View Full Version : Are motorcycle dealers still having a tough time?

So If you really want a new bike, you can walk into a dealership and tick up a bike, as long as you meet the lending criteria, but the lending criteria, and APR are still pretty steep, which leads me to believe they arnt doing to bad.

I was in england 12 years ago, and suzuki dealerships had a ZERO APR on new bikes, what a deal.

We're having a tough time of a very different sort at the mo. We're quickly running out of bikes to sell!

Everyone is buying them without a trade.

We need bikes now!!!

Obviously there will be reasons and decisions that wont be 'public domain' but if a dealer that was supposed to be Yamaha's No1 sales shop has closed it's doors (waikato yamaha), then there must be something going on in certain areas at least.
I guess it will be the small local dealers you'll see go first, just like many small local garages have gone in urban areas.

As much as we expect bike sales to be the 'bread and butter' I would guess a fair amount of turnover would have to come from ancilaries and clothing sales. The crop of online stores in tardme etc must be having an effect at some level. I know of one online store that refused to suppy an item trade to my local dealer, with the comment "we are out to close down dealers like you, if they want an item we can provide, they'll have to buy it from us"... Well thats an interesting attitude, they could supply wholesale to a shop and get greater turnover?? However more interestingly to me is the idea that they want to close dealers down... So when My bike needs a repair WOF, new tyre fitted? I e-mail them, and it gets fixed over the internet?
There will be dealers without a doubt, but it will be 'interesting' to see what will happen in the next year or two.

Actually, it's the workshop that generally keeps the doors open. Without one, or without it functioning well, there's little chance the shop will survive.

Often small margins in bike sales.

Interesting, we're having no issues with sales or gaining top quality stock.

Sales are a bit quiet here in ChCh as well. One factor in not being able to get top quality stock is the change in import laws. We've stocked up as much as possible (larger yard with 280+ cars on the books) but it's going to get tougher soon.

Understood, our stock is made up of 90% new, 10% pre-loved so the new laws aren't affecting us.
It also helps that I can sell out of other yards too (Sime Darby)

in the 1st question, yes it is still hard out there, very hard on the road bike dealers especially, but the good ones are still going alright, been another round of shop closures and receiverships as well, Euro and US bikes are doing better than most due to a good exchange rate for their importers, where the yen is still very strong hurting the jap bikes, (why the pricing between the two is much closer than it has ever been), the latest new rego figures which i saw (from november) shows the new rego's down to nearly a quarter of what they were for the same month in 08.

as for your question on teh finance, the dealers, or the distributors pay the finance rate for those 0% deals, and after the credit crunch it has been much harder to get the finance companies to do these deals,

And there's a lot less finance companies around.

What product are you selling? I'm having no problems with sales or with sourcing grade 4 or 4.5 product locally or ex Japan.
Slowish week this week with nicer weather and school hols but still up a couple or three on this time last year

We are New mitsubishi and used, We try and stay away from imports and no longer use a importer as the prices for the japan imports got out of control.

We have had a great week, i sold 7 on saturday (which is a pb for me in keeping in mind im in Dunedin),

Well heres ya figures....

on road sales are taken from registration figures and split into catagories

Off road sales are taken by surveying importers and distributors

255280255281255282255283255284

don't know how accurate all this is though because last year FORZA sold 416 bikes in NZ and they are not even mentioned despite having been in the market for 6 years now...

If total off road 2 wheeler sales was 6536 and Forza sold 416 bikes what percentage is that?
