View Full Version : Streetstock on a Yamaha Scorpio?

jrandom

Just like the thread title says.

Can I get some comments on the idea from people who've been out in that class? Is there any possibility of being competitive on certain tracks? (Manfeild is obviously a bit pointless, but some of the Taupo configurations might be choice.)

Or would the idea be pointless anywhere, unless we could get a whole bunch of Scorpios out?

I'm pretty keen aye.

Expressions of interest from Scorpio owners / comments from Streetstock racers / general mockery plz. Next potential round is only 10 days away: PMCC, Taupo track 4 on 12 Feb.

You aren't going to win on it but worth a try for a laugh.

It's better to go fast on a slow bike ... than go slow on a fast bike.

I recall Robert Holden winning races on "non competitive" bikes ...

Scorpio's are 225 4stroke aren't they???

If so you'd have to enter in Prolite 250,Still worth a shot though,Just dont try it at a National round

If someone had a spare Scorpio lying around I'd be in. Lots of fun, particularly if you're doing it as a 2nd class.

Loved chucking the wifes Scorpio around when she had it, but correct me if I am wrong, but doesn't it have a 5 speed box? Could be a little limiting if you wanted to race it.

There is a 250cc four stroke single class that might let you play with them.

It's called Moto3.

Yep. It tops out at 145 ish indicated (132 on a GPS) flat tack. And that's about all it's got the power for, so 5 gears is plenty.

I had to have this post explained to me, because I really haven't been following the GP these last couple of seasons with all the changes and whatnot, but I now realise that you're being very funny.

Anyway, I'll see if I can make the PMCC practice day on 11 Feb and race on 12 Feb. I'm pretty keen.

Stick a Number on you Seat (So the flaggies can see it), and take off your side stand (or borrow a couple of zip ties for the day - I can supply those) and it's all go (I take it all your breathers are in a catch bottle)....

See you there. Will be good to have a few more ProLites in the field...
At least then Spyda won't call the class tedious... ;)

Coolant? Heh. Scorpios got none of your fancy 'coolant', son. Edit: Beat you to your edit!

Yes, there'll be a catch bottle on the breather.

Number on the seat? On which side? Both sides? Is that compulsory, or can one get away with just a number on the front?

See you there. Will be good to have a few more ProLites in the field...

If all goes to plan, there'll be two Scorpios at the track next weekend. If everyone fucks off and we can't catch them then we'll just have to play by ourselves.

Yeah, had a brain fart there for a second, and forgot we were talking aircooled ;)

Just need two numbers in accordance with the rule book.
If at Taupo (as you will be), have it so it can be read from the right hand side....
Reminds me, I better change the nose fairing before next weekend...

Well, put it this way, there will always be bikes you end up in a battle with, there is about a 20 second spread in lap times From the fastest CBR250 to the not so fast SS150. We have a lot of juniors int he field.

Rightio. Do I read the PMCC website correctly that they only allow numbers under 100, or will I be able to use my old number 256? Suppose I should give them a yell. I've resigned myself to sucking up the late entry fee, but it might be a good idea to ping them before the day.

Yes, give Nige a yell to see if you can run a 3 digit number.... I think it is only for the nationals? Could be wrong, often am. road.racing@pacclub.co.nz

It's actually on Track 5, a MotoTT creation which is Track 4 plus a chicane in the back straight. I wouldn't complain at all if that was the track for the weekend too, to be honest!

(Edit: in any case it still works as practice for Track 4)

Right, that's me and kiwifruit entered for next weekend.

Big ups to Nigel from PMCC for being so helpful, not to mention being a good cunt and taking a phone call on a Sunday afternoon.

:sunny:

Spose I should finish putting my Scorpio back together now.

kiwifruit's going with a total-loss system, battery and starter motor ripped out etc. (It runs fine, you just have to use the kick starter every time.) Airbox off.

I'll leave my bike a bit more stock, just jets and a gutted muffler. I have a feeling that'll help the top end. (And I'll be putting it back on the road at some stage too.)

Both will be on Lasertecs.

If kiwifruit gives me the learn hard at the practice day I may well panic and start yanking more things off of the bike on Saturday night. Heh.

It's fine, bro, if we give anyone the learn and they raise a protest against our machines and it's upheld, Nigel will just record our results in an 'Open' class.

But nobody's going to do that, because we'll still be on the slowest bikes in the field. Off the back, unless any of the other entrants actually can't ride. We're just looking to have some fun here man, not build stealth superbikes and steal all the prize money.

Thanks to Nigel from PMCC. We're in with:
Minilites - Multi cylinder 4 stroke 250s, ZXR, CBR, FZR etc
Prolites - Single and twin cylinder 4 stroke 250s
Streetstock - 150cc two stroke, RG, KR etc

We won't be eligible for points in any of the above classes.

I expect the wee scorpios will be a bit slow in a straight line. Will be fun all the same. Hopefully we'll see more scorpios on the track in the future... there are plenty out there!

Many thanks to Katman for stopping by and lending a hand during a busy day.

:sunny:

Still a bit stuck, unfortunately. The spark plug's getting some current, but not enough for a spark. I'm scratching my head over what we've changed that could've caused that. I don't have a Scorpio wiring diagram. Perhaps there are electrical differences between the earlier wire-wheel models and the alloy wheel version.

I may find myself racebikeless for the moment and petitioning Nigel tomorrow for a credit toward a Round 4 entry, I fear...

And you never know, Allan might be able to help me work some magic on it this evening. You really shouldn't need a wiring diagram if all you've done is unplug stuff.

Given how cheap and nasty those critters are, I feel pretty safe assuming there is a mess of wires normally squished into the headlight housing.

I would start there. Common as hell to plug stuff back into something it didn't come out of when you removed shit.

Weak spark, instead of no spark indicates that the feed to your coils is less than it should be. Trace the wires from the coil to their source. (Not the ones that go to the CDI or pulse generator if they're real cheap). Chuck a multimeter on with the ignition on and see what ya got. Shouldn't be fuck all less than your battery.

If all wires have a notable drop in voltage (anything over half a volt) to what you have across the battery, you're problem is with the kill/ignition switch. Do this bit first, and do both tests with the ignition turned on.
