport. I guess it is, 400km's a day or so, flat tack across the unknown. Exceedingly large Cajones required.

Chris made a comment to that effect after stage 8 in his daily email update:
“Well that was 500k’s of pure shi*t, not one good bit!! It was just flat out, like FLAT OUT, dusty as hell with rocks everywhere!! But I made it back in one piece, doing nothing stupid, which seems to be working for me at the moment!! Still really enjoying it. Am I tired? Nope, I’m averaging 7 hours sleep a night [I pointed out that was more than me – Mon].

Always a penalty but they increase the more often you change it. Something like first change: 15 mins, 2nd: 40 mins, 3rd or more: 2 hours.

12th January 2012, 20:19
Someone will correct me if I'm wrong but last year I got the impression the 450 riders were allowed 3 engines for the ride, no penalties, no questions asked. This year I understand changes are allowed but you will get time penalties. 15 mins for first change, 45 for second, 1.5hrs for 3rd . . . . Guess it is to drive reliability into the engine designs an obviously means some interesting race strategy.
Did you fellas realise that the Dakar made national TV sports new (TV1) tonight. Chris is 28th overall after todays stage!
He picked up 8mins on Daryl Curtis but the stage was fairly short.
The 2 Chileans ahead of him seem to have changed engines...

I assume he started 17th, given thats where he finished yesterday's stage (due to navigation errors by others it seems), and he finished 17th too. So no placed gained in the stage but he is riding with others more his pace at this time i.e. faster than the around 30'th placed fellas, probably getting a better run with less dust and less people to pass. Or am I reading too much into this. Hope not.
Opportunity to show true colors, keep moving up the leader board and maybe get a better starting position for 2013?
All in all this is still looking like a very positive race for Birchy.

Looks like he hit WP6 4mins behind the other top guys hitting the finish, which would indicate he's still mobile?

good stuff yet again. Whats the word on the street about Robbies hummer? The frenchies must think hes tellling porkies if all it is is tyre deflators etc. Unless the deflators have turbos or something attached?

Got a bit interested in this show down yesterday. It seems the deflation system is connected to the inlet manifold downstream of the restrictor plate. Rules clearly say all air the engine sucks must pass through the restrictor. Robbies contention is that the amount of air has no effect on performance and that it is just to make the tyres deflate quicker. He also said that the deflation system uses a diaphragm and they need a vacuum to operate it. So which is it Mr Gordon?
All this from the Speed Energy youtube channel with Robbie speaking to the camera. Whatever the case it seems pretty dumb set up and is just asking for a bit of controversy. Especially when the Baja trophy trucks style cars are not the norm so will likely come under a bit of controversy when they started doing well.
Saw another comment that they were filling their tyres with NOS so deflating the tyres directly into the mainfold would give them a nice boost. Given NOS is usually under pressure in a cylinder and therefore the volume dumped into a engine is pretty large I can't see sucking a few litres from tyres in a likely pretty uncontrolled manner being much use. Besides one piddly shot of NOS doesn't account for the significant speed they manage to pull all stage long.
By the way they were claiming to do 130 miles and hour down the big dunes into Iquique on stage 9.

That ruling for the Hummers is bollocks. I like the Hummers, the hummers are cool. Minis are ghey.
To put it in perspective, if you have a vehicle with a 350ci chevy or therabouts and you have one of them big bugcatcher/letterbox scoops sticking out the bonnet facing forwards, the vehicle will need to do inxs of 300km/hr before there is any supercharging(boost) effect. So some air from a few tyres occaisionally is not going to give him an advantage. The air is probarbly hotter than ambient too.
Bollocks rule.

Hummers a ghey :bleh: Merican motors are seriously over sized (ci) for the hp and torques they put out. There's nothing clever about it.
Mini's are also ghey cause they are just the X5's from last year with a different shell.
The Imperial Toyota Overdrive Hilux is the only interesting vehicle and as per de Villiers style he's getting on with it quietly, he's 3rd and he's still beating the hummers. That V8 does sound cool. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RV5hRZjnQmM&feature=related.
Does any body have any good footage of the trucks? Missing the trucks this year cause SBS isn't showing vids on web this year. I'll show my true colours - for me it would be a close thing to choose between driving a truck and riding a bike in the dakar.

The Humbuggy is breathing through a 38mm straw to feed that 6L V8. Which explains why it has to take a while to get up a head of steam...
Also, Luis on the KTM 150 is out with a broken wrist :(

They are running to the 2013 regulations as well which put bigger restrictions on the air intakes. That will make them more competitive for the win next year, if only VW came back as well.
