The Greek Culture Ministry has suggested the nation's archaeological attractions, such as the Acropolis, be rented out to advertising firms, while Germany's leader, Angela Merkel, has reportedly suggested Greece sell its famous islands to avoid national bankruptcy. (http://nz.totaltravel.yahoo.com/a/-/12689875/greece-told-to-rent-out-the-acropolis/) bwaaaaaaaa ha ha ha haaaaaaaaa ... sell your islands :killingme. And the bid for total world domination goes on. I'll buy them and then rent them back to the Greeks

Think of the value of the naming rights! Who fancies a visit to the Deutsche Bank Acropolis or Santorini, sponsored by Google?

hmmm, so does selling the islands equate to selling sovereignty?

Hope not, otherwise NZ is just as %#&'d

Hmmmm, not too sure now, I was leaning towards yes a la Falklands... then towards no as it'll likely cause a shit storm amongst the population. Still, it'll be interesting to see if Smerkel gets her own way.

You can buy islands all over the world including NZ. The islands remain within the jurisdiction of the nation they are a part of including any local laws about beach and foreshore access. An island is simply a piece of land which has water around it instead of other land. Not a big deal.

I don't think they are talking simple land purchase in this case. More like the Russians sell Alaska to the USA.
The Turks could buy the other half of Cyprus. :dodge:

China could buy us.....
I hope Winston is right in regards to Foreign ownership that soverignity is maintained , but i kind of feel when you have such big money in a country surely by their having such deep pockets that you'd end up with some kind of lobbying at govt. level & the inevitable nepotism that comes with it.
