They sure have made some weird and wonderful race bikes over the years.

Turning the CX engine around in the frame was a goodin!

I've always liked Honda's efforts to move things forwards and inovative designs in much the same way I like Moto Guzzis efforts back in the classic period to try all sorts of engine configurations.

its better than everybody elses idea of just using it for a mooring.

Certainly all the 4 or 5 hundred was good for.

Nice pipes. Inside thigh would get a bit toasty though, wouldn't it?

Bit hot down the straight...nice fresh air when the leg is out though!

Hundreds of motorcycle courier riders would disagree..... (mind you the alternator idea was a bit silly)

Should've got a GS500 instead.

Yep Honda always try stuff and its race history record is second to none in total. No other manufacturer has won at so many different classes of competition, especially when you add on the car stuff like F1 and Indy.

Honda uses innovative stuff to psych the opposition and does it first - remember "big bang", then "screamer" and more lately "seamless gearbox". A lot of it is just a name, but then if it works.

As for seamless gearbox, have you read this story from early last year? http://motomatters.com/analysis/2011/03/19/honda_s_magic_gearbox_worth_a_few_hundre.html

Basically it puts the Ducati in a different space than the Honda and also Yamaha.

You shouldn't laugh that hard about the CX either they weren't that slow given how old a vintage they are. I've seen a few punted along. They were just a weird design though and why?

I had the mighty GS550 when I was a kid(well...my big brother did, BUT I STOLE IT ALL THE TIME!:shifty:)...note...Do NOT wheel stand!!, they are damn heavy and drift to the left (towards the parked cars!)...and yes...I tried MANY times..same result!:weird:

Yes they were Merv. The Boyle Bros made me use a CX400 Euro for a week as punishment once. Was the slowest week I can remember.

The 500 was slightly 'faster'. But a GS500 would waste one.

You talking the GS500 4 cylinder from 1979 on, or the GS500 twin from 1989 on, or both lol?

CX dates from 1978 so not a young design, and as I said a weird one at that.

Don't think as successful as the RS750 though.

Honda's problem is that they make bikes for you to ride rather than bikes you "want" to ride!

Blue Wing Honda exacerbate the issue by only importing the bikes that "they" want to sell rather than the bikes that "you" (the customer) want to own and ride!

Otherwise Honda are the best built most reliable bikes in the world! IMHO!

Nope. The CX turned around in the frame was a very different beast. It was the NS750.

The RS750 was a far more competitive beast right from the get go.

Crasher's been waiting for me - here is the first attempt with the CX flattracker. I guess they proved it could work and then got serious - turned it around in more ways than one.

On the RS750 - Word from the team was that they spotted the XLV750 in a walk around the Honda factory, and thought ''Hey, we could use that!'', and claim not to know how it came about. But I'm still suspicious about the un Honda 45 degree, aircooled dry sumped engine with identical bore and stroke to the XR750. Just too convenient to find in a corner.

Not a 650 Bros, cause that's hardly fair. Mind you...they're not a powerhouse either.

Mine went well. :innocent: not the most factory spec example though.
One problem it had was a loose nut between the seat and bars.

I do think the BrosS650 spanks the GS.

The 650 had a terrible set up front end though :weep:
Having ridden both, the Honda is nicer. But only due to being the size of a ciggy lighter and with more torque. I doubt there's a huge difference up top between two standard ones, but hey, who cares, they're a bit slow anyway.

The 600 was the NTV Revere, Bros was 400/647. The Revere had shaft drive and more weight and was somewhat boring...

I think the factory 18in rear looks hot on them (later model ones had 'em) and they need the factory low clip-ons and close ratio box.

I'm biased, 'cause mine had that stuff
