Have recently bought a GS1200ss. The speed limiter has been sorted but does anyone know a fix to get the speedo reading higher than 180?

I don't think there is a fix for the speedo reading. The only suggestion I can make is to permanently fix a cheap GPS unit to the latice work behind the instrument cluster.

Now as to the speed limiter, can you tell me exactly what was done to disable it. Mine is still active and I have been told 3 different methods of disabling it, but all too vague to even consider following.

Edit: I just noticed that you are a new member to the site. Welcome to another discerning rider. :2thumbsup

Chriss: welcome to Kiwibiker.

Hubby has one of these bikes. He got the bike shop (Wellington Motorcycles) to disconnect the speedo limiter thingy at his last service.

As far as we know also, there is no way to get the speedo to read higher than 180. Jantar, your suggestion of a GPS thingy is probably a good suggestion? Hubby rides with me on my Ducatis with fully working speedos, so I can tell him we've hit 300kph during our ride and he can't contradict me!!

Me thinks you can get those clip on bicycle things that can read up to 300kph (mind boggles)

just to jog my addled memory -the 1200ss has an analog speedo--same as say a gsxr1100 fom 1990 doesnt it??
please remind me
if thats the case then swap speedos with a 280km/h one
the calibration will be the same.
if its not the case you used to be able to buy a 2 to one reduction unit for speedos in the states. they were about $40 US and screwed in the back of the speedo and the cable screwed into that--so 100km/h is 200 etc etc.
then a real clever sod will get the speedo face redone to read its new figures

No, The GS1200SS has an electronic speedo.

So these bikes come out of the factory with a 180km/hr restrictor in them and an electronic speedo.

Damn.

But tell me, why do you want to know how fast you're going? Everything over 100 km/hr on the open road is academic anyway...

How about this - look at the rev counter. 4,000 at 100 km/hr; 8,000 at 200 km/hr, 10,000 at 250 km/hr.

Worked for me on the FZR...

still has a speedo drive off the front wheel or is that also lectronic??

Jantar

No, There is no speedo drive from any wheel. It is all computerised from the revs and the selected gear.

aww bugger.well there goes one idea.I wonder if its able to be recalabrated at an instrument company. The old XJ750p (cop bike) speedo used to have a series of switched=s in the back to set them up -maybee the suzuki unit is the same

It's a digital unit, driven by a sensor on the front countershaft, same as any Suzuki.

You can't make it read higher unfortunately. Shame, because it would be quite nice to see how one of them puppies goes de-restricted. Chuck a set of GSXR1000K cams at it and some 40mm CVs of a later 1100R. Get a Yoshi exhaust (if it aint got one) and mate, you've got yourself one *mean* retro hot rod.

what about a sideways shift then -fit a speedo unit complete from an old model gsxr1100 -the pickup on the front wheel would be the most complicated bit methinks but still possible

Cyclecomputers -a good accessory to fit as they can be calibrated to give 99% accuracy or better, plus they have useful functions like average speed, various odo's, timers etc.
Some read to 99km/hr and others to 199km/hr and at least one goes to 300km/hr (sigma)
You'll have to read the specs before buying to see which is which, but the ones that say read to 99 then start counting up from 0 again so if you are passing traffic and the cyclecomputer is reading 38 km/hr, you know you are doing 138 km/hr
The warehouse has a model with wireless sensor for $48

Just put a speedo from a non-limited suzuki. You need one from a model that has a pickup from the sprocket nut, they all cross over. I've got a GSX-R 1000 one on my sidecar (which runs a 'busa) that I swap over to the GS on occasion.

A mate of mine put one of thoes on his T5, It works great..... When the unit is a foot away, any further and it wont work makes it pretty difficult.
