I thought may be a good idea to see if the old hospital in Hoki will let people bunk down there in the disused hospital? I know its a camp ground during the wild food fest.................Maybe the camp would do us a deal and open up one old hospital room for us for the night.

To me thats the main put off of the event, the cost/lack of accommodation in Hoki. Failing that, there are 2 of us that are thinking about doing this event and just riding back that night

The idea of using the same domain as the Wild Foods Festival with a marquee and campsite, etc. was investigated by the organizers for this year's event but didn't eventuate for a number of reasons. However, this remains an option for future events.

There is plenty of affordable accommodation in Hoki. See the Scooter Safari website (http://www.scootersafari.co.nz/accommodation.html) for a list of places offering discounts for participants and supporters.

Just seen this thread on KB. A little different to my normal adventure riding jaunts but I'm looking forward to it. I knew there was a reason I bought a scooter after the Feb 22nd quake. It wasn't because it was an easy way to get between offices but so I could enter the safari :)

Starting to wring dosh out of my colleagues. Need to start hitting up corporations that I work with.

Anyone from Auckland entering the scooter Safari. I have put my name down but not sure how to get my scooter down to Christchurch. Any ideas???? Not going to ride it down, so that option is out.

Getting close now! And the fundraising (http://www.fundraiseonline.co.nz/fundraise/topathletes.aspx?e=912) has reached a totally unexpected and incredible $170,000+ Things are really ramping up now.

The Safari will be departing Air New Zealand No.1 Hangar on Orchard Rd., Harewood at 0800 this Saturday. From there the group will head out onto McLeans Island Road and to Kirwee for the first planned stop. Find a spot along the route and cheer the group on! Here's one immaculately prepared example of the array of machines that you will see:

Another Safari done and dusted with over $225,000 raised to boot! What an incredible achievement by everybody.

http://a2.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/562622_183627255096317_808952758_n.jpg

The weather played a crucial role this year but most handled it very well. There was a small "rogue" element that decided to join the ride and who were not welcome. The unexpected extra numbers of scooters taking part created a few extra issues for the event crews to deal with. Tighter controls on the numbers participating will be put in place for future Safaris. But overall things ran smoothly.

For those who decided to ride back over the mountains on Sunday there was more of the same weather only worse. Just as well it was a tailwind!

Top marks to everybody for an incredible event. Keep an eye on the Safari pages for photos and comments, etc.
