Okay... I just sat my full car licence in my friends car. Passed.
Need to buy a car, big enough to carry a Yamaha R1 in the back for track days etc and to Sth Island later this summer.
Don't wonna a van, don't wonna a ute.
Anyone here use a big 4x4? I like the ability to off-road as there is a chance for dirt biking.
Or buy a s/w with a tow bar and go with a trailer.... Suggestions??
Most importantly needs to be less than $4k.

I don't think such a thing exists, unless you want to put the bike on its side which is a bit of a stupid idea to begin with.
Buy a car and a trailer.

I reckon a van would be better as you could drag all your track day gear around & when you head down south you could sleep in it as well.... can't imagine a R1 tagged on the back of a 4 door sedan

To fit an R1 upright in the back of an enclosed 4x4 you'd need some sort of military truck.
For $4k you want a ute, van or car and trailer. 4x4 utes and vans are great to have but (utes especially) are much more expensive to buy. If you don't really need it then don't bother unless you've got more money to play with.
EDIT: Generally speaking; a ute will drive as well as a shit car regardless of whether it's loaded up or not, a good van will get blown around a bit more but won't be any worse than a 15-20 year old 6 cylinder Falconmodore with a trailer, a shit one will climb hills at 40km/h. The big advantage of a van is that when you get somewhere the bike is still locked up in the back out of the weather. Trailers are good things to have if you have the space to store them, get one for ~$1500 and keep it for years. I don't think you could get any 4x4 worth having as well as a trailer for $4k. I'd combine the trailer with any early-mid 90s 6 cylinder car and then you've still got a decent-ish 4 wheel vehicle when you're not moving your R1.

I'm sure I saw a guy with a GSXR in the back of a big Pajero... He took the rear seats out. And the rear cabin was just tall enough for the bike to fit in. I don't know if he too air out of the tyres. But the bike was definitely vertical and strapped in.
I had a look on TM. Seems I need 2k for car with a towbar and I reckon I could find a covered trailer for 2k. Fuck trailers are expensive.

Why does it have to be a 4x4? Unless you live in a mud bog, on a beach or in the snow 4wd is just not necessary.

Nah nothing out there, Try a club cub or single cab ute (you can get your bike on with tail gate) also a long wheel base van would do the trick.

What is wrong with a Van? Frontal impact is about all I can think of, but you ride a roadbike so can't much of a deterrent!
Nissan Patrol spring to mind as a possibility, but probably not tall enough.

Try and hit some 4x4 tracks while in Sth Island with mates and for dirt biking too, but not a major. I thought there would a particular 4x4 big enough to fit a bike if you take out the rear seats.
Seems car and trailer are the way to go

It's not that hard, even the column shift ones are easy to get used to. The sitting over the front axles feels a bit different to a car. But quite frankly, if you can't get your head around that stuff, get the fuck off my roads!

Long wheel base safari might do ya, just double check on height with the seats out. I can possibly measure up my dads one tonight if you like? his is only swb, but the heights are the same from memory.
Go for a ute. I know we got the vtr on the back of the commy easy, and it was low enough to not be too much of a pain. The ls2 made it more fun

Buy a good tow car such as a 6 cylinder Falcodore. You can get a reasonably tidy mid 1990s model for $3k. The remaining $1k can be spent on a trailer. If a Falcodore is too expensive, then buy a diesel Laurel as they're fairly cheap to run, even when towing a trailer. If the speedo mysteriously stops working (as they often do on old diesels) then you'll save even more money.
A diesel Corona or Corolla is also worth looking at.

I second this. A falcadore will be good on the open road, perfect for towing a trailer, and bulletproof.
For a funner option a 300zx has more than enough torque to tow a trailer, and will keep you awake on the twisties. However a dunger's repair bills will keep you awake at night.

Something like this (http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used-cars/mitsubishi/magna/auction-438827499.htm) or this (http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used-cars/holden/commodore/auction-438131209.htm) would be fine to tow a bike around the country.

Keep in mind that when towing a trailer (especially on the open road) a Falcodore might even drink less fuel than a typical 2L car because the bigger engine doesn't have to work as hard. My mates 3.8L VT Commodore towing a trailer drinks less fuel on the open road than my other mates 1.6L Escudo without a trailer. Both vehicles are standard, and the Commodore actually gets driven harder than the Escudo.

Pussy. Toyota Hiaces rock. 2.8 Diesel drives just like a car - only more fun.
I like the comment about having the bike locked inside a van too, weather, security, not towing anything. Why the fuck wouldn't you?

You Wont find a car big enough....Honestly, Ive been selling car since i was 16 (im almost 22), i know what im talking about.
You could get a single or club cab ute (or a double cab but you will need to leave the tail gate down)
Or a Van.
Or else buy a motorbike trailer ($500-$1,000 on Trademe) and a tow car, if you get a tow car try and get something like a 2.7 diesel Terrano, Cheap to run and also the added bonus of being able to going 4WDing (if it takes your Fancy).
I'm more than happy to have a look at your links on trademe if you see something that you think you might like and tell you value, Reliablity and what not.

Fuck yeah, Hiaces go hard. I drove a 2.4 turbo diesel about a year ago and it'd spin the inside back wheel out of a round about in 2nd gear in the dry long enough to draw plenty of disapproving glares. It didn't struggle at all to cruise at 120+ on the flat and hills weren't much of problem.
Old, small petrol vans are just a joke when you get to a hill with much of a load but most will easily get you anywhere just as fast as a car.

Just a thought but if you want to cross the straight you may want to consider a ute or van. To take a small trailer is going to cost you about an extra $120 each way:facepalm:.
Vans are the way to go in my opinion, dry, secure and as previously mentioned you can sleep in the back:woohoo:

:oi-grr: You don't know what your missing
If it helps any (for sizing) I have a Landrover Series IIa LWB & a CR250, the back wheel of the CR overhangs buy about 500mm give or take (I think my mates VT250 overhung about 200mm) & getting it onboard is not always an easy task (tho I do have mil spec height)
Otherwise theres always those shit people mover things, they drive & are safe like a car, have space similar to a van, but look like shit... it's another option

You won't get much of a diesel van or ute let alone a 4wd for 4000 and a petrol 4wd will cost heaps to run

I know this bloke who runs a motorcycle towing company if it's any help to ya :whistle::killingme
But in all seriousness if the towing part is just for track days, consider buying a station wagon or sedan with a towbar and buy yourself a cheap trailer. There is a lot around for $2k in terms of cars and a pretty decent trailer could be had for the same. There is your $4K.

Just did a quick scope on TM and found this http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/trailers/single-axle/auction-441050900.htm,
$850 leaves you with a decent amount for a tow vehicle/daily runner
