So I have been riding for 18 months and occasionally when a guy or gal passes me they stick their foot out ... Is it a friendly 'hello rider' or have I upset them somehow?

Must be emulating their fav motoGP rider, or cocking leg for a piss?, or wanna play road rash?

It's an alternative to the wave. It is 'hello, fellow rider'.
Who knows, they may not want to release the bars at that precise moment...

They forgot they're not standing still and almost put their stand down, I do it all the time. :niceone:

well if you don't want to release your hands would the next option not be to do the mighty head nodd? <_<

It's very common in Europe, raising the left hand when coming the other direction, sticking out the right foot when passing.
here in NZ it seems to be the head nod, haven't been passed yet ;-) Only been riding for a few weeks here...

it always amazes me that so few people respond to my waves.. I've been waving since the 80's :P
Mind you, anyone who is old like me is probably concentrating on riding, since we have lost the ability to multitask.. so if you wave or nod to me and I dont reply, its not that I'm snobbing, I probably just missed it :P

"Shake a leg, youn' fella! You're in my way!"
Either that or "Ow! Ow! Leg cramp! Oh look, a fellow rider..."

Run for cover !!!
It's a waving thread !
Drew
17th January 2012, 05:37
This thread is all backwards, it does not ask why some people don't wave. Instead it asks why people do it funny.
Fuckin wierd man, really fuckin wierd.
I got ignored at least four times last night when I waved and nodded. WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

When I am on the BMW, I love the other BMWs they go all nuts waving at you

I try to wave when I can, usually a lefty salute, like the scouts... Unless I'm busy watching the idiot cager in front of me who might suddenly hit his brakes.

This is very true and If you happen to be on the same model they take on the appearance of a demented windmill. All good and I'm happy to acknowledge like minded bikers but have some decorum and more importantly stability chaps and chapesses.
Oh and the leg out can mean hi if you've just been overtaken but if you're following someone it is a sign of caution, they may have spotted something ahead that you may not have, usually coppers. Not common in NZ.

Actually, Tigadee and James Deuce are both partially right.
Such riders ARE old and at the time they do this, their hip has cramped up from sitting on a bike designed for persons 1/3 of their age. ( and DAMHIK ya bastards!)

ha didn't know about this 'wave' type. Never seen it to be honest. I normally get/give the lefty low 'wave' out to the side.
I actually use the leg thing to point out dodgy stuff on the road to riders behind me. Like big giant Waikato potholes, or 'black rivers' :)

when are you ever out on the bike Cam !! Since Brooke has become a work/stay at home mum/wife now so I doubt the trumpy would ever see daylight.... :bye:

I too have never seen this...
I also use a low left wave after passing
Speaking of regular waving some dude waved at me the other day so hard that I thought he might fall off!

Actually, people suddenly hit the brakes for all sorts of good reasons and seldom because they're idiots.

Ahhh, let me clarify: The particular cager that I have to keep a close eye on in the rare instance I am unable to wave to a fellow rider is the only one who is cause for concern and consternation...

If I'm following someone, a leg out is an invitation to overtake. Never seen it as a wave.

I do the the low left wave after passing thing too but for oncoming it's a head nod. Except if it's a Harley or a scooter of course.
The foot thing I've only seen off road to signal a faster rider which side to pass on.

I never thought waving would be such a popular topic, or should there be another name for sticking yer foot out? Now there's a thought - wave - nod - xtend!? Starting to sound like a flippin dance move now so I'll go b4 1 destroy the street cred and get back on my Hornet ...

At least here in Italy (but I believe worldwide) to stick the foot is a way to say "hello". The first time I was "addressed" in such a way I was quite upset and asked in the local forum; I was reassured that the gesture is friendly.
cheers
A.

Actually woudn't take it as a wave, only times i seen it is as a gesture that the rider's headed to the left wheel track or visa versa !

When I am on the BMW, my pants get in a bunch () at the back of my knees and I stick a leg out to straighten them out. I now know why sports bike guys have those pants with the thin bit on the back of the knee! The joy of being short on a tall bike means I can wave my legs around when needed - looks dorky but who cares?
:corn: (waiting for the inevitable panties in a bunch jokes)
BurningPlastic
19th January 2012, 20:59
For me the foot thing means 'I'm too tall for this bike'...
But otherwise I'm much more of a nodder than a waver though I think that's mostly because I'd prefer to wave with my right hand and usually that's not really an option.

I thought the foot out means there's a hazard on the road.
I hope they're not referring to you.

No foot out explanation but a good guide to motorcyclists hand signals. quite chuckleworthy from 30 seconds in.

the "OMG Hi to you!" was a great clip... I think that one had the cops sign in it, which helped me out not long after when a biker warned me of cops, which was actually a major accident just around a blind corner.

And seeing this is in the Wannabe and Newbie Bikers forum, here's a tip.
Always lift your head if nodding, that way you don't lose sight of the road as much. Nodding down takes your eyes further from the road - that's why you should never check your speedo!
And don't lift your left hand off the bar to wave in a left hand curve, while you're a learner you might find some confusion in having to pull with the right hand you still have on the bars to continue the left hand curve.
