No, not sex, that is in a class of its own.

Not being allowed to ride a bike and not liking three wheelers, I have been having to "make do" with our MX5. Being a Mk1 but a '94 1800 manual, it is said to be the most desirable of the breed and we lucked on it about three years ago getting it for a good price.

Only creature comforts are power steering and power brakes, I tossed out the air-con pump as the clutch had gone on it and it was several kilos of dead weight. Aftemarket bits are Momo steering wheel and pedals, 15" alloys and wider uni-directional tyres. Has the small front and rear spoilers which look nice as do the chrome sill plates but otherwise it is standard.

I'd call it tidy but by no means immaculate. It has had little use as it is a fair-weather toy and the weather hasn't matched up with many of my days where I was up to driving it, so it has only done 7,000km since we bought it...

But each time I get down into it and take it for a spin I fond myself grinning and suddenly all is well with life! I took it to Panmure today to pick up my daughter and along with the interest from other car drivers and passengers, especially pretty young girls, sigh..., I was impressed with its power and handling all over again! It has so much torque you can drop it into 5th at 60km/h and drive it like an auto or you can wick it up and explore the redline and blow the doors of most anything else. Okay, it's not a rocketship like a Ferrari but for a modest 130hp it doesn't have much weight to move and ton-up speeds are easy.

Give it a twisty road and it really sticks, I've never found out whether the limited slip diff works or not it has so much grip and go I think one would have to be brutally provocative to activate it. Mind you I don't drive it much when it's wet.

I always say these are more fun than s barrel full of monkeys and only the Honda S2000 could tempt me otherwise but they are in a much higher price bracket. For affordable, laugh yourself silly fun where you can genuinely mix it with a motorbike and not be disgraced you can't beat them!

Not all MX5's had them but you could find out by provoking wheelspin on a wet corner, as long as you were careful to give yourself room.

The modern day equivalent of my favourite car - the Lotus Elan! Small, light, nimble with superb road feel. Smitten since I took one for a drive in 1963! If I could find an Elan for non-megabucks, I'd have one - failing that, an MX5 is an entirely acceptable substitute - and a bit more civilised as well.

Not if you set them up right...I had one with a slippery diff with Minilites fitted with Dunlop Targas. Set it up like my race car, no toe in front and rear, 12 deg of castor, max camber on the front and (I think) about 4.5 deg camber on the rear. Twitchy as hell and huge fun but hell on tyres.

Used to upset a few people on track days and no one managed to stay with me through the Sisters on the Desert road, and a number tried including the guy in the Clubsport who drove himself of the road trying. Lucky for him, red face only, no damage.

Hugely underrated car and can be made to go very well. Got taken to the cleaners up North by a guy who had fitted a rotary to his. Similar handling but way faster on exit.

Ed, if you want to check your slippery diff. get on a dirt road (private one of course...) and stand on the gas just before the apex and you should be able to hold it sideways with no "sawing" at the wheel. If it's not working you'll probably go right round....hence the private road..........

Can't recommend the MGF, even when done up by a specialist and having had the plastic head gasket and the spaghetti head bolts replaced with steel one's they still fall apart. You can do good things with that heavy old cast iron motor, my bro-in-law raced an 1800 in dirt track and it was competitive and reliable. Trouble is the B is a classic and you start at a fairly high price to get one then spend money on it to get it going and handling more like an MX5 than an Oxford... :innocent:

Nice but maybe I'm getting old. The idea of having a monster in disguise appeals to me and that 5lt Mustang powered one was on TM a while ago for $45k. It was built properly and not much was MX5 underneath. Trouble is the car in standard trim like mine will see off most cars on the road unless they are exotic and well driven. Plus anything but a rotary or very light V6 would upset the beautiful steering and handling.

Indy - We've got a 67 MGB GT for sale, 1800. Delicious car. http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used-cars/mg/auction-441699193.htm

The MX5 is a great car, over 750,000 sold (the biggest selling 'sports' car). Responsible for cars such as the Z3, Z4, CLK230 and the Boxter to name a few. We just sold a fantastic '06 RS 6 speed. HKS suspension, quality strut bracing and chassis bracing, sports exhaust and a beautifully formed carbon airbox, finished off with two top end Recaro seats. Sounded superb and handled sublimely. Granted the MkI's were the best, but Mazda haven't lost the plot and still produce a superb car.

Why would someone sell that minter? I do prefer the convertibles but that is a very nice example! The 5-bearing B motors were a great performer if done right and could put out impressive HP and revs, just ask my Bro-in-law!

It wasn't until we'd bought ours that we learned it was considered the best model and while the newer ones have more refinement and go just as well or better, ours is perfect for its role and price and I wouldn't want a new one.

Partly that but the B wasn't really a good sports car and was built down to a cost which meant it was less than it could or should have been. The Midget/Sprite's were better at what they were intended to be, were instantly popular and remained so ever since. The main reason the B is mow a classic is sheer age and nostalgia for cars of that era.

Because they were a basic low fun cost sports car. There are heaps of performance parts available. They had considerable track success and were a great car for private independent drivers. They also usually came with Cooper S motors which is a great wee motor for a sports car. Mine with a moderately worked 1275 will just do 102 mph on the front straight of Rupuna, which is flying for a 45 year old car.

Don't get me wrong B's and GT's are also great cars.

Friend over here who used to work for Pro Drive in the UK who is involved in a project here in Christchurch tells me it is also supercharged, running the popular Lexus 4.0 V8. On the sunny weekend days the plymouth gets taken out over the bike cause my parner prefers the plymouth over pillion on the cbr. Altho she is starting to warm to the idea of getting her own bike so we can ride

Went to Arrowtown for lunch today in the Lotus, chased a few bikes over the crown range, they got away at one stage, my excuse was I got held up by a wee convoy of FCV's, caught them up in Wanaka.

Only saw one cop and the radar detector did not go off all day.

FCV's? Might take the MX5 today to town. Some nice weather up here lately. I reckon the SI has some of the best roads in the country and I do envy you having one of he best sports cars to enjoy them with!

Nice! I guess I'm old school but I don't like the wheels. Prefer more in period. I do love the old Yank Tanks though and my dream garage would have 3 or 4 in it. A mate of mine is bringing a 66 Thunderbird in. Looks mint. They're going over to pick it up and cruise around before shipping it back. He's got good contacts in the US.

Yep, i hear what you are sayin about the wheels, they kinda polarize people a bit, some like the chrome style, others would like it a bit more traditional. I threw my mates 15inch widend steelie rims on it a while ago for a laugh, and it looked real cool, so some steelies with micky thompsons on the back are on the "one day" list. I still have the 14inch skinny steelies and pie dish hubcaps that it came with (i just cant bring myself to throw away original parts!!) even tho they wont fit over the disk brakes on the front.

This week is all about motorcycles for me tho, attending my first ever track day at taupo on saterday :msn-wink:

After driving my flatmates MX5 just now, I figure I would be depriving you of great wisdom if I did not share my opinion :msn-wink:

First thoughts were, this is like a fucking submarine, all I got is some tiny portholes to look through. Second thoughts were, holy shit, it even leaks, more submarine authenticity.

Not being my car I didn't do any skids, and being a girls car (and raining) the top was left up. However, the seat was comfy, and it was a lot more nimble than a submarine, though the acceleration is probably pretty similar.

I would prefer my old ST162 celica, and would expect an ST165 (one of the few cars on my DO-WANT list) to be vastly superior to this mazda rubbish :bleh:

As for comparing it to a bike, certainly not for me as a sportsbike rider, maybe its a more apt comparison for <s>tractors</s> cruisers :shifty:
