I don't want to get into an argument over this..... but I feel from looking at the flies and the clutter and the fact that the birds live their whole life in a small enclosure not even big enough for them to spread their wings, constantly pecking each other and suffering the consequent wounds from the pecking/fighting that they are in some discomfort.

However someone may argue that since these birds are bred in captivity and have not ever known any other living conditions they may have adapted to their life......

So either way I dunno......

I only paid $3 each for the 4 chooks I got from the place in Pauatahanui (Wellington). They free range round our section during the day and have a purpose built enclosure for at night. We get usually 3 eggs per day (one of the chooks is menopausal). Riffer and his son came round one day and (son) said they were the first chooks that he'd ever seen which didn't come out of the freezer.

1. Dumb question of the year. Why would chickens be different than people, animals and other birds that clearly feel pain. Do you have to hurt every human to conclude that humans feel pain?
2.Yes , I've talked to them but not the brightest of conversations. I got the impression from them that given the choice they (chickens) would not deliberately inflict unnecessary suffering on humans, which is what battery farms do.
3.Who cares? Me for one I buy free range or spca approved barn laid because I like animals and grew up with 24 chooks to feed every day as a kid.

Going inside those things was quite a scary experience, all these things screaming their heads off, seemingly absolutely farkin terrified, only living to munch on their steroids, all of them look like they've been to hell and are just visiting for a while.

I'm told though, that they're actually much happier in there than being free range. The story goes that, as free range chickens. they have to be fed exactly the right amount of food, else they start pecking each other and going nuts and their lives turn to shit...there was a bit more to it which I can't recally exactly.

Please note that, even with the extra details, in light of the source's circumstances, and from what I saw with my own eyes, I consider the above a load of horseshit.

when we got 8 chooks from the battery farm we brought them home in a couple of boxes and when we let them out they just fell over from not being able to stretch legs in their old home.
its cool to see them do well on a true free range area.
ours took ages to grow there feathers fully and they took about weeks before they stared laying. ( they had stopped laying when we got them)
we feed them heaps of colostrum from the cows and they done real well on that.

Yeah, it's pretty hard to believe, especially after seeing the state of each of them. The argument supposedly has medical backing, and there were some stats thrown in, but this came from the mouths of a battery farming family, and obviously no one wants to feel like a sinner.
