View Full Version : Broke my specs!

Pissed me right off as I am blinder than a blind thing without them. Big day in front of the screen today encouraged me to put my hands up the side of my face and rub my temples (as you do). I must have placed undue stress (not even au!) on the frames and "ping" specs are in two pieces and I am rendered blind! Snapped the bridge clean off one side.
My every helpful boss provided a pair of $2 specials from her top drawer which have left me with a very odd headache and eyes that are very strained, but at least I could stay at work. I do have a pair of "sort of repaired, broken old" glasses at home that I can make do with for a day or so and as long as the super glue does not let go I should be ok while mine are repaired/replaced.
Now I have a question for you spectacle wearers.
How has your experience of spec savers been? I have some seriously mixed reviews. Used to be fantastic, now crap. Utter crap etc... I dont want an eye exam, I just want specs. Yes, I probably should pay for an eye exam, but prescription is about topped out for old eyes, so wont hurt to just refill.
So, Spec Savers?

Current specs about $700. One pair, about 2 years old, already had to replace the nose rests, apparently have a wanky frame that only certain shops can adjust. I have an interview lense...

Everyone I know who has used them says they are excellent.
Personally, I just go to the $2 shop and buy a few pairs.
I get the ones you can easily pop the lenses out from so that I can mix and match prescriptions for each eye.
Should've gone to SpecSavers

I would be a starter for them too, but as an optician pointed out to me ages ago, I have a bit of brain damage. My brain over rides what my eyes see, or something like that. I cant use the $2 shop things is the bottom line. I also weaqr them almost all day every day at work.

and pretty happy with the result. However, if you want to go even cheaper, https://www.facebook.com/ClearlyContacts.co.nz These guys make spec savers look expensive. As long as you have all the relevant prescription info, you can order them online with your choice of frames and they usually arrive via Fedex in a few days. Haven't got them myself yet but have talked to several people who have and they are rapt.

They do glasses too. Just saying, if you're considering specsavers, this website provides the same service just without a shop and half the price for a pair of specs.

Fuck me! Exam x 2, One pair of spex with super duper progressive lenses, in a Ray Ban specs frame, WITH a discount, a grand, plus another set of prescription sunnies "half price" at $500 (this in the two weeks before Crimble.... havent had the VISA bill yet) :(
I looked hard at SpecSavers (when I got the quotes for what mine would cost) but I didnt like any of the frames they had, and I looked at a bunch. I'm an utter label whore though. Ray Ban FTW.
I also LOATHE that greasy fucker that fronts their ads. Some gay Strayan with waaaaay too much fake tan. Alan something. ICK.
I know someone who bought spex online. Out of Singapore IIRC. Very happy, super cheap, and quick. I wasnt brave enough, plus I thought they might fuck up my progressive lenses.
Short answer: OPSM expensive but great service and labels you know (and yes I know they all come out of the same Chines factory and what I paid $250 for cost $2.50 to make. I'm OK with that.) Specsavers: probably get as good an eye exam but didnt like the frames.

Hi Anne
I have used Spec Savers and was not at all impressed with the quality of the lenses.
The frames are fine and they are a good price compared with other optometrists.
The last lenses that I had replaced I went back to my normal optom - Visique - and I am much happier with them.
The good thing about Spec Savers is that they have created a bit of competition in what was a very non competitve industry.

Went to spec savers yesterday - 2 pair of specs for $229.00, which included the examination fee of $60.
This is for 2 pair of single focus lenses - one for normal "distance" use, and a second prescription for computer/reading.
My previous specs are progressives, and I just don't like them. They were also from specsavers, and cost $799, which included a second pair of single focus prescription sunglasses. Overall I was happy with specsavers (hence the reason I went back), but once you add the "extras" such as tinting, lens thinning and antireflective coatings (amongst other options) the price can balloon quite drastically.
Haven't had a problem with lens quality at all - they're pentax lenses, which is a fairly well known and respected brand name.

Hey four eyes, good luck with that :msn-wink:
Every optomertrist I have been to has always insisted on giving me an eye exam, whether I have script or not. :tugger: I save heaps at Clearly Contacts.....they have a promo on at the moment for four eyed people too....free pair me thinks. Special conditions apply of course. But then that sounds like a bit of you :dodge:

Cheap is a cheap does. If you're only interested in cheap as chips corrective eyewear, then the Internet is your friend. If you actually care about what condition your eyes are in, then a proper eye exam (not just a refraction) done regularly makes a whole lot of sense. Even more so if you have a family history of things like glaucoma or your granny going blind at a young age.
Some eyewear chains aren't as cheap as their promotions would have you believe. By the time they do their upselling, you've probably paid as much at the "cheap" store as you have anywhere else.

When I went to get min, they were around 500$ for the whole lot. 200$ for the frame another 200$ or so for the lenses and another 120$ for transitions. :niceone:
There nice and they fit well, but the paint on the frame is flaking off. Not a big deal though, my hair covers where all the peeling is
I got them from whatever Visique is called after they got taken over.

