I lived next to a Highway 61 gang house in the 80's and they were no worries at all, nice guys n girls....then i hired one to work for a me a few years ago, said he had left the gang ......i said ok subject to a police check.....so he worked for me and was ok......until the trailer was "lost".....then about a week later his police record arrived........it was about 4 pages long...including serious prison time.........I fired him, about a week later a garage in thames called and asked if i wanted my "gear back".....???......apparently my employee had used the company van but becuase i didn't give him a petrol card he instead gave away the equipment in the van to cover the cost of the petrol!!!......turns out he was on P......and he hadn't left the gang......apparently you don't ever leave.

Well, I did mention roughly the sample size. I think if you are going to cite poll results it's only fair to mention it.

And yes, the assumption would be roughly 200 people ranging from 50cc scooter enthusiast, Harley Owner Group members, garage chopper builders, 1% club members, track racers, and people who are "bike-curious". My second gravel ride... riding along on "normal" gravel road, coming downhill, corners blah blah, round the corner and there was very thick gravel where they were doing roadworks (dumping huge amounts of large rocks). Everyone had slowed up alot, I must have braked. I think I went into "retard" mode, the BMW brakes are really sensitive. The front wheel shot out from under me. The guys rode my bike to get it going again and they said my tyres were completely wrong and very slippery - they were dual purpose tyres, so shit on road as well as gravel. They have knobblies on the front and road on the back of their bikes.
Bike was on my ankle... finished the ride to Puhoi had lunch and then rode home, trying to ignore the bent handlebars, brake pedal, brake lever, and screaming ankle encased in boot. Got x-rayed, not broken though everyone thought it was... bike is damaged but insured.

I don't think knobs are necessary or even helpful in gravel. That is a theoretical opinion based on road tyres working fine and me not seeing how knobs would improve matters. Maybe an adventure rider type can correct me.

I blame my lack of skill and experience. I had been okay with allowing the bike to move as much as it needed on the loose stuff. I had obviously been kidding myself that I was riding the bike, instead I was a passenger and the bike was in charge. I got nervous and froze, I then slowed down too much got too much of a "wobble on" and braked cos my brain froze.

The guys that I was with are fantastic riders, very experienced and skilled and they thought I had the wrong tyres and that the knobblies would have made it easier.

It doesn't matter now.... I prefer the Harley on the sealed roads as the BMW wallows a bit in the corners and the tyres aren't as sticky as the Harley's. I won't do gravel riding again, to be honest, I am much happier on the Harley. Plus I have to sell it now, as I am not working and we need to get to Australia for a family emergency.

Well, property management isn't what I call glam, get more abuse than you could possibly imagine, its a boring job but pays the bills...being on stage entertainning in the music industry, it's glam!
