Hi all

Just wondering if anyone can suggest good motorbike books which can be worn during the work day to go along with business shirt/pants attire . I currently backpack a 2nd pair of black shoes to work, but gets a bit tedious .

I leave my work shoes at work, and hop out of the boots and into em when I arrive. Also allows me 10-15 minutes to run/hobble around the office in my socks :D

+1 I do the same (tho I spend most the day in socks), just leave 'em at work

Proper bike boots are simply not made for walking. Either leave a pair of shoes at work, or just get some tidy looking steel cap work boots instead of bike boots.

...this is where a number of people will post aghast at the suggestion of using work boots for riding...

...this is where I will say, you're not racing, you're commuting...

...this is where they will continue to profess the error of my ways in even suggesting such reckless abandon, that it is inviting loss of limbs and crushing of toes to so much as consider such brazen carelessness...

...here is where I will unsub from the thread and go for a ride, wearing my Warehouse steel cap safety boots, and even more shocking, cordura jacket and pants instead of a one piece leather race suit.

+ leaving a pair of shoes at work.. I also cycle in, and cycling shoes are even worse to wear than boots lol (since they are kevlar or fibreglass and designed to have no flex).

I have a pair of rubber soled, leather topped croc dress shoes.. really comfy to wear about the office and look decent (people dont know they are crocs)

Ya know I don't think it's a good idea using work boots to ride your bike in! I had a second cousin twice removed who rode in jandals on an R1 and died because of it!

You have a much higher chance of loosing all of your limbs and the possibility of crushing your feet if you crash!

You also shouldn't wear normal pants whilst riding because when it rains it gets bloody cold.

You are going to die if you continue like this.

Fucking durr. Steel capped leather work/combat boots are a world removed from jandals and in most cases just as good as bike boots, and with an integrated tongue (most combat boots) can be pretty waterproof too. Bloody cold? Take a concrete pill. Your cousin sounds(ed?) like a fuckwit.

what they all said.

if you are entirely wedded to the idea of not changing your shoes (maybe you have the worst toe jam in the western world), perhaps consider something like these (not steelcap)

Adidas SWAT team boots. super comfy, black leather and unobtrusive, very supportive round the ankle. mine were $215 landed.

I ride with these (http://www.trademe.co.nz/sports/hunting-shooting/apparel/other/auction-444645686.htm), they're nice and snug fitting, offer reasonable ankle protection, and I try to keep them clean so they look just like normal leather shoes when I need to look the part. Still not as good as proper motorbike boots though, mind you... Nothing beats the feeling of proper protection when riding...

I ride in with riding boots and change into formal shoes I leave at the office.

Obviously proper riding boots are the choice but shorter style riding boots are also available and easier to walk in.

Tactical type boots are not as good but a better option than jandals and shoes.

Got a pair of entry level DriRider boots myself... only a couple of hundy, and look alright under trousers... well, they did when new, now they're knackered after a couple of years of constant wear and tear all day...

I've been commuting in some half length diadora boots for the last 3 years, only just now starting to leak a tiny bit around one of the stitchings in downpours...and I wear them 5 days a week from 6am-6pm...

Something along the lines of this maybe?
http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/1/1/36/18311/ITEM/Firstgear-Express-Boots.aspx
I found the Diadora boots which looked very similar to the above pair to be fantastic, but a bit too hot.

There was a video posted here of a piece of research conducted in Aussie into the effectiveness of motorcycle gear. They found that wearing proper boots reduced serious injuries to the foot by about 70something percent. BUT wearing ANY kind of 'leather boot' (rather than leather work shoe, sneaker etc) reduced serious injury to the foot by around 55%. This was only city riding though.

Doc Marten or Johnny Reb kinda styles...neither bike boots NOR work boots. so you win both ways :P

Check the sponsor above for short boots if you're interested. The Diadora boots Icemaestro & Milts referred to are excellent - again - not as good as full length boots but a very good compromise for commuting.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone . Decided to go for the "leave them at work" mode . Some of those boots look nifty though, i quite like the idea of soe boots which can fit the job when needed for around the town riding, or stopping for dinner .

I also have a pair of dririder boots that were also my only pair of shoes for most of last year. They looked alright but wore down after less than a year...

Its a waste of boots when they get worn down doing things that arent biking..

Just leave a pair of shoes at work, unless you work in safety boots, which are fine to ride in.

Or put them in your bag. Surely you don't have such a chronic lack of luggage space when you ride that you can't carry a pair of shoes.

I once saw a character on TV say that her mother warned her that taking your shoes off was the first step on the road to seduction.

When riding the bike to work I used to take my shoes off twice a day, and nothing happened. So her mum was talking shite.

Interesting thread. Most days I wear my Alpinestars all day, if I have a posh meeting I will put my proper shoes on that live in the bottom drawer. Often thought I should just get a pair of 8 hole Dr Martens, or ex German para boots that I used to wear in the UK.

Then I saw those in the post above. Not sure how to describe them really, words fail me. Showed the wife, she asked if they were mens or ladies

And yet. And yet........

I got a pair of these from when I worked for Australia Post http://rossiboots.com.au/catalogue/catalogue_details.asp?prodID=151
They're pretty comfy to walk around it (one guy wore them for a 3 hour walking round) and look just like smart casual shoes (same guy wore them out on Saturday night to fancy Melbourne casinos and such, maybe he had no other shoes?). As they are proper motorbike boots they offer pretty good protection. I don't know where you can get them here but you could just got for a wee holiday to Australia and while you're there get a job at Australia Post and get them for free.

I use these Oliver boots -33-650 Mid cut zip sided lace up boot BLK - most comfortable boots I have worn for a long time nice and light no problem wearing them all day and doing a lot of walking and standing,
I wear them with a good pair a uniform pants and they look tidy.
They have a zip up the side for quick release but I never use it.
Best part waterproof on the bike and warm went to Napier and back in a day 2 weeks ago rained there and back and no wet feet I keep them well polished so they stay waterproof.
$199 dollars or cheaper if your company has an account at NZ safety in Petone.

I use these as my daily footwear. Fully waterproof, polish up nicely, very comfortable for walking in doing daily stuff.

I've had mine for 3 years now and the soles are starting to wear out. 3 years of constant daily abuse (crashed in them once to) and they have taken everything I have thrown at them.

Very good boots and I will be purchasing them again at the end of the year when I suspect mine will give up the ghost.

I have spent my entire working career in work boots and well some are dogs and some are slippers. These are my two fav:

I am a great fan of the Blue Steel brand of work boots. Even their tall shit kickers are very comfortable to wear all day.

At work nowdays I wear Courtney brand boots, these are my favourite by far and the most comfortable and hard wearing boots I have ever owned, but they are a bit pricy here. http://www.courteneyboot.com

I've been alternating between my DM Industrial boots and my regular bike boots + a pair of shoes.

The DM Industrials are great, but were one of the final sets made in the UK before productions switched to Asia. I don't know how much quality has suffered in the transition, but the specific model I have no longer exists. I think I'm going to try a pair when I have the time as mine are finally beginning to show some serious wear...

The UK site and the US/World site show different boots, so both are worth looking at.
