What are you guys running for adv riding. On my klx400e fcr my main is 165 & needle 4 notches from the top.
I have heaps more power than I need but it drinks too much gas for adv riding.
I don't mind sacrificing power for better economy.
3x3 done & airbox lid missing, stock pipe been kinda gutted so pretty loud with it.

I've been trolling thru thumpatalk but got pretty bogged down wit hit all so thought I'd see what the locals are doing.

Looks like a 155 main is usual with the 3x3 mod.

That's what I'm using with the FRC39 on the 650.

Contains a 160 main as a hot up kit.

What main jet are you using, if its the 160 change it to the 155.
I was running a 148 main with the standard 398cc, that was with Hotcams and a full system though

Hmmm, might struggle to get a straight answer mate. Drop a quick email / PM to Eddie Sinsneros (sp) on TT. He helped me with mine. Sounds like you have a biggish main jet from memory which is only much good at full twist. It all becomes kinda complexish when you open her box. Play with the clip would be my recommendation and then cover your box back up as she leans out to keep the right burn (how is the plug burning btw?)

Sorry, I'm not much help as I had a full yoshi as well as 3x3 and I was after power rather than economy. I think I was only getting 180km stock tank till I was sniffing fumes, 160km doing fun adv riding. Cant recall what my settings were but they wouldnt apply to your setup anyway...

Thanks Nordie & bubbs
I went into the Suzuki shop & the mechanic reckons the KLX came out stock with the 165. He also asked if it ran well. The answer is yep - very very well. So i decided to button her up & leave as it is. if adv riding I will just have to keep the throttle handle under control.

Getting the carb in & out is not an easy exercise tho. I ended up taking lots of things off to get it prised out from under the frame. The 3rd time :facepalm:it got easier but I have no wish to take it out again.

I hasn't leaked fuel out one of the overflow pipes like it was doing before I played with it. FIngers crossed.

I took it for a blat up Maunga today & it really does have shitloads of stonk to it. I pity the poor buggers that had to ride one for the DB tho- my butt is pretty nicely flossed:pinch:

Padders, the FCR39 on the DRZ come stock with a 142 main jet running stock pipe with airbox snorkel in. (Same bike as KLX)
Most guys do the 3 x 3 mod and chuck a 152 jet in with stock pipe, or 155 -157-163 jets with a performance pipe and needle 3 clips from top.

Go ask the shop for a main jet between 150 and 155, it's a 10 min job to change over.
I've got a FCR carb service manual on PDF if you want a copy.:niceone:

I'll see what main jet is on my spare FCR39...

Looks like a 150 main and 3rd clip from top is a pretty standard mod.

Hey Fran, What bike was your spare FCR carb off ... DR650?
The KTM runs a FCR39 as well, but uses a massive 178 main jet, needle 3 clips from top. Eeeeeek! No wonder best fuel economy is 16km/litre (cruising on highway)

Here's something that might help, found it buried in my DRZ files

DRZ common carb settings:
DRZ400 Jetting for: sea level, stock exhaust, stock airbox
•142 main jet
•EMN needle - clip 3
•45 pilot jet
•2 turns fuel screw

DRZ400 Jetting for: sea level, stock exhaust or quiet 96db aftermarket pipe, 3x3 Mod
•155 main jet
•EMN needle - clip 3
•45 pilot jet
•2 turns fuel screw
•o-ring mod

DRZ400 Jetting for sea level, aftermarket pipe with open muffler
•160 main jet
•EMN needle - clip 3
•45 pilot jet
•2 turns fuel screw
•o-ring mod

DRZ400 Jetting for: 4000-600ft, stock exhaust or quiet 96db aftermarket pipe, 3x3 Mod
•145 main jet
•EMP needle - clip 3
•45 pilot jet
•2 turns fuel screw
•o-ring mod

DRZ400 Jetting for: 4000-6000ft,aftermarket pipe with open muffler
•150 main jet
•EMP needle
•clip 3
•45 pilot jet

Cheers bro, better to get used to getting that carb out!

Wow good info guys.
It looks like my jet is a huge mofo in comparison to stock set up.
I might try a 155 or 160 & shift the clip up one.

I didn't understand the o ring mod. (If that's the one where you wrap it around some pulley or something) What's it supposed to do.

The o-ring goes on the accelerator pump..... the exploded parts diagram on the PDF file will help :niceone:

$13 for a proper, heavier accel-pump spring.

My "spare" carb is off a Yammy dirt race bike. No coasting enrichener or leak jet.
The one I'm running is the FCR39MX off a YZF450 quad.

The DR comes with the Mikuni BST40 like most of the KTM640's.

yep hehehe.
I now know what a pumper carb (if that is what it is) does - it pumps a squirt of gas down the chamber.

Your spark plug should let you what jetting you need.

Find a hill and crack the throttle, you want to go for a mile or so with the throttle fully open.
Hit the kill switch, pull in the clutch. Read the plug.

Good article Here (http://www.4strokes.com/tech/sparkplg.asp) on the procedure

Or stick your finger up its bum and see if you get a light smear of poo or the full black finger.

In this case, it's a very black finger.

Just replaced the main jet 165 clip 4 notches down to a 155 & clip 3 notches down.
Left the fuel mixture as it was at 1 1/2 turns out

Went for a short ride up the driveway & although it goes well there is no real head snapping backwards at full throttle like before. I take it this is what is to be expected & not something I could have done accidently?

The main jet is tested with full throttle riding.

Hori Bay tomorrow?

Cheers Pete that's an excellent chart. I've finally got my head around the circuits in carbs now so i'm not quite going in blindly.

Not sure about the weekend but tomorrow is family day.
