DVD playing software & codecs?

This is a "new" computer for me, and I was sure it played DVD movies just fine.

However, during an update of the software on it (and uninstall of stuff I don't use), the DVD movies don't play right anymore.

As I don't watch DVDs often (despite having hundreds of them) I've never bothered with fixing the problem.

However for Xmas I was given a James Dean movie "Rebel Without A Cause" and I'd like to watch it on my computer.

The DVDs play, but the audio and video are now jumpy and not watchable because of it.

Any ideas? I've tried GOM Player, VLC, Media Player Classic. Not sure which codecs I have.

Right, I've installed the DivX codec pack and rebooted

I attempted to play the DVD using Windows Media Player and got a message along the lines of "There is an error with digital copy protection between your DVD drive and software. Try downloading the latest updates for your video card"

So I've gone to ATI and found the "newest" ones and installed them with no problem. I rebooted.

I have no tried WMP again, and got the same error. GOM player crashes same as before. VLC will play it, but it's still got the jumpy stuttery image and sound.

Any ideas?

Is it only the 1 movie that's giving you issues, or other ones as well?

But...

On a hunch, I installed "Asus DVD" onto this desktop, which came with my Asus laptop I recently bought. I had a suspicion it was an Asus branded version of Power DVD, and I've seen and used Dell DVD before.

Dell DVD however checks you are installing on a Dell. Asus DVD doesnt.

And I can now watch the DVD (in stereo only though, but I've got the surround sound disconnected anyway)

That's possible... I'd suggest also trying on a friend's machine.

Surprised that VLC couldn't deal with it. You have to have some really odd stuff for VLC not to play it now, and no codecs required.

Wot 'e said. I've always found VLC to be bombproof.
