You know when you're talking to somebody IRL (a few might have to wrack their memories for such an occasion) and you disagree, then just go oh yeh, and carry on with the conversation, or start taking the piss if the opportunity arises, or maybe even start a factual reasoned discussion; I mean it's vary rare we get punched in the face for talking. How come every time on the internet it turns into some dick measuring contest (or the female equivalent, gash measuring?).

Is it that anonymity turns people into assholes? Or is it just misinterpretations getting out of hand?

On those rare occasions when you did get punched or someone had to step in to prevent the punch being thrown, those are the arseholes on the internet. In life you just avoided saying stuff in their company, if you couldn't avoid their company that is, now they just see a thread and jump in and no-one can stop them pressing the enter key.
Also a piss take that might come with a smirk in real life or a note of sarcasm in the voice is just text, if lucky it comes with a emotocon but that too can be misunderstood. :rolleyes:
