Learner Licence and autos?

I picked up a 25 year old Yamaha 200 Skootah last weekend and my son would like to ride it.....The LTSA site says at over 50cc you need a motorcycle licence but you can't do a test on an auto....

Then simply go to a place which does the basic handling test while letting you borrow one of their bikes?

I assume you're talking about the basic handling test...

Huh? Since when?
hXc did all his riding on 'standard' motorcycles, but did and passed his 6F test on a Suzuki AN125. The only comment made at the time was "Don't think you can go jumping on a Hyabusa" Too late...he'd already ridden one of those

Basic handling skill test first, the instructor will generally supply the bike, then theory test, pass these and you have a learners licence, job done.

A friend did her basic handlers last March (2011)and was told that very soon you wouldn't be able to sit the test on a scooter - June 2011 was mentioned as a possible date...

Bro-in-law sat his 6r about 2 weeks ago on one of them 125cc Suzuki Scooter things. CVT gearbox and all. No questions. Wifey and I sat our basic handling on the same bike. Oh wait, that was a couple years back. But yeah, no questions about the 6R unless they changed it with these new laws that come in this month (or next, whenever it is).

I wouldn't believe anything you find on an LTSA site - they haven't existed since 2004 when it became LTNZ....which in 2008 became NZTA, Waka Kotahi. Riding old bikes must send the brain back in time too.

Basic riding skills have to be done on a normal bike with gears (they supply). However I did my restricted and full on a Honda Dylan 150cc scooter no issues. It is cages if you do on an auto then you are only allowed to drive autos.

I did mine on a CT110. Not really a "normal" bike in the sense that it had an auto clutch and there was no need to go out of 1st gear for the test.

ask someone at a motorbike training place - they can give you the correct info - I heard this from a guy that worked with QuickChick (spelling probably wrong) - she is on KB and trains riders
