Could someone point me in the right direction please. I would like to know what the benifits are of installing a TRE on a 97 TL1000s.

Why do they need a grounding wire and what is the ECU number of a 97 original ecu.

Thanks:sunny:

Well done and congratulations on choosing the most technical forum to ask such a question sir! :woohoo:
I do believe that there is no benefit in installing a TRE on the '97 models as they are unrestricted' out of the box.
But then again...I'm not a technical chap

The TRE will remove the timing retard on the first 3 gears, personaly as they struggle to keep the front wheel on the ground stock its not something I have ever bothered with , better to spend money on maintenance and upgrading suspension , etc.
The ECU on both 97's I have is 32920-02F01 , however I think these are the replacement recall ECU's .

The main difference between 97 and the later TL's is in the inlet ports , the 97 having bigger round shape ports , the later ones a D shape that gave better low end performance at the expense of some top end . Despite popular opinion , the later bikes probably have slightly better real world performance , however I kind of like the grumpy less refined nature of the 97 , its more hot rod like.

Sure thing, I've had 4 '97's and know where you're coming from.
I was, however under the impression that the 1997 models did not require a TRE as their first 3 gears were not 'retarded' .
Were all those that advised me incorrect? Intrigued sir

Possibly , I am not 100% sure , perhaps that's why I have never felt the need to get one ?

Yeah I'm 99% certain that is the case. We also had a 1999 SX(?) model which someone did a 'Norfland' version of a TRE ( .20c diode from Dick Smiths) on it and we certainly felt the difference.
Best investment on a TL is to score some new suspenders and brakes IMO...which I know Mr Saul has done.

Edit...my last one also had a -1 front sprocket and a +3 rear. Giddy up!

Sigh no you are both right. It was all a bit of a test see my post:facepalm:

Most 97's (if not all) , however did go through a recall process where the ecu's were replaced there is the gap where the TRE comes into play.

There you go , Thats why Ivan http://www.ivansperformanceproducts.com/tre.htm lists a TRE for the 97's , its good to learn things

I'd go for an ATRE, I made a few up in november (still have 2 left) the difference is that when your in neutral with the clutch out it wont idle so rough.
My Argh came with a clutch switch bypass with make it use a different map with loss power too.

Can even put a switch on to select different gear maps.

I'm working on a GPI with built in TRE and Shift light but making one with the right aesthetics below the price of ones already available is proving difficult.

However I'd like an output for shift light and GPI in helmet wirelessly too... and with mp3 player + radar inputs. no wires to helmet just fit batteries :shit:
