i can do stuff like changing oil but when it comes to whats involved with valve clearance, it was beyond me. So i got service prices from 2 stores in hamilton and both came back with around $400 excluding parts for a full service.

in the service manual it states for the bike it needs to be checked every 4,000km. what are others opinion on how frequent this should be? one person said if its not rattling (the tappets I assume he meant) then dont worry about it.

it also states changing oil and filter every 4,000km which is not too much of an expense for me.

Get the manual, it wont be that hard.

Doesn't the manual state that its just a checking of the valve clearances and adjustment if necessary?
$400 sounds a little bit on the expensive side if its not including parts. Last shop bought service I got on my GT250 (same engine as the GV and R) was nearly $1200 including parts, labour and a set of $750 Michelin Pilot Road 2's fitted

thanks all - im not going to bother about it. instead will be doing oil, filter, sparks and inspect front pads 2nite in my humble garage while listening to some wigmore and having leffe. something different compared to playing skyrim and working.

After the initial 10,000 - 12,000 km's have been done I would check it once. Then wouldn't check it again to be honest. Most of the time they dont need adjusting anyway.
$400 is expensive, especially if they dont do anything than verify all is fine.
