and the council should erect a bronze statue to him sitting on the corner.
But why the govt and why not a collection from his 'supporters'?

Tax payers dollars spent on a funeral for someone who likely hasn't paid any tax?
I don't think so!

Why is it news when a homeless guy dies ? :weird:
I woulda thought this was pretty news-worthy.....
6 months preparation, 1 trip to Namibia, 15 days, 13 stages, 2 crashes and a whole lot of determination... worth it, as Chris Birch finished his first Dakar Rally today!
He is pretty stoked, a bit sore, heading for bath and beer, but very happy to have finished.
Chris did fantastically well and despite a crash that took him an hour to fix his bike, and another crash so close to the finish that knocked him out and left him rather dazed and injured, he pushed and pushed, skulled back a cup of concrete and finished in 27th overall.
From 178 starters there were only 98 finishers in the bike category - a 50% finishing rate.
Well done Chris!

Because he was a bit of a Wellington icon. Everyone who works or spends any significant amount of time in the CBD will have seen, and recognised, him on a fairly regular basis. Whether you thought he was harmless or disgusting there's no denying that he was one very distinctive homeless guy.

His most serious conviction - under the name Terrence Kingi - was from April 3, 1979, when he was found guilty of driving with excess breath alcohol causing death.
Details are sketchy about the fatal crash, which happened in the Whanganui area. It is understood that the person killed was his best friend.

He was a drugged up; drunken, sexo. Abusive to most unless he wanted something. Was violent at times and was an eye sore and embarrassment to Wellington. In fact was he a member of KB?
Sad he died, but shit happens when you allow it too. Wellington has one less threat to society.
If they put a statue up there better enough bronze for the next dead beat that kicks their heels.
I read some of the pinko lefty, trendy, tye died, jandle wearing, hairy legged, long haired friends of Jesus, hand wringing fuckers comments on stuff and if they want to cough up to plant Hanna in the ground then they are more than welcome to pay the bill. If they wanted to put up a statue to a homeless guy what about the one that used to wander around with a swag and a yellow plastic bucket, at least he kept himself clean and tidy and was polite. Wonder if the Museum Hotel still have the paintings of him? But he was just as much an "icon" of the Wellington Homeless in his day. But why celebrate those the chose to drop out of society, isn't that a contradiction and therefore insult?
Some how I can't imagine Blanket Man having many friends amongst the "friends of Jesus" group although he would have supporters amongst christian social worker groups I guess.

Margaret the K road 'icon' died last year, in the local papers, everyone hailing her as something wonderful
She always was begging yet had money and a nice place to live
I remember back 44 years ago and she(he?) was there! I was with my mum shopping at george courts and as a 5 year old I stared at Margarets presence, she yelled abuse at me! A 5 year old kid holding his mums skirt....
I cant stand the way people talk up mentally ill, addicted street people flaunting their worries and throwing their pain and suffering in your face
Imagine the years of circular destructive thoughts passing around his addled brain...
okay just cause life isnt fair, and the world is run by pricks, dont mean you cant ask for help to patch things up with family and seek help to start a better life. He would still be alive and healthier!
Retard or not, rest in peace. That spell he had in the mental health unit at Xmas time must have been helpful!! not

No. The public toilets were 50 metres away and his legs actually worked. And did I know BM? Not at all. But when he first arrived I used to say gidday and give him packets of Dunhill Red ciggies and throw him the odd $20.00 bill so he could eat. Probably more than Gareth has ever done I'd say. It's when I saw him pull out his cock and piss down his own leg at 5.45pm mid summer in front of women and children doing their x-mas shopping that that stopped. Then after having personally seen him jerking himself off in front of young children I decided that he was indeed total trash and should be treated as such.
How 'bout you Mr expert? Had much to do with him? Lived withing 50m of him for the last ten years? Sat with him...chatted with him? How 'bout Gareth Morgan? Do you know him too? I certainly do. I've known GM for 18 odd years and spoken to him a lot as well. The whole paying for BM's funeral is nothing but a 'look at me look at me' excercise.
I'd say you simply think it's cool to be all shook up and upset becuase it's seen as the cool and trendy thing to do. But I'd say you know nothing about BM or what he was actually like to live near.

It's sad when anyone dies, like 'em or not. Maybe that's just me. The family can't afford to bury him, so Morgan has stumped up the cash, good on the guy. So I'll jump on the bandwagon and make myself feel better about myself because I care . I have lived near him for the past 2 years and while he used to annoy me (see above reasons) I am a little saddened by his death - I am glad he is off the street but didn't want him to be because of his death.
Death is rather sad, but also because his state of mind ultimately lead to his death
I guess we will never really know the full story on why he was there but he did strike me as someone with a lot of issues and for that to lead to death, is sad
Not to say I'm going to contribute to his shrine or his funeral, or that he was an up-standing citizen worthy of a countries respect. Doesn't mean it isn't a little sad

Hardly a role model, hardly a father to his children. Seems as if he is being glorified just for being highly visible and for being a character
What about all the unseen good men, working hard and quietly raising their kids.
In context it kind of sticks in their throats a bit?
The cult of personality? I knew him too.... we spoke of suffering....he was a great guy....
Eulogies are seldom correct.
Guy reminds me of a preacher ministering emotional blackmail to others to do better in life. Then does little with their own life, all the while with a holier than thou attitude

Ach, we pay the council for removing graffiti. I would rather GM funded a mural for the guy, perhaps a fully functional wax work :shifty:. The main "problem" I have with it, is that a guy wanted to live on the street, and because he did so and lived in what is seen as an "unclean" way, be it for mental or "political" reasons, the "problem" is that he was treated differently. That's the bit I don't like. If he didn't "want" or "need" help, he shoulda had meals on wheels and have, and had many of his needs met, including a smoke or two to while away his days and noone would have known any differently.
I think he was 'treated differently' because he sat in his own piss and shit (in a public place) and wanked in public.

