Ok guys, so I am in the process of trying to swing my own TV show, Mediaworks (TV3 etc..) like the idea and I just need to find a producer at the moment so when I am on the Taupo ride next weekend I will be recording a mock show to send off.

The idea is Bluff to Cape and going through all of the epic roads New Zealand has while at the same time looking at the culture, attractions, eateries, and scenery on the way up/down. That is the basic idea of it, and I know it has been done before, I think it was a little while back though and it was done on a Hardly so I would assume it is all State Highway.

Anyhow, would you guys watch the show if it catered to a wide range of audiences? I would also be doing small cooking shows using the local foods to make easy, delicious dishes just to add a little spice to the show.

So, ideas? Constructive criticism? Just want to flame me? :shifty:

Once I have made the mock up I will add it to KB so you can get a vauge idea of what I want to bring to the table.

Go for gold.

Bloody good idea Matt, would be a definite watch for anyone I know who rides - be good to cover the full spectrum of Riders rather than the stereotype out there, - go for it!

That was quick haha. Thanks mate, there is a lot of things that I want to incorporate into the show as well so it would definitely not be boring. Would also like to get groups of people out joining me and leading me through their stomping ground.

I think the cook off is a bloody good idea,
also as a Fat Biker, how about a little clip/section for local pie gourmet makers? Example Wellywood we have an indian restaurant chain that do 'curry pies' butter chicken, lamb rogan josh, lamb vindaloo etc.
Even maybe in some areas a short organised ride to show one of the local 'good rides' so we can build up a data base of them? Example the Pahiatua track in the Manawatu.

Oooh New Zealand Pie Run - NZPR haha. Those pies sound awesome, what I want is a butter chicken pie with rice in it! Anybody seen those?

Also, yea that is what I would look at doing, spending time in major cities and the small towns/villages looking at the area etc... especially the roads!

"So Hayden, what have we got to cook with today?"

(Hayden passes can of baked beans, a loaf of bread and butter)

All this massaging of te basic idea has prompted me to finalise the format...

Al Brown, on a motorbike, tours the backblocks, and makes pies.

Yea that would all be in there, will also be comparing the prices of places around the area and where to eat. Would also like to have a blast on all the tracks in the country! :innocent:

Sounds like a great show. Better than 99% of the drivel on TV.

Question is, will you be doing this on the GSX250 or the ZZR250... hang about - this is all an elaborate plan to get you a new bike isn't it?!

Haha you figured me out :innocent: The ZZR is in pieces and doesn't really go anymore, and the GSX will be going in 4 months when I get my Full. So we shall see what happens. Thanks mate, yea I don't bother watching TV for that reason, KB is far more interesting.

Yea but not as cooking focused. It will only be a small part of the show.

So, instead of two fat bikers, one skinny one? lol. Marvellous idea. Get off the beaten track to give it more promotional appeal overseas perhaps for adventure riders, judging by the number of GS's being sold it could be a shrewd angle for funding.

Haha I actually want to call it "Off the beaten track" and take on some gravel roads and completely off road. Yea the skinny chef cooking food, no body will trust me enough to eat it.

The idea of a motorcycle tour of all the out of the way places, spot-lighting those bits of NZ riders of all stripes love, is a master-stroke, but has limited appeal to the mass market.
Admit it...the cooking idea is pants. Motorcyclists don't cook, they eat. It's just in there as a hook to catch all those non-motorcyclists that love cooking shows...

Adventure bikes are the biggest sellers in yerp, GS's & Katooms. Last time I was over their touring you literally could not get moved for the beemas... at the side of the road trying to fix their lectrics:facepalm:
The riders have a lot of money, empty nesters with a sense of adventure. This country is paradise for them. It's worth a shot if it could be marketed to Germany, UK etc. Get Tourism NZ on board too.

If you mean mass market as non bikers then we got get some hobbits & scenery in there. Midgets on PW 80's? Now that's mass market.

Yea that is why the cooking idea is in there, trying to appeal to a larger audience.

Yea I would like to bridge out to overseas as I realize that they love NZ roads, scenery etc... and would be very interested in the show. Hmm midgets on PW80's haha that could make a funny clip.

You missed my point. Yep, such a tour show would be watched by bikers. But Joe Public, who can't be bothered with bikes, wouldn't watch such a show. TV is all about ratings...to an extent. For some odd reason people like cooking shows. The ratings are why there are so many of them. Ratings determine advertising rates. And THAT is what TV is all about.
Air something with limited appeal and you guarantee a flop with a short run.

I got it, eventually, took my blinkers off. Yep, scenery, hobbits & entertainment for the masses with bikes for spice & excitement.

Probably wouldn't watch it. If it is primarily about bikes then there will be lots of cheesy shots of a bike in front of some great scenery, possibly with a setting sun through the spokes. If it is not primarily about bikes and meant to appeal to a wider audience then there will be lots of cheesy shots of moving scenery from the bike.

I've seen all the scenery in a variety of other programmes so would only watch it if the host was of interest to me. And to be honest in NZ I can count them on the fingers of one hand and have spare. And I'd get pretty bored of someone banging on about how to pack a pannier.

If you think about it the Hairy Bikers had the right recipe, if you'll pardon the pun. It's a cooking show, so attracts the foodies. It has a bit of biking in it so the foodies see it, involving the people they like and they begin to form an opinion of riders when they possibly had no opinion before. And then their overseas trips were a combination of foreign food, travel and bikes so reached a wider audience. And were fucking funny at times.

I would doubt anyone watches it purely for bikes because they are old lardarses who happen to ride them. A bit like the Two Fat Ladies. But both programmes had a good combination of presenters meaning the topic was less important, it was the interaction between them. Get that, and you are in with a chance. Make it like that Best Biking Roads that was on a few months ago and I doubt it would get a very wide audience beyond the riding community, even if you put a three minute cooking slot with a naked Peta Mathias in it.

I find Alton Browns Feasting on Asphalt (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feasting_on_Asphalt) better than the Hairy Bikers
You can see some of it here http://www.ovguide.com/tv/feasting_on_asphalt.htm

Recently I saw another similar program that wasn't bad either which had a woman on a Triumph in Fance at D Day celebrations but I can't remember what it's called

I wouldn't want this show to be as centred on cooking as those shows are, maybe toss in a bit of NZ history/places along the lines of what Marcus Lush did in North and South(not neccesary bike related)

I definitely wouldn't want it so cooking based, enough so that the foodies get their fix and then the rest would be something interesting. (I actually hate cooking shows, can never watch a full episode. I don't understand the fascination with them.) I would be looking at the history of places I go and having a good look at the town and I would be looking at what cool things there are to do where I am at. So whatever attractions are there, I would be checking them out and reviewing them.

Could also try and think of some stupid and funny things that I could do with the bike or create set-up scenes that would interest viewers.
Will have to do a fair amount of brainstorming for sure.