So, the old frames are to be retired  Not even Maha tape can fux them.
I have elected to go with the full eye exam and new frames/lenses. I have no doubt my insurance company will ban me from replacing anymore specs :(
They can make an attempt at soldering the old frames back together apparently, whether they stay together is another story. Lets hope I make a more robust choice this time. Two years seems such a short time to render quite expensive frames redundant. I only wear them for reading/computer work, so not full time at all. I thought the ones I chose were titanium wonders, turns out they were titanium weaks...

Stupid is as stupid does. If you pay $90 dollars for a 3 pack of contact lenses from the Optomertrist, when you can buy a 6 pack for the same price. And guess what?... IT'S THE SAME PRODUCT TOO!!!
And I agree, if you care about the condition of your eyes, a regular and proper eye examination is essential. But every time you require the services of an optomertrist? I think not!!
"Hi, I need a new pair of glasses, my others broke"
"Sure, we can help you with that, we will just need to give you an eye exam first. The Optomertrist will be with you in 5"
"Hi, I would like to re-order some contacts please"

It's a Retail Management tool that a lot of retailers around NZ have taken on-board. They have a big fat manual on how you train your staff to approach, sell, on-sell, up-sell, and retain customers. Of course it goes deeper than just that. But the outcome is usually miss-interpretation and delivery of those "tools/skills" resulting in a lot of pissed off customers.

Hi hunny. Sorry to hear about your head swelling up & exploding your vision devices.
I have private health insurance which gives me up to 3 pr of script goggles per year. One for a friend if I want. Got new script on 31 Dec (living on the edge :headbang: ) So now can get another 3 pr today if I wanted. After paying so much for Insur, I want to get something 'free' from them.
I only use for some reading & picking splinters out of my knees. I have pairs for every situ now because my transitional pr make me nauseous
You'd think something as fundimental as lets say... SEEING would be better funded by the government. Is the same here. :tugger:
Well good luck chicky. I'll ask at the eye shop if I can get 'old' lenses put in new frames under my cover. Happy to try for you lovely lady
PS I went with SpecSavers this time. Picking them up today. 5 day turn around, not bad. OPSM good too.

0800 contacts. ( I will check the address later), EVEN better than coastal, online im chat, good call centre, ( set up my account for me easy as),
send me an email when my contacts are due to expire, click email an I reorder its that simple
5 days later, on my doorstep.
u can set the reorder length of time
and as cheap or if not cheaper than anyone else
certainly better than both nz or japan
japan,,, couldn't supply, nz wouldn't supply without eye test
america one click done .....

I go to Specsavers in the Glenfield Mall. There is an english guy there who is great (and rides motorbikes). For the single lense (no bifocals or progressive lense) you can get great deals. I paid $285 for 2 pairs of glasses. I am really anal about having spares, and as my eyes haven't changed for years, there are spare glasses in the car, the bike pannier, everywhere! I have astigmatism so I can't go to the warehouse or $2 shop.

Snap! I have a progressive lense in my glasses so that ensures that they are never going to be super cheap. I am going to get my prescription and see what that web based firm can do. I dont have spares for my glasses and am really struggling, I am using a pair that are many, many years old, I have one temple super glued on to the frames and the join is flimsy to say the least

I got fed up with wearing glasses to do everything so I had laser correction surgery. Had one eye only done and have coped well with that for six months, but will be getting the other eye done in a few months. Great to be able to thread a needle, read stuff on packs in supermarkets, look up phone numbers, read the paper, etc without having to put on glasses.
I had progressive lenses as I'm far-sighted and have astigmatism. With only one eye corrected my distance vision isn't as good as before, and there is also a gap in the intermediate distance vision, which is why I'm getting the other eye done.
It seems expensive when you first look at it ($3000 per eye) but when you factor in new glasses every few years and new sunglasses too if you do a lot outside (I had Convertibles - they have magnetic clip-on tinted lenses so I didn't need sunnies as well), it doesn't take long to pay for it. I'll carry on having the eye exams every few years but not having to wear glasses to read a recipe or send a text is fantastic! No big dents at the top of my nose from glasses (even light frames and plastic lenses) either.

My vision cant be corrected by laser. I dont mind wearing specs for reading, I have to wear them almost full time now though.

The decision...
Paid good money, well spent, for a complete, professional eye exam. Turns out I have a rinkin developing, who knows how long before it affects my sight though. I have chosen a pair of like for like frames, and will get my almost no different prescription put in them (they actually improved ) I will claim on my insurance.
So for the cost of an eye exam plus an excess I will have new specs I can read with. Will return after my holidays to get something else checked out in maraetai, and pay a further $40 for that test, I will also be getting my prescription so I can invest in some "cheap" spare specs :sunny:

Hmmm, only two years. not really good enough eh, considering the price that you pay for them. My frames are about 5 years old, showing signs of wear now ( the colour has come off)
Make sure that when you take them off, you are using two hands! Especially important when you are doing the glasses on/glasses off thing more than once a day!
