Can I put a bike on hold that has run out of rego by a few weeks? Do I have to pay the lot when it comes back on? looking at a new bike.

Pretty sure you have 30 days grace from the expiry date...

Yes and you get those few weeks deducted once you renew it.

My understanding was that you had to pay whatever was required to bring it up to date before you put it on hold. Either way, the longer you wait, the longer the eventual bill will be.

Play Dumbarse,
I have never had a problem with putting things on hold even if rego has been expired a month or so they just start the min 3 months from when it expired,
just remember your postive you rang them up to put it on hold:msn-wink:

Will be putting an offer on a bike today. Seller says he will rego it for 3 months on sale but that my go when I screw him down. Wont be using the bike for a bit anyway so if he does i will just chuck it on hold anyway. So I would only be liable for what is due from the start of my ownership.

yea this is my experience, & you'll have to let the hold expire (3mths) or they'll back charge you for the time should you take it off early. Money extortion is the NZTA business
Changing ownership should allow you to start from the change date, but as above you'll still need to keep it off for at-least 3mths, else they'll charge you for the time regardless of the fact you didn't use it

You have 60 days from expirey to put on hold without backdating in cash. Three month min hold starts from the day put on hold.

^ the above is correct; based on the fact I experienced this and found the same information in person from AA last week

If the rego has expired by 60 days or more, a fee is payable, (which is probably all of it owing per day).
So can be expired for 59 days. :msn-wink:

could you use the MR27 (?) to expire the three month hold early, without the backdating penalty?

No As you can only change the expiry date of your rego before it expires not after it expires
