Well I striped most of the engine today. Looks like the piston gave up. Or it could have been the pin. Anyway I now have the old engine in and ready to go racing. Also thanks to Boyle Kawasaki I have a new bottom end to build a new engine with. Crank is salvageable valves are bent. Barrel will need a re sleeve. It will be back better and faster than ever for the GP.

Isn't there some rule about that sort of thing with "real" race bikes? It probably wouldn't hurt to encourage 4-stroke riders to put something in place. We could start with FXR riders. It may also be advantagious to have some sort of scatter shield or blanket like on drag race transmissions. Could be a use for old bullet-proof vests. I'd personally prefer to see something in 1/4" plate surrounding the bottom end and possibly filled with concrete.

Interesting checking out the cams in the background of the photos. Ramps have been steepened and max lift increased but not too excessive looking at them. Any chance of seeing a plot of lift versus crank position for stock and "race" cams? I know that's probably confidential, fair enough.

The ramps aren't nearly as aggressive as I expected, clearly my cams are far to wild on the exhaust.
Whats really suprising in the photos is the standard old dished piston (at least whats left of one), expected to see a nice high compression number in there.
Rich could you turn the cylinder so we could have a shot of the intake port? And over so we can see the combustion chamber. Cheers.

1 x BOB 1 x GP about 5 wellington rounds and half a north island round. Left unmolested I am sure it would last as long as the other one I have. That one has lasted about 2 years of racing. Valve pockets were to deep maybe. It also could have been the lightened pin. We will never know. The piston was an akunar but it was the 15mm pin X version not the super cheap 16mm standard ones. Anyway onwards and upwards. Lets not dwell on the past.