"After much public grieving over the death of Blanket Man, and since Wellingtonians loved Blanket Man so much, Gareth Morgan decided that it was only fitting to bury him on the site that he spent most of his life. A special service was held at 12.45pm to unveil the fitting shrine that reflected the beliefs of this wonderful individual. It is expected that this will become a place of worship and spritual prayer for the greiving people of Wellington"

This was a Jenny Shipply era. Major health reforms. Mental health cost cutting. They replaced Kingseat with a 20 bed intensive care unit , that was trashed within weeks. Nowdays people are assesed on their threat of harm to themselves or others and admitted for 3 week intensive care, to sort out a drug therapy regime. then released and monitored . Problem has become at times the 20 bed unit comes under pressure and to get one in you have to get one out. People who are odd like blanket man are a low level so dont get a lookin , every town has the oddballs . Its a bean counter solution. They also had a charge for clinics at hospitals, I remember being at one childrens block booking with the ex , she created quite a fuss , when she bought to the administrations attention, why should we have to wait while some one else on a benefit community, services card didn't have to pay. Those charges didn't last for long.

nope. think you will find they are recognising that the hospitals weren't closed down for the good of the patients but for the sake of the savings.
The post above yours mentions monitoring, how many times have we seen news reports were some mental "patient" (how can they be a patient when they aren't being treated?) has done themselves or others harm because the monitoring wasn't good enough? For a mental patient is asking them if they have their drugs and if they are taking them good enough? In many cases the answer is no. So many of those released into the community need more support than the community is equipped to give them and sometimes having them in one place is more effective but this doesn't mean a return to the Bedlam of the 1700s.

That's just not true. The closure of the institutions was advocated for by patients rights groups and for many patients it's led to much more fulfilling lives. Of course there's a legitimate argument on the level of funding/monitoring but to characterise it as a cost saving measure is just garbage.

In the early 90's the health board purchased a house next to my parents in their reasonably ritzy neighborhood as a 'halfway house' for mental patients. They sent out a letter telling residents what they planned to do AFTER they had already made the purchase. Nek Minnit my Mum had to listen to screaming at all hours and look at naked men running around the yard.

"advocated by patients rights groups" - true but doesn't mean that is why it was done, made a good excuse though.
"for many patients it's lead to much more fulfilling lives" - probably true but many have been left badly monitored and wondering in a daze unable to integrate .
There were a lot of patients in those hospitals that should not have been there but there have also been a lot kicked out on the street that require a institution to look after them. A lot of the second group are finding that institution to be run by Corrections so they are now worse off.

Why do you think my views that they require individual assessment and that some fair better in care are unrealistic?
Yes the current system is better but in terms of mental health we are still a long way behind physical health. To put mental health into physical health terms we don't seem to be far beyond American Civil War hacking off limbs standards.

Mental health covers such a wide range but I have family affected and friends, have lived next door to a house the started with able bodied and was then modified for full care (wheelchair, bed ridden etc) patients. Have friends that work with/in care houses. I have seen the before and after affects in the community. I have also worked with parents whose offspring were in a mental hospital and going through its closure.
I feel I have been far enough away to see the forest and not be blinded by the trees but not so far away that the forest looks like a green smudge.

Fair enough
I think I would be fair in saying though, that those that you are exposed to are likely the minority and the extreme end
I am not saying mass closure of hospital level mental facilities was the right thing it do. I just don't think locking up severely affected mental patients is always the answer. It may be the easy way out but not always the best way
But like anything in life, things are never black and white

?? but we have the Beehive here. OK, so they are mainly temporary Auckland exports but they still get attributed to Wellington.

According to todays Herald Samuel Jackson attended the funeral.
I hope he said "And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attend the funeral"

On the news tonight they were interviewing your everyday Wellingtonian and one responded that not only was he an icon for Wellington, but an icon for the whole country. Yes Blanket Man, so called for the blankets he sent to the victims of the ChCh earthquakes. Also got his name from the blankets he donated to under-privileged families in NZ who couldn't afford proper heating. Blanket Man, an icon of New Zealand.
There'll be a movie next. With Tem Morrison as BM.

Good idea - I'll help you.
And when there's only you and I left in the world who is going to be the rich one???
I'm I on piece work or contract?
though it was one of "better posts ' can't even remember writing it, and don't understand that last sentence, ...
the basic idea still is there. blanket man was at the margin of our society and needed/used the care we provided
hells bells the mark of a society is how it treats the weakest and those on the margin.
JK,and all those snivelling self serving greedy arses in Wellington, and in their corporate offices, have caused more pain and suffering than blanket man ever did.and if this is what nz or indeed society has become
I don't want to be a part of it
and if this makes me a pathetic piece of excrement, then I am one of the proudest pieces you will ever meet

you got the first bit right, sharp as a tack as always
I am glad the word apathetic was missing,
