Hi there,

I'm new to the motor bike world as i have recently purchased a 1968 Honda CD175. Stunning bike in brilliant condition for its age. It was purchased with no papers (WoF, VIN license, registration) whatsoever.

At the moment it's with Linton and Norm down at D.A.S. who are giving it the basic once over, inspecting it's condition and repairing/"tinkering" with some faulty parts (tuning the carburetor, electrical).

My main worry is getting the bike re-vinned. I'm not 100% sure what re-vinning is, how much it costs, best/friendliest place to get it done in Christchurch and sneaky things to look out for.

The carburetor was well out of tune, loose fuel tap, horn wasn't working, "rev-bogging" at approx. 80km, indicators weren't working and it needed a fuel filter and a new fuel hose.

If you could help me out by linking me to some really tops fellas in Christchurch who can me give a painless re-vinning, that'd be much appreciated.

Just reading your post, it will be far from painless. Is it likely to get a WOF in its current form? If not, don't bother wasting your time attempting to get it recomplied to go on the road. You have twenty working days from the date of inspection to get it legal, or you pay your inspection fee again. I work in Wellington, and its $149 for the inspection. Registration IF it passes is then extra, $273.86 for six months.

Was it previously registered? If so, you need proof of previous registration, so something from the last owner to say it was registered or even the plate and some rego tags.

You need proof of ownership, which can be in the form of a statutory declaration (JP signs it) and some emails from the seller.

If it was previously registered, find out when it was first registered as it might need a brake dec, but given the age, i doubt it very much.

If it was never registered, PM me and I'll get a list of what you need then. Its not as hard as it sounds, its just a pain in the arse getting all the paperwork and fixing stuff if you can't get parts.

Ive been through this process twice with 2 old trail bikes that I have made road legal.

If the bike has never been registed in NZ before then there are 3 main requirements that you need prior to turning up at VTNZ

1, The frame number must be in the "System" , and to check this, dont use your nearest post shop because their data base is not as good as VTNZ so check with them. or you must have proof that the bike was sold in NZ from New.

2, You need to pick up a brake decleration form from VTNZ and take it along with your wheels and brake shoes to a recognised Bike shop and they have to measure and declare that the drum diameters are within manufacturers specs and the shoes are within spec for lining thickness and that they are not made by Hu Flung Dung etc from the likes of china. (I got genuine shoes in both cases and kept the reciepts)

3, You also need to get a Police check form from VTNZ and get the local constabulary to declare that the frame number is not on their hot list.

My bike was a 1981 Kawasaki KL250 which had no record in the system so I contacted Kawasaki head office and they very kindly checked through their old sales records and sent me a letter declaring that it was sold new in NZ.

Then of course it has to meet all current WOF requirements, Make sure that all the castleated nuts have split pins in them cos they check, EVERY light must work including all instrument lights, neutral, high beam etc and must have a rear reflector.

Thats what I went through anyway so good luck.

what is a rough cost to get a bike re-vinned? I see that you only need to pay 6 months rego, I was under the impression you had to pay 12 months worth, 6 months is much more affordable.. does the bike have to go through the Low Volume Cert process to be reregistered?
