I applied for a weeks leave in March, and with that time I intend to go exploring the lower north island. Taking my car, some clothes, and thats it.
Any recommendations for places to go, must visit spots, and places I can shower for free or cheap?
I plan on sleeping in my car, so that could be interesting to say the least! Its not a big car, and I won't have a charger for my phone unless someone wants to loan me one for an iphone.
My sense of direction is shocking... (I got lost going from J'ville to Karori)
I'm excited already!

Find $200 for a return ferry ticket and go exploring the South Island instead.

Maybe sleeping on a bike is too tricky:blink:
GingerMidget
16th February 2012, 20:54
Cos I don't have a bike yet, and I can't sleep on one. Plus I plan on bringing something back with me, and that requires me to have the space to fit it. I wonder how my flatmates going to react to the 200l fish tank I'm planning on liberating from a friends place in Ekata-middleofnowhere-huna?
A current 120l one isn't big enough...

But they've invented places called backpackers, with cheap accommodation?
Ah, no bike, OK then. Depends on what you'd prefer doing in your car, as there are plenty of gravel roads to explore out the back of Forgotten Highway etc. If you want sealed roads, Middle Road, Porangahau, Napier Taihape... east cape... lots of mint roads to travel...

Right, so the plan is this so far.
Buy a map book, or steal one from mum (we all know she doesn't use it)
Take phone charger, drive north and stop when it gets dark. From there, pick the first state highway I can find, and go left.
I'll blog what actually happens, and where I end up. This is quite exciting already. First grown up trip! Or at least first trip I've been able to just pick up and go without having to worry about putting small animals in catteries and stuff like that.
I do plan on finding Gentle Annie and seeing how gentle she really is, which should be entertaining!

Make sure the tide is out if you that means you are going to Kapiti Island.

FFS be careful where you park up at night. Believe it or not there ARE some utter bastards out there...... Camping grounds or back packers are well worth it.

Mana Island might be more accessible  but she should be way way past that after a day's riding.
Are you planning to head north up SH1 or SH2 Gingermidget? As Berries pointed out it could make a difference as to how wet you get turning left on day 2.

I should find out where some backpacker type places are then I guess. Cos I know I'll get yelled at by someone else if I do go through with the sleeping in the car plan. For some reason, hes a bit protective?
Maybe cos I'm a clumsy arse at times...

A tent site ... and sleep in your [locked] car is ... cheaper than a cabin. (usually)

Hrmm good point. When i drive alone at night in strange places I lock my doors, and I never pick up hitch-hikers. Dad yelled at me once about the door locking thing and I've never forgotten that one. Given he almost never yells at me, that particular one stuck with me.
I should figure out where I actually want to go!

Ekata-middleofnowhere-huna?
There's a fair amount of nice scenery there (my parents live there, I lived there for a few years too).
I'd suggest Feilding, you bring the piss and prophylactics.
Or go out to Castle point, then up the back way to Eketahuna, out to Akitio and whatnot.
All depends on what things you like to look at...

There is a camping ground in Castle Point.
Palmy is easy, sleep on a homeless man.
There's a camp ground thing in Feilding too

Hahaha I have a place to stay in P Norf. I could theoretically stay there a couple of days, and then go camp gound hunting from there. Mostly I just don't want to be too far away from creature comforts. Like flushing toilets and showers. Yes I'm a princess, but I'm ok with that :nya:

I had actually thought of that one too. Then decided against it, I'm not that cruel to be flashin my nekkid white ass around and scarin' the wildlife.

Nah, hes a big boy, he can look after himself. Besides, half naked girls are only fun when you know they will only be in that state for a short amount of time. Its like limited time only fruit pies at McD's. You know your gonna regret it in the morning, but at the time its so good. (kinda like the girl who said she was from Auckland, and walked in to my work friday afternoon. Turns out she remembered me and is pissed I didn't call her back)

So, I'm leaving friday. Aiming to stay in Taupo friday night, and decide where to go from there on Saturday. This is going to be interesting. First ever long distance rdrive by myself. Longest I've ever driven was wellington>otaki>palmy>wellington
So now I have a charger for my phone sorted, some blankets, should I decide i want a nap on the side of the road and I'll get hold of a camera somehow. I found mine, but its a bit worse for wear.

Stayed here before: http://blackcurrantbp.com/ not too bad.
Other option is Stag Park Diner. No website (google it and you'll find info on them - they're a 24/7 diner with accommodation), haven't stayed there yet, but apparently good and will probably stay there in a couple of weeks.

I did, but the prosect of playtime fascinated me, and rationality didn't seep under the alcohol blanket.
too many of my whoops moments involve alcohol. Curtains, Girls who say they are from Auckland, Broken feet...
Oooh Taupo sounds like a good plan!

Epic road trip is cancelled. I spent most of my money keeping the cage on the road. Now tomorrow its off to the gym to put my membership on hold for a few weeks. Save some money, and more importantly, see if i can get stuff to stop hurting! constant pain is rather demoralising.

no, but i need to give myself some real time off. its been too much lately, and i'm starting to notice to effects. No time off anything, too much, blah blah blah.
Knowing my luck, i'd buy a bike, and bin it straight away. Thats how tired I am, and constantly sore

I also just spent the last hour being poked, prodded and generally having pain caused, only for them to say well its the chiro who is making it worse. what you really need, is those muscles to recover from some rather nasty abuse at the gym, oh, heres a script for some fun stuff, and you can't go back to the gym for 6 weeks. FFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
but the drugs are good
