View Full Version : Timaru - Oamaru: March Hare Rally
big block
12th February 2012, 20:42
Hi guys, been a keen reader for a few years and only just joined, I have searched and can see no real info/threads on here about next months March Hare. I travelled from Brisbane in 2009 for it and loved it apart from the rain on way back to Dunedin- so have booked and paid again this year (purposely coincides with a work trip). I have family in Dunedin that I will be riding with but have a couple of questions:
* What is the best day trip to do on the Saturday (Tekapo is without a doubt my fav place)?
* Who from here is going?
* What is the long range forecast going to be like? - I first moved to Australia in 1989 so am not really accustomed to the cold weather.
Thanks in advance
BB

The forecast, um weather...
http://metservice.com/rural/canterbury-plains Try that link it is as good as any.
Day trip, Tekapo is good and you could make it circuit taking in the Benmore dam and Fairlie.
Who is going is a secret, cant tell you would have to kill you etc, nah you will work it out if not have a good time anyhow.

Could lend you a tent, a couple of camp stretchers and a couple of sleeping bags, if cruza doesn't mind sticking them in his wagon for a ride down....
Plan on being there for saturday night, although nothing is definate when you live in the shaky city....

Am working on wife.I made mistake of telling her most rallies were quite mild and only the March Hare had much in the way of wet tee and more.I shoulda kept mouth shut I told her this years ago but she has good memory. If I convince her I may grab a 2 man tent and bring it along. My 6 man tent I use with trailer is 11kg.Little 2 man one would be worth bringing if i can find one cheap.

Update wifey now keen and we will buy a 4 man 3.9kg tent and bring our sleeping bag and get 2 lightweight role mats.Carry the gear all way round the trip and camp a couple of times during the 2 weeks. This will give us lighter gear for the future bike trips and larger gear to use when we take our van.Its going to be a fat trailer load lol but this will save about 15kg weight on our current camping gear.
Not only will she camp a March hare ill have lighter gear for bike trips and she is under the impression that its a long term solution to going camping with her sister and sisters children. If i was any more cunning idd grow a tail and you could call me a weasel.

At the moment the only time I have for leaving is 9am, now that could be a bit early
But around 10am from the Yauldhurst tavern car park would be a starting point , leaving at 10.30.
I think your little 400 would just pootle along nicely with my little 250, all the biger guys may get board slowing down for us Jen.
So if there are any others want to take a slow route down, Take the inland route, Methvin, Mount Somers, Geraldine, Fairly, Cave, Waimatie,
Sumthing like that eh ?
Or is the 1pm meeting time what you looking at Jen, with Monty and co?

Because the popo's are being harassed by the govt to harass bikers,
And with no license on the XS, or the wrong class,
I run the risk of walking and having to wait 28days to collect whats left of her from the impound yard.
So the lesser of the two evils is to comply, and have fun at the same time....
Yeah the inland route as you said, with or with out company Thats where I will be going

I"m all sorted to leave on Friday, meeting in hornby with the others not that i know where they are meeting lol Be nice if someone posted the meeting point, I"m not sure of the way and don't wanna be on my own either, but still wanna pootle and enjoy cruisin  I may be a pain too as if the weather is good want to stop for photos of the scenery :2thumbsup
Thats fine if you wana come with us, we are meeting at my place 45 amyes rd hornby. 1pm ish, aim to be gone by 130pm. My brother has just bought a brand new GN125 so the pace will not be fast, might even give him a 10min headstart..... and we may have to stop and wait for him in ashburton, then timaru as his max cruise speed is about 90kmh :brick: to prevent blowing the wee beast up. We are just taking state highway 1 strait down there

Hey monty, enjoy overtaking all the dardly devistaings on the "Straight " road,
and about 12.30 while you are all loading up, listen for the thunder as we leave from you neighbors drive to do the inland route.
Make sure you have the kettle boiling at the camp site for when we arrive after you..

Well today would be a great day to be riding south, pity I have to work for a living.
Heading down tomorrow sometime, weather looks a bit iffy early so will have to see how it turns out, forecast looks not to bad for the proceedings later though. At least if it's raining on the way down it'll save me having to wash the bike.
Anyone else heading down tomorrow?

Well that was fun.
Nice ride down on sat arvo after waiting for the weather to pass over, a bit cold in waimate but no rain of any consequence.
A good night on saturday night, the band didn't really get the crowd going but the company was good, and the bonfire was warm.
Cruisy ride back today with cruza, jen and subike, now time to sort the gear out and an early night I think.

Thanks to the others I shared with, great time peoples.
Good company and good laughter,
My little plastic fantastic scooter handled the distance quite well,
But not at any speed above 110kph, as expected really.

sorry to say it Monty, but you need to learn how to do a burn out.
The Harley won because he did a burn out,
not thrash the fuck out of a poor bike.

Had a laugh Friday afternoon ,leaning on the fence talking to Subike i see a couple of mates turn up on TLs,they park up in an empty space with the closest group being a huge tent inhabited by hardcore Harley guys,i set off to say gidday and as i do 1 hardcore Harley guy manages to propel himself and :eek5:his huge fucking gut outta the huge tent and proceed to tell my mates to move as wants the space left for more of similar heritage:yawn:arrogant fat fuck so i turn up and say to my mate "dont park those 2 TLs next to these heaps of shit put your tents up over there" which they did.Arrogant fat fuck gave me the death stare and dragged his knuckles back to the tree,:tugger:

I didnt see you up there doing a burnout mate??
The harley did a mean burnout, i just thought Ben on the buell did a better job. I never said the sv should have won?.... And I didnt take the SV up there to prove a point, it was one of my stag do challenges to blow a tyre, I just put it in 6th and didnt take the revs past 8-9000 rpm (redline is 11) and about half throttle, as to NOT "thrash the fuck out of it".... To the harley riders that would sound like thrashing it tho. :killingme

And one day a chain will break and cut the twit in half standing behind the bike

Fair enough call Dan from your side of the wall
But there is a skill in doing a decent burnout, although what it is you obvious don't know.
yup, some do "thrash the shit" out their bikes trying to do one,
yup, drink quite often is involved in the lead-up to doing one
yup, damage to the rear of the bike can occur when tires let go and the belts start to fly
Nope engines don't get damaged if done properly,
Nope chains don't break, under less stress than on a race track.
Body damage does occur, but not as much as a road racer dropping it, pulling the same revs, after 5 bourbons or 7 jugs and thinks he is a rossie .
At least after a burnout, an acc form does not need to be forwarded if it all goes wrong.

Nope chains don't break, under less stress than on a race track.na man, seen em do it many a time, including on the track (nearly wore one in the sweed from a CB1100F once, just crusing at a hundie we were)
At least after a burnout, an acc form does not need to be forwarded if it all goes wrong.Like I said a chain or belt can let go and what about the flying HOT balls of melted rubber and steel belt fragments? huh huh well Mr ;) been hit my self at rallys from hot rubber (DUH I blame the booze for getting me up there) :weep:

Yep yep correct but still worth a photo lol.Not my bike wouldnt do it myself.
And yes all the bikes lost wiring from brake lights tail lights and paint heat damage and numberplates melted.
I didnt try standing behind the bikes as burning rubber doesnt do it for me.
